Italy, and Florence in particular, is known for their steak. They call it "T-bone" but we call it a Porterhouse, which is both the filet and the strip steak. The portions are meant for two because the minimum weight is 1 kilogram (100 hectograms), which is 2.2 pounds. My wife doesn't really like steak, so it was up to me to eat it. It sounded like a lot, but the weight is off-set by bone and steak, probably making it more like 1.5 lb. of actual steak, which is a lot, but doable (and I finished ALL of it). Please look at my photos, which show the entire process, from cutting the steak, presenting the raw steak at the table, the grilling over coals, the cutting and serving at the table. The steak cost 72 Euros, which is about 80 dollars USD. That's a lot, but checking Ruth Chris's 2.5 lb Porterhouse steak (with bone and fat) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the cost is $125 compared to my $80 steak at Le Fonticine. Plus, in Italy they include tip and tax, so that is more like $80 in Italy vs. $165 in Minneapolis. A steak in a city like New York would cost considerably more than that. My wife had an artichoke salad which she loved, as well as the ravioli stuffed with Ricotta cheese, spinach, sage, and butter. She loved it. We both had a glass of really nice classic Chianti wine. In addition, they gave us a free sample of the vegetable soup, which was amazing, even though I am not a fan of vegetables. A complementary bread basket was a very nice addition. The ambiance could not have been more charming or romantic. The service was spot friendly and professional. As you can tell, I would return to Le Fonticine in a heartbeat. It was superb! We first visited Le Fonticine in 1997. It remains my favorite restaurant in Florence. It has a beautiful style which is elegant but not stuffy. The food, decor and service are outstanding. We have had seveal special meals here. The steak Florentine is the best I have ever had anywhere. This is a must try. read more

After being in Italy a few times I learned a very valuable lesson today. Screw the pasta and get the steak! We had the bistecca alla fiorentina and it was mind blowing. First of all, the map Yelp has isn't quite correct - this is on Via Nazionale closer to Via dell'Ariento. They were able to seat us without a reservation but it seems like they prefer people to reserve their seats. Regardless, the food was delicious and the service was great! My fiancé and I started with a cheese plate (that I didn't get a picture of because we ate it too quickly). He got the Tortelloni stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach with truffle and creamy cheese sauce, and I had the Slices chicken breast with wild salad and Pecorino cheese sauce. Both were amazing but in very different ways. His sauce was very rich (which I finished off with the bread) whereas the flavors with the chicken were more subtle but still sublime. The pecorino cheese sauce was delicious, but I understand why they only included a small cup - more would have overwhelmed the flavor of the chicken itself. Finally, we split a tiramisu for dessert, which was just an incredible taste and texture. We also heard people saying that they had come by for lunch and liked it so much they came back for dinner. While I myself would rather try new places given a short amount of time in the city, I understand the temptation here. Definitely visit at least once. read more

We were a group of four visiting Florence after spending a few days in Amsterdam and Paris. This was our first enjoyable meal in Europe. I had the pork steak and Swiss Chard and I devoured it all. Mario (super Mario), is by far the nicest, most polite, gracious and best server I have ever encountered anywhere in all my traveling! We ate late upon arriving in Florence and was lucky to of had this restaurant recommended to us by our concierge. The place was completely packed, and as we were turning away to find another option due to it being so busy, Mario said to please wait just a moment and he would get us in. At first I had some doubts to how it would be. First off it was a recommendation from the hotel, secondly it was close to a touristy market, and lastly filled mostly with non Italian speaking clientele. All of which could be a recipe for the food not being good. Glad to say that these assumptions were all wrong. We had a wonderful meal here. Service was very good, but we did get competing recommendations on wine, but both bottles were good. Started with the trio of bruschetta that were all good but not great. For dinner two of us split the bistecca florentine and it was amazing. Another one of us ordered the pork ragu pasta which was one of the single best pastas we had on our whole trip. We went here on the recommendation of a friend who had eaten there. It was our first night in Florence and we'd had a very long drive from Assisi. We could walk from our hotel, which was a huge plus as it was raining. When we got there we were warmly greeted and when I accidentally spilled my glass of water on the table cloth, we were immediately moved to another table. The food was excellent, the server was appropriately attentive, had a good wine recommendation and overall it was a very warm, relaxed atmosphere. They get three stars because they worked us in on a busy Sunday night and for the mozzarella on the caprese salad. Otherwise it would have been two stars. Our pasta with ham and asparagus, a few bits of meat and asparagus cooked to grey/green mush. Risotto with zucchini flowers and saffron, tasted like rice and broth, no saffron flavor and no discernable zucchini. This is the place in Florence for Bistecca alla Fiorentina. If you're not a fan of medium-rare to rare steaks, choose another dish - this is how it's done in Florence, and there's a reason. This particular cut of beef tastes better this way. We started by sharing an order of pappardelle with wild boar ragu (another Tuscan signature dish) followed by a thick cut of bistecca for 2 (about 3 inches thick), which came with a side of Tuscan white beans. Everything was incredibly delicious. They accommodated a last minute reservation on a Saturday night and we had one of our most memorable travel meals. We found this place by chance after walking around starving trying to find somewhere good. Finally we found it!!! This place was great! We walked through the kitchen to get to our dining area and saw amazing steak! So we all had to order steak or veal chops!! Yum!!! The steak was great, the appetizer was incredible and then we ended with amazing tiramisu and lemonchello! My mom loved this restaurant so much that she wanted to give our waiter a tip but I told her not to because they charged us for each side that the waiter forced on us and made it seem like they were part of the meal.
