This past Monday offered a humid, intermittently rainy afternoon in Coolidge Corner. My friend and…read moreI wandered the Arcade--avoiding the rain and killing some time before transporting me and my stuff to Logan Airport for my evening flight home to Los Angeles. Tucked in the back corner of the Arcade, I came upon Arcade Optical. I dropped in to inquire if there might be anything they could do to repair my recently broken eyeglasses. Long story short: camping in Narragansett; wrestling with my 4 year-old great nephew; snapped the hinge connector of the left temple*, separating it from the frame. Joanie of Arcade Optical evaluated the situation and determined that the best option was to attach a compatible temple* with a matching two-pronged male hinge piece. She went to work finding a suitable temple amongst an ample collection. A few minutes into her search, Joanie found a candidate. She went to work attaching it, reshaping the temple to fit my large head, and cleaning the neglected lenses. (Glass Plus and Scott Toilet Tissue are her recommended supplies). It was quick work done expertly. I was more than impressed. When I asked how much, Joanie brushed away the question. I was surprised and grateful. I can't say if Joanie will provide excellent service, free of charge, for the next victim of great-nephew wrestling. But I can highly recommend the excellent, expert service of Arcade Optical. *Temple is the anatomically correct term for the sides that include the "temple tip" that rests on your ear. Who knew? I'll bet Joanie knew.

Dr. Kalish is excellent; caring, knowledgeable and very approachable!…read more I appreciate how he incorporates his holistic medical knowledge in his eye exam including lifestyle changes, nutrition and healthy sleep habits as they apply to eye health. He constantly seems to be learning and staying up to date on current evidence that he applies to his practice. Dr. Kalish is very attentive and responsive - it's clear he cares about his patients and is truly passionate about his practice. In a world where healthcare practitioners are usually irritable and rushed, Dr. Kalish is quite the opposite; his efforts are educational, personalized and enjoyable!

I had an absolutely awful experience at Brookline Vision House with Dr. Kalish, who is nothing more…read morethan a scam artist running a shady operation. The red flags started immediately when he refused to let me wash my hands in the sink, insisting instead that I use hand sanitizer--because apparently, basic hygiene is too much to ask for in his office. Then came the outright fraud. He tried to upsell me on bogus services, including claiming he could check the "thickness" of my cornea using a standard microscope--something that is not remotely how corneal thickness is measured. Either he thinks his patients are too ignorant to know better, or he just doesn't care. To top it all off, it turns out this guy has been setting up new Yelp pages to bury the flood of terrible reviews he's rightfully earned. That kind of shady, deceptive practice should tell you everything you need to know. Avoid this place at all costs.

This is my second visit here for a regular contact lens exam. Dr Usana Wu is very thorough,…read moreappointments are conveniently scheduled, and the pricing is honest. It's a small office right on Beacon street - there's a street lot right across so driving was convenient both visits. Why I keep coming back: 1. Thorough - the contact lens exam is extensive and she gives helpful advice on how to increase comfort while reading or working on the computer. I have dry eyes and she recommended a soft lens that improved my comfort. I also like that she explains things in detail as she is doing the exam. Found out my prescription was outdated and she fixed that. 2. Convenience - she books appointments on weekends or evenings which is great. My last appointment was at 8pm on a Monday though Saturday was also an option. I also went late on a Friday for an earlier appointment. Also, it's in Coolidge corner so plenty of parking and easy to get to. 3.Honest - this was the cheapest exam I could find in Brookline and it was not short - she took her time examining me and making sure I understand what I need. She doesn't sell lenses, so I am confident she recommends the right thing for me.

I was really misled by all the very positive reviews of this optometrist…read more She is cheap. She may be minimally competent. But she did not assess my needs. She prescribed a very old lens that could not correct my astigmatism. She said that that was an acceptable cost of wearing contact lenses. She told me that toric lenses, that could correct my astigmatism, would be too expensive and would tear easily. She did not even mention rigid gas permeable lenses. This led to a prescription for a lens that was ill-suited to my needs. It didn't correct my vision very well. The technology is just much more advanced. I think she assumed that cost was my absolute, primary objective. While cost is something that is a consideration for me, I also want a lens that I can see with! And so, when I went to Korb & Associates, I felt that there were many more options explained, and much more thorough examination was performed. I cannot recommend this service. Go elsewhere.

I do…read moreshop around and sometimes use other shops for some of my frame purchases, but when it comes to trusted advice about the health of my eyes, or anything having to do with my contact lenses, Dr. Kalish's professional sensibilities and strong customer focus have kept me coming back again and again. Twice he has bailed me out by helping to facilitate emergency supplies or prescriptions while I was traveling. One time, it was in helping to secure medication for a severe eye problem while I was in California. He has even arranged for hand delivery of samples when I was running low on lenses. I've moved up to the North Shore in the last 7 years, but continue to travel to Brookline because the service and care are worth it to me. I'm a visual designer, and the Lenscrafter model of banging things out doesn't work. If you're looking for a place that will pay attention to you, and put your needs first, give them a chance.

While it may seem like ages ago, I still remember the kindness and friendliness Manny and Paddy gave me which is something I rarely see these days from businesses. Coming here, I knew that BVH would charge higher for their frames and services but I couldn't settle on the kind of frames Lens Crafter had. None of them really flattered my face. You know when you're looking for frames, it's already weird seeing yourself in a new pair and at the same time you feel lost at the overwhelming selection. There were a couple from Lenscrafters that were okay, but do I really need them to be from Tiffanys or Burberry? No. So I went a couple stores down to give BVH a try and see what frames they offered. Manny was very attentive and helpful. The fact that I had a particular style of frame I liked helped loads in making the choosing process easier. The annoying thing is all their frames are in a glass case so you can't access them yourself. Manny promptly chose 3-4 based on my preferences and I tried them on. The one thing that was outstanding about Manny was he critiqued how you looked with each frame-you don't have the generic, sugar coated "oh you look great." He commented how I have a wide facial structure and recommended that rectangular frames would better complement my face. I've never gained such insight before and I totally agree with him after trying a couple of rectangular and circular ones. Pretty amazing how after more than a decade of wearing glasses and going to countless lens stores from different countries, it took Manny to give such useful advice. Paddy, the optometrist, was a joy to work with. I never felt nervous around him as he had this aura of cheerfulness that made it comforting during the eye exam. We managed to talk about myopia and he asked about my studies in college and why I chose my major. Effortless conversation. At the end of the eye exam, he said he'd be more than willing to have me as an intern or shadow there if I ever wanted to in the future! Manny gave me a couple of free pens on my 2 visits there. He made it a point for me to take them. I still have them sitting in my cup of pens to this day :) When I came to pick up the glasses, he made sure it fitted right. It was slightly unbalanced so he used a special machine to heat and curve the rims so it hooked well in a balanced fashion to my ears. I've never had that done before even though this was not my first time wearing plastic frames. I think it's pretty amazing how these 2 can run a optical lens store by themselves when Lens Crafters has a big team, but falls short on customer service. While BVH does have a retro look to it, don't let it deter you because they're just as capable in running a business compared to corporate chains. The only real short fall is the price which is really not budget friendly. Came to around $400 with the eye exam. My school insurance is lame and doesn't cover lens wear. Had I had more 'dough', I would rank BVH 5 stars without hesitation.
