Not much too look at, definitely showing some real age!

This is the kind of place that I routinely search out for a food adventure - a reto-style Mom & Pop restaurant, especially if it serves up barbecue, hamburgers, and hot dogs. As the oldest operating cafe (established in 1922) in the Montgomery/Stanly counties area, this place seemed like a natural, especially considering that their web site touts their pit-cooked, hickory smoked Pork Barbecue, Hamburger, and Hot Dog thusly: "We are probably most known for the pit-cooked bar-b-que that we cook. We use hickory wood and people in the community often comment on the delicious smell coming from the pit on firing days! We make our secret recipe sauce to top off our bar-b-que. Our burgers are absolutely "to die for"! We buy local fresh hamburger and pat out our burgers daily. We top off our burgers and hot dogs with our own secret recipe chili and slaw. The recipes that we use can be traced back to the early 1940's. At this point none of us are sure exactly where the original recipes came from." Sounded like a great food experience, but it was hardly that as once again Anticipation was greater the Participation! The Pork Barbecue has some smokiness to it, but there is little to recommend it after that. It is basically under sauced out of the kitchen, and neither the 2 house sauces or the commercial hot sauce helped much. The texture is very different - the meat is neither chopped nor pulled, but rather cut in to small cubes. I would assume to accomplish this by slicing the meat into "steaks" and then dicing it. I don't care for that approach. The slaw was not a favorite, rather bland with some chopped tomato - not the first time I've run into slaw with tomato being served with pork barbecue ( some in the Salisbury area), but it didn't help this version. The Cheeseburger was also sub-par, with a very mushy texture, little flavor, and very little cheese. he meat may have been secured locally and hand patted, but not recently! The Hot Dog was decent - nice wiener, and what there was of the chili was good. The service was reasonably good, but then again, we were the only ones there. All in all, a very disappointing experience, not one that will be repeated.

Order a bbq plate a sweet tea and a banana pudding and you'll feel like you went back to the days when they felt slower.

Let's start with there was no line today! I anticipated a…read moreline as they're open on Saturdays and being that it was a holiday, I knew people would be out there. However there wasn't so we were able to walk right on in. There were some folks inside as well, and tables for us to sit. It's similar to most BBQ places where you order your meats by the pound. We had brisket, ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were so tender they fell off the bone. Literally just pulled the bone out. The flavors were outstanding. There was bbq sauce but truly wasn't needed, more just to enhance the flavors. The brisket was moist and tender. Seasoned to perfection. It as well needed nothing more. The pork was really good. Tender and juicy. We had a few sides but the most amazing one was the watermelon salad. With the mint, lime, cojita cheese, cucumbers, and red onions it was mind blowing. The way everything in the salad blended so well together was perfection. The Mac and cheese were just as top tier. The way the cheese pulled, the kick it had you could tell this was recipe that has been used for years. There was a bite to it and it was perfect. We also had the Mexican street corn that burst with so many flavors. And lastly we tried the hash brown casserole. It was definitely different but equally as delicious. The service was quick. The ladies that assisted us with our sides were the most friendliest. They encouraged us on the selection of sides, and shared their favorites with us. Overall one of the best BBQ I've had, definitely the best BBQ in NC.

We arrived at 9:45 on a chilly, drizzly day and there were probably 50 people in line ahead of us. There was a friendly staff member monitoring and organizing the line and she told us we were there on a 'slow' day because of the weather. After the restaurant opened at 11, we waited in line for probably another 45 minutes until we got inside to order. The brisket was great, but the best things we had were the kolaches (stuffed breakfast rolls available before they open), Cheerwine hot link sausage, and fruit crisp. The Cheerwine sausage was the biggest surprise. It had a great flavor and wasn't sweet - I've never had anything like it before. When we get a chance to go back, we'll probably skip the pulled pork and mac & cheese. They were fine but there's a lot to try and these weren't anything special.

They were absolutely outstanding: two very large, circular hushpuppies that might be mistaken for an onion ring, served hot out of the fryer. Superb. Best hushpuppy I've had in years. My sweet potato casserole was good, although the consistency was a bit on the soupy side. It had a hint of brown sugar, but no pecans for texture. The red slaw rates a meh; bland almost to the point of being flavorless. The chopped pork was the biggest disappointment of the meal. It didn't have a hint of smokiness, but instead was uncharacteristically sweet and unlike eastern NC or Lexington-style 'q. Neither of us cared for it. Service was good and the restaurant has your typical small-town BBQ joint feel. Barbecue restaurants are really about smoked meat and the chopped pork came up short here. If it wasn't for the incredibly tasty hushpuppies, this would be a 2-star review.
