For 16 mm film transfers - go somewhere else If you watch "why Legacy Digital is different" you will be disappointed. If you hope for a turnaround sooner than 8 weeks (even for a small order) you will be disappointed. If you expect an avi file output that runs on Windows 10 media player you will be disappointed. If you expect them to get all the films sequentially and without repeating segments you will be disappointed. If you expect your transferred films to video to be smooth and not jump all over the place you will be disappointed. There's more but basically expect to be disappointed or you will be. I had 5 reels with a good deal of water damage so I did not expect perfection. But for my 80 bucks I was hoping for at least a few minutes of decent video on the not so damaged parts. I think after 2 months they spent about 20 to 30 minutes to complete it. Three inch diameter film reels, at normal 17 frames per second rate can run about 4 or 5 minutes. Because the converted frame rate was about 29 frames per second (double time) I got roughly 1 minute video from each of the reels - fast motion. I also had to play them with apple quick time as windows media player reported an error. The avi file for one reel ran a bit over 2 minutes but I discovered the second half of it was a rerun of most of the first half. Quality on all was worse than expected even factoring for the damage. The most important part (a few seconds - and only recording - of my yet to be mother in 1953) was darker than the rest on the digital conversion. I know the film is not darker as I used another technique to get video of each still frame prior to sending it in. Oh yea, one other thing. On all my reels many of the frames were cut in the middle. That is to say on the digital version many frames contained the bottom of one frame and the top of the next. If you are old enough to remember, it appears like the old vertical hold problem of very old TVs except no big black bar between frames. I hope Legacy Digital is different. That way if I decide to risk more money with someone else I might get something better. Some of the jitter or jumpiness might be unavoidable but the frames even had parts that jumped back or forward and like the split frames that has to be from bad editing not damaged film. Sorry Scott. I don't know if you did the work or hired a pre-teen but this is what I got and is my honest review. read more

I'm very pleased with the results of Scott's/Legacy Digital's work in transferring the 8mm & Super 8 home movies I had to a digital format. I chose Legacy Digital after checking into several companies - some which are nationally advertised. After seeing on Legacy's website the care they took with film transfers and the improved quality, I decided to go with them. The other companies didn't impress me like Legacy did, and none of them had a better price. And I was shocked that one of the nationally advertised companies does not transfer the sound of Super 8 films! Scott was very helpful all the way through the process. He answered my questions about shipping the films to him. When he got the package (with the films) he called me and explained that my order had a mistake. I had thought just 2 of the reels were 8mm (with no sound) but there were 4. He gave me a revised price. Later he sent an email when they started processing the movies and then he called when they were done. Previously I had used a device from the library to transfer the films to digital files (but no sound). The oldest Super 8 films were in poor shape - they were mostly blue in color and very grainy. Upon viewing the Legacy files I was amazed with the quality of the video & sound. The color was restored, the graininess was gone, and the voices were clear. (See before & after images of baby in crib.) Scott even helped with a problem in a couple parts of the Super 8 films. While checking the Legacy files I noticed that in a couple places the voices were faster than normal & higher pitch. I mentioned this to Scott and he explained the problem was caused by the battery in the camera being low on power. Even though this wasn't a problem from the processing of the films, Scott spent extra time to adjust the sound and passed the revised files to me (through Dropbox). The voices were restored to normal! So, I'm glad I chose to go with Legacy. Scott was very helpful, he kept me updated, the quality was excellent, and he even spent extra time to correct a problem caused by the camera. read more

I had wanted for YEARS to preserve my collection of VCR tapes of my children growing up. Now that they are grown in their 30's with children of their own, it was time to do something. I did my Due Diligence and researched all kind of vendors who digitized VCR tapes. I read countless reviews from consumer oriented magazines & blogs, and from people who used the vendor services. It became apparent that Legacy Digital was consistently getting better reviews than the other bigger names which included national brands such as Legacy Box, Sams Club, Walgreens, down to local outfits such as videographers. So I contacted Legacy Digital and owner SCOTT got back to me within an hour. We spoke by phone and he helped me decide what it was what I actually wanted to do with these home memories. So I boxed up 33 VCR tapes, sent them off to Scott in early October 2018. He acknowledged me when he received the box and then we discussed the final estimate for the digital reproductions. I had Scott make me two (2) complete copies on two (2) external hard drives. He explained the f9ormat he would put them into and said this would allow TV's and laptops to play the videos. On December 19, 2018 my box arrived with the original 33 VCR tapes and the two (2) external hard drives containing all the videos. Now I can give each of my daughters their own hard drive holding all the childhood memories. I watched the videos and WOW! the pictures are amazing after 30 + years old. I cried and cried watching these movies, since my beloved wife who passed away is now alive again on my TV and laptop computer. Thank You Scott. I made the right decision selecting you for this project. I give my whole hearted recommendation to anyone reading this review and thinking about doing what I did. Wow! I sent in 16 VHS home movie tapes, beginning in 1989. None of them had been viewed for years due to lack of player, etc. I had them put on discs as well as on a flash drive (all of which they were able to put onto ONE drive!) The box arrived and I immediately grabbed the flash drive, plugged it into my laptop, and suddenly was transported back 33 years instantly! Knowing I did not have time then to view the many hours, I was able to fast forward and even jump from tape to tape instantly! Amazing! I was almost speechless at seeing my 33 year old son as a newborn, our daughters as teenagers, my wife young and thin, and my parents and even my grandmother, alive again right in front of me. The memories and also many emotions came flooding back. I cannot come up with enough positives. From the arrival of my tapes at their facility, until the day they were shipped, I received periodic updates via email, as well as some actual personal phone calls from Scott about progress, completion, shipping, etc. WARNING: If you are in a big hurry, forget it. I sent them in mid January, and just received them this week. However; it made no difference, since we had not viewed them for YEARS! The fact that they are that busy and take that much care to do it correctly is a positive for me. I already thanked Scott and told him I would be sending more, this time some of those small format video tapes which, again, I have no way of watching except through the viewfinder of the original camera! I sent Legacy Digital 8mm film from the early 60's that no one in my family had seen since shortly after it was made and I cried watching my grandparents emoting and behaving the ways I would have at the age they were at that time - because I am their age now. Legacy Digital ain't shot any of that footage and I won't thank them for that, but the quality is crystal clear as it gets, even with the basic service (which I chose because I preferred having the raw footage so that I can do any post-production clean up on my own). The process was simple - I received a quote almost immediately and speaking with the owner is easy, he's quick to respond, and is incredibly easy to speak to. I delivered half of my reels in person because I wanted to see the shop in person before I trusted them with my rushes, and the person transferring the footage at the office who helped me fill out the necessary paperwork was clear, concise, and kind. I saw the equipment they had set up transferring film and it was a well kept environment despite the fact that they were clearly very busy. They shipped my footage back by UPS and it was delivered safely and soundly, they packed it very well. I sent the rest of my footage to them to be processed and can't wait to see how it looks. I would recommend anyone send their footage here - they know the difference between file export types and use a scanner, not a projector/camera set up to shoot the film through a digital camera. My friends and family and I made some backyard Super 8 monster movies back in the 1980s. They were a lot of fun, and we remember them fondly. When the time came, I turned to Legacy Digital to handle the transfer. I knew Legacy was using a reliable scanner that handles film gently. I also knew that the owners and staff are actually just as knowledgeable about small gauge film as they are about the latest digital technology. They know and love the old stuff and the new stuff. I was on the brink of shipping a few of my beloved family videos to one of the big companies I heard advertise on the radio to try them out when I did some online research and found Legacy Digital Productions. Best decision I ever made. Instead of talking to a random "chat" person online at one of the big companies, Scott Foster of Legacy Digital answered the phone himself, talked me through the process and gave me the confidence to give him more than 100 family videos to transfer to hard drive all at once. He was extremely professional and did absolutely beautiful work. I just got my latest film transfers back from Legacy Digital, and I had to say WOW. I am totally amazed. I received some old 16mm films from my brother in law, that belonged to his Dad, and they were stored in the garage, some of them outside of a film can, some dusty and dirty. They are old WWII news reals, and other films. The edges were curing, and some of them smelled like vinegar, and I wasn't sure if they would be able to be transferred, so I called Scott at Legacy Digital to come take a look and see what he could do. They had done a great job on my super 8 films, and so I thought I would give it a try. He looked at them and said that they should be able to copy them. When I got them back, I was totally amazed. They were very clean and clear, one even had sound, which was a surprise to me, and some of them were also in color from back in the 40s. I am extremely happy with the work that was done, and I wouldn't go anywhere else. They come and pick up the files, and then deliver them, so you don't have to worry about them getting lost in the mail, and the quality is amazing. I had about 10 mini-dv tapes that I needed to get converted over to digital files. Costco does this, and generally I really like them and know they stand behind their products. Without asking many questions I sent them one of my tapes to get converted. I was really disappointed. The conversion quality was OK - but I had taped everything in a 16:9 aspect ratio but it was converted to 4:3. That meant that there were people who were at birthday parties, or Disney trips who were cut out of the memories. I was bummed. So, I started calling around to see if I could find ANYONE who would convert to 16:9 (what I shot it in). The only one who said they could do it was Legacy Digital. Scott could tell that I was skeptical and he said "Hey, man, we'll convert it to however we shot it - we do it right." I gave him a shot and I am THRILLED that I did. Not only did he deliver on the aspect ratio - but the picture quality is definitely better than Costco's. The pricing was similar - but for a one time expense that I hope my kids and maybe grandkids use - I would have gladly paid double. I'm really glad I found Legacy Digital - Thanks, Scott! read more

I worked with Scott at Legacy Productions in Irvine to transfer 10 reels of old home movies without sound (8 MM reels). Years ago I picked up one of their flyers at an exhibit booth at the Orange County Fair. Now that I was ready to get these put on digital for my computer, I found this old flyer. That is amazing in itself (that I still had it). I checked out the company online and found they still exist and I particularly liked the process they use (not projecting on a screen and recording it again which might lose quality, like so many of the companies do). They turned out great on a flash drive which I provided. I saved them on my computer, then directly imported them into iMovie on my MAC and I added my own music and created finished movies. I had a great time picking out just the right music for them and adding titles, etc. I can't thank Scott enough for his patience answering my questions to help me along getting them copied onto my end. It took about 5 or 6 weeks in my case to receive them. I would recommend them to everyone. They are a reputable company. read more

Fantastic, is the word I would use. My parents had taken 8mm movies of the family back in 1957 thru 1972. Had all the families, both sides, and friends, in most of the movies. Some of these old movies were 60 years old. Many hours of family movies, the old days. Scott, who I spoke to, the owner of Legacy Digital, assured me customer satisfaction was his goal. He spent some time explaining the process to digitize the film. Really, when was the last time you spoke to the owner of a business, on his cell phone. Long story short, the results of the film to digital were fantastic. The film is cleaned before the transfer begins. I showed my 90 year old aunt some of the film, she had tears in her eyes. She was about 28 years old when some were taken. She saw her dad who died in 1960, saw her son, died in 1986. Oh my, I don't even know where to start of this wonderful company. I am on the east coast and found these folks through a search. From the first phone call to ask questions to the completion of my order I could not have been more pleased. I had a lot of 8mm film to be transferred that goes back to the early 60's. A large job. They were in contact from the time they received the reels of film to the completion of the job. I received the thumb drives yesterday and sat and watched every reel and oh the memories. Childhood memories preserved and brought back to life with the ease of digital access and no need for hauling out the old film projector or concern about old films splitting. It's such a pleasure dealing with a real person one on one let alone the owner of the company vs. a Costco or big box store. The quality of the conversion from film to hard drive is excellent and now I can play the movies on a flat screen TV.
