The ambiance is very Spanish - wooden furniture, thatched chairs, outdoor patio - it is much bigger in the back than what it seems like from the front. The sangria was on the sweeter side. If that floats your boat, you have come to the right place. We also got the flour less chocolate fudge cake to share. It was a big enough portion that it seemed a lot even for 2 people. The chocolate was pretty chocolate-y and it wasn't too dense for a fudge cake. The ice cream accompanying it was very nice. Went here for the first time and met a friend for breakfast. Great ambiance both inside and a big patio area outside which I will try out next time. My friend had the papagayo skillet and loved it! Could only eat half and took the test home. He raved about the green salsa. I had the loco moco for a change from my usual. It was pleasantly different from the traditional but very tasty! The grilled pineapple and chili sauce was a nice treat. Hamburger patty could have been a bit thicker but it was in a great gravy. Regretfully experience was extremely unpleasant. We had a party of 5 traveling far to visit with each other and 1.5 hrs into our dinner were told we have 30 min before we need to leave for next reservation. This is absolutely unacceptable! Not ever have we heard of this and have been there several times before! We were offered a table inside (there is a reason I reserved outside patio because the music is too loud) or we had to leave! The manager was extremely unapologetic and we were told that's the restaurant industry. We've never heard of this. Lived in San Diego 30+ years! We're patrons too! Papagayo has a great vibe. The bar is So cal with a Sports Bar feel with multiple screens. The outdoor seating is well done with both High tops and table seating. Each area has its own vibe while integrating nicely . Parking is found on site in the Public Parking lot .But enough of the design description . This is the second time I've had dinner here with the same group of friends. The first time, several years ago, was lovely & the food was excellent. This time, we sat on the patio instead of indoors. The table was covered in flies when we sat down, but the hostess was lovely and apologized. The service was not great, but the biggest issue was the food. We ordered Mussels that were not cleaned and debearded. None of them were. After waiting for probably 10 minutes to flag down someone to send our server over, we explained that they were not clean/debearded & sent them back. My boyfriend and I have eaten here twice and each of those times we have tried their skillets. DON'T SLEEP ON THE SKILLETS! They are so so delicious and flavorful. The portions are also very good for the price ($18). The picture I included is our favorite skillet that we tried and it was packed with so many things. It was called the Ranchero Skillet and it had eggs, tomato sauce, chorizo, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, cheese, and tortillas on the side. The other night, we shared a Caesar salad, pozole, and tallow steak frites - yum!! Everything was great, and the live music is always a nice touch. We started with Manhattans and their 50% off house margaritas (so glad it was a Monday!) had the Brager Broa bread and their pesto dip for starters. Their pesto is OUT OF THIS WORLD. For our main courses we had the Butternut Squash Ravioli, short rib, and lamb. My lamb was pretty tasty! Needed a little more seasoning would be nice. Despite an extremely odd layout with some tables being indoor, some outdoor, some in front of residential building, the restaurant did a great job with uniting everything. Our server was exceptional and very knowledgeable on the menu and gave me a great recommendation for vodka drink which was not too sugary. This used to be one of our favorite spots, but the last two visits have been a huge disappointment. Nearly 50 minutes for a burrito and a skillet, no communication about kitchen delays, and when the food came the burrito was awful (burnt hash browns, overcooked eggs, wrong beans). Server went on break mid-meal, and I had to track someone down just to pay. No manager ever checked in, even though several tables around us were having the same issues. I take people to the Encinitas location because the service & food are the best! The server, Rebecca, is great, friendly & feels more like a friend! All of the staff there are amazing. The manager is always welcoming & willing to step in to help with his staff. I love that! The artichoke bottoms are to die for.. the burgers , can't go wrong! The service here is great, the waitress was very nice. I enjoy outdoor seating and this restaurant has plenty of it to soak in the sun. The food was good, I have to say the tacos were my favorite. I got a lobster roll but I didn't really care for it too much as there was a certain spice, maybe thyme, that was just way too overbearing and overpowered the flavor of everything else. I know it's a popular menu item so I'm sure some people love it, I just didn't personally. The bacon mac and cheese on the other hand was delicious! I'm honestly not a cheese person but I always love to get Mac n cheese, I know that's weird lol, but this was was just so perfectly made and sooo creamy, and the bacon had an amazing flavor so I loved it! Overall, some good food, and some terrible food with high prices. Terrible service. OK ambiance. (1/5) Service: The staff do not know anything. We asked TWO different waiters about Catch of the Day and they both did not know. They came back and forgot to ask about it, so we had to ask again! We asked the waiter about a few of the menu items that he recommended. He told us that he hasn't tried most of the food and couldn't say much about any dish! The hostess said her favorite was the truffle fries. A staff that brought our food did not know the menu at all. She said this is the "P" dish which was the paella. For my dish, she said "the one that ends with "noff" which referred to Filet Stroganoff. I couldn't believe it! When taking away our plates, one of the staff members dripped sauce onto my friend. (3/5) Food: The bread they served was very dry and served with no butter or sauce. It was teeth breaking and not enjoyable. We ordered the bread with pesto for $7 which was the same free bread they gave with runny, store bought tasting pesto. One of us ordered the prime rib which was mostly fat. See picture below! The meat portion tasted great though. Mussels for the appetizer were amazing. 5/5 I do not recommend the Filet Stroganoff. It tasted very bland and the meat was tough for the price. (3/5) Ambiance: I really liked the fire in the middle of the table. I also liked the outdoor seating a lot. However, it was very noisy (not the restaurant's fault) and one of the staff moved the heater which tilted and the metal made a loud bang. Very pleasantly surprised! This was the Leucadia location and received good Yelp reviews. I visited for lunch and had a choice of ordering from the lunch or breakfast menu. So many delicious items to choose from. I decided on the Rueben sandwich and paid $2 extra to get onion rings instead of French fries. The sandwich was excellent. It was packed with lean corned beef, cheese and sauerkraut. I ate 1/2 and brought the rest home. One friend had the ahi nachos....delicious! Another had a short rib birria/egg dish, also delicious! Other friends had the wahine salad with shrimp added and another had the arugula and prosciutto flatbread. We were all thrilled with our food. I went here on a Thursday morning, and it wasn't busy at all. There was one person working and seemed manageable for him. The restaurant is super nice, offering indoor, outdoor, and bar seating. The outdoor tables towards the inner of the restaurant have heaters that are close to the table. We got passionfruit iced teas, and it was very unsweetened and unflavored. It tasted like normal iced tea. For the food, we got the papagayo skillet and the chicken fried steak. The potatoes are supposed to be "rosemary potatoes", but were lacking the rosemary. It would've been nice for the potatoes to be smaller cuts in the skillet. On the other hand, I asked for over medium eggs, and they were cooked perfectly!
