We decided a few years ago to replace our 40+ year-old kitchen cabinets and 20+ year-old formica…read morecounters, but found the process of shopping for cabinets and obtaining estimates for installation MUCH more complex and frustrating than expected. Cabinet sellers would give us estimates for cabinets and counters, but refuse or be unable to give us an estimate for installation. One cabinet supplier gave me the name of the installer, but, despite repeated calls and conversations, he never bothered to give me an estimate. I gave up for quite a while. Last year, I decided to give it another try, and contacted several cabinet sellers, including BKC Kitchen and Bath in Englewood. That proved to be a very smart move. BKC's salesperson, Pete Von Esten, was extremely helpful, patient, and responsive. I contacted BKC because they sell a brand of cabinets, Crystal, that I had identified to be a solid brand. Pete was very helpful in explaining the pros and cons of framed versus frameless cabinets, and in clarifying the features of and differences between the somewhat less expensive Crystal Current line and the more expensive Crystal Keyline or Encore. Pete won my confidence when he did not try to "up-sell" me, but forthrightly recommended, given the style and finish we sought, we go with the less expensive Current line, which is very well constructed and could be upgraded with more plywood, etc., at a modest additional cost. We ordered framed Crystal Current cabinets. Pete won our business thanks to: (1) his honesty, courtesy, and patience in preparing repeatedly revised plans based upon our decision to go with replacement of soffits and taller cabinets extending to the ceiling; (2) his recommendation, when I asked him for the name of a contractor he recommends, that I contact Dave Ricard at Interior Solutions. To my relief, Dave, though very busy, responded as quickly as possible to my request he come by, gave us an estimate in short order, and readily adjusted it when we decided to add removal of soffits, "drywalling", and "taping" where the soffits had been, as well as "can" ceiling lights in lieu of suspended fixtures. His estimate seemed reasonable. Finally, we had the information we needed! Dave thereby helped BKC "seal the deal". Dave is (for good reason) very busy. Nailing down a date took some time and persistence because of schedule conflicts, but Dave showed up exactly when he said he would, in late April. Dave and his assistant, Joe, very quickly won our confidence and affection. Dave and Joe are very personable, but also very hard-working, efficient, and meticulous. They maintained a clean and orderly work site, putting down mats or putting up plastic sheeting to protect our house from debris or dust. Dave readily worked with us to add several additional ceiling "can" LED lights as well as under-cabinet LED lights, which required considerable additional rewiring and time, at significant but reasonable additional cost. They consistently showed up when expected, and never left us uninformed about next steps or "hanging". Throughout, BKC and Interior Solutions put their customer first. The Cambria quartz slabs Dave had ordered via his preferred counter fabricator arrived at the fabricator's shop with a scratch in the surface. Rather than just polish the surface and foist the counters on us (something to which we would have been none the wiser), Dave insisted on replacement of the slab, because polishing of the surface instead of replacement would void the warranty. When we discovered a small crack on an interior cabinet component before the counters were installed, BKC gave us a very reasonable credit for part of the cost of the cabinet, and Dave quite expertly repaired it. When we faced a minor glitch because not enough "scribe molding" had accompanied the cabinets, Dave and Pete agreed that BKC's tech would install it when it came in. BKC's tech did so after Dave's work was done, along with cabinet door restrictors. Pete also very kindly had the tech cut us some extra shelves at no charge from extra particle board shelving BKC had (much cheaper than ordering extras from Crystal). We could not be more pleased with Pete, BKC, or the beautiful cabinets they supplied us. Outstanding across the board (excuse the pun)!

Overall rating for BKC = "F" - "Designer" (Gavy) = "F-"…read more - Resolving our huge list of issues/problems (Gavy, Heather, Paul) = "D-" - Showroom = "C+" - Installer/repairs (Brian, John) = "B" - Delivery = "C" We engaged BKC primarily because they represented the line/manufacturer of the cabinets we wanted for our complete kitchen remodel (Eclipse). We were assigned a designer, Gavy, to create a rather simple cabinet layout design for our pretty straight-forward kitchen. Most new cabinetry was nearly the same or very similar to our existing layout. But Gavy got many things wrong from the first iteration (for example, we all discussed and agreed in our initial meeting that we'd add a small island to our kitchen, that we all accepted the minimal clearances, and that we all agreed adding a peninsula of any kind would not work; the first layout design had a peninsula!). We found Gavy to have limited or no knowledge of design principles to help guide aesthetic decisions, and we ended up specifying our own details for what to include in the layout design and details for the cabinetry choices. Gavy proved to be a salesperson with some training on the layout cad software rather than an actual "designer". We chose our own installer, mainly because after our cabinets were ordered, we had lost trust in BKC. During installation, several serious layout design errors were found and we began multiple rounds of getting BKC to correct these problems, leaving us with a partially-completed kitchen for months. Errors included lack of needed clearance for the built-in freezer/fridge unit and the adjacent microwave handle - the handle would have hit/dented the fridge door upon opening. Other cabinet bases were simply ordered incorrectly (some were also incorrectly manufactured by Eclipse). BKC did finally accept some responsibility for their errors as did (apparently) the cabinet manufacturer. This required endless emails and conference calls, culminating with working through all problems with the CEO/person in charge. Solutions took multiple rounds of ordering cabinet replacements (including entire cabinet boxes worth thousands), multiple installation sessions and overall delays of several months. BKC did work with us through the bitter end of getting almost everything acceptably done. It was painful. It was extremely frustrating and disruptive. It was extremely disappointing. After spending around $50k, we would never recommend BKC for anything, ever, to anyone.
