Kale Caesar, add jammy egg & sweet potato, dressing on the side
Maggie J.

Popped in to LB Kitchen for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon around 12:30. I immediately loved the whole vibe of the restaurant. There is a refrigerated section with grab and go food options along with a well curated drink selection as well as a significant pantry section with healthy snack, treats, protein bars etc. We placed our order at the counter and were able to snag one of only a handful of indoor tables. I should honestly be removing one star at this point because our salads took a full 30 minutes to come out. Tables that ordered waaaay after us were getting their food but I ended up enjoying my food so much that I don't want to deduct the star. I had the kale caesar, add jammy egg and sweet potato, dressing on the side and my husband had the LB bowl, add chicken. The bowls are a little on the pricey side especially with the add ons but if I lived in Portland I would be ordering from here all of the time!

The weather was dire, but I thought it worth scrounging for parking in this neighborhood and walking through the rain, and I was right. Ordering a vegan breakfast sandwich yielded a fresh and dynamic experience, with greens, marinated carrots, and tofu in some sort of creamy sauce. A cookie with melty chocolate presumably was not vegan, but I ate it slowly and enjoyed it. The place had a market with a selection of niche food items that I would have considered were I a local. I managed to grab a spot, but seating is limited and the place was bustling.

Vegan Coconut Caramel Latte, All Day Sandwich

A close friend put me onto LB Kitchen and I was truly sad that I hadn't discovered it sooner. It's great for everyone as they have options if you're vegan or gluten free. The space is perfect for getting work done as they have plenty of seating! One thing that I greatly appreciate is the fact that their hours are 8 am to 6pm every single day. I enjoy coming on week days in the afternoon as it is less busy and super easy to find seating. I would highly recommend ordering the Vegan Coconut Caramel Latte (definitely iced) paired with the All Day Sandwich!

LB Bowl (vegan)

Really cute cafe, lots of plant based options. The menu doesn't have vegan items explicitly labelled, but it's fairly obvious which ones are and the staff knows as well. I had the LB bowl, which was really delicious and felt very healthy as well, with lots of pickled veggies and brown rice and avocado and a delicious spicy sauce. They had baked goods on display, with several labelled gluten free and vegan options like cookies and scones. They also sell some packaged treats and small merch items. Area for dining in is very nice and the whole place is kept clean.

It had been years since I visited LB Kitchen, and now that I've "rediscovered" them, I can't believe I'm not coming here all the time! It's an absolute haven if you're vegan or gluten-free. The space is incredibly contemporary and minimalist with an abundance of natural lighting pouring in from their near floor to ceiling windows. Lovely seating options if you're staying (high bar seats, tables for two, outside if you're timing is right); usually pretty easy to find on-street parking (especially early on weekdays) nearby if you're taking out/picking up your online order. The (thoughtfully created and yet still so customizable) menu has so many incredible options, you may find yourself wanting one of everything (I don't blame you); or, if you're lucky enough to live in Portland, working your way through the menu one item at a time (which is kind of what I'm doing). My current faves: 1) The Vegan Coconut Caramel Latte (espresso, oat milk, coconut cream, vanilla, maple syrup, sea salt): it's coffee forward with a hint of sweetness, it's creamy, and I could absolutely drink two of these. 2) The LB Bowl (brown rice, house pickled veg, kimchi, avocado, miso slaw, organic greens, sweet chili sauce, vegan sriracha mayo, hemp seeds; trust me, and add the sweet chili tofu): this has been on their menu since day one, and it's been my go-to since day one. It's satisfying, it's filling, it's flavorful, it's go so many interesting and different textures. I always feel good after eating this! 3) All of their baked goods! Runner-up: 1) Avocado Toast (avocado, truffle oil, smoky spices, organic greens, hemp seeds, grilled sourdough): probably one of the best in the city, they do a really good job at adding a thick layer of chunky avocado. If biting into crunchy bread is a problem, just ask them for a lighter grill on the sourdough (otherwise it can be a bit hard). Still to try: 1) The Vegan Breakfast Sandwich (local and organic fried tofu, carrot bacon, organic greens, cashew cheese, vegan sriracha mayo, sprouted wheat bread): I appreciate how many extra things you can add to this like avocado (sliced or truffle mash), tomato, pickled things, ALL THE THINGS. Two cons: 1) It's on the pricier side, especially when you start adding extras. 2) When they get busy, they get BUSY. That 1130 to 130pm time? Super long lines. Also,, good luck finding anywhere to sit (and if you are at a table, expect people to be hovering around waiting for you to get up and go). TL;DR: If I was traveling to Portland, for me, this WOULD be a destination spot that I'd seek out, immediately love, and probably return to again during my vacation (even though I had other places I wanted to visit)! Pro tip if it's nice out? Get your food to go and walk up to the Eastern Prom for a picnic overlooking Casco Bay!

Banana Milk Latte, Avocado Toast, Coconut Cake

I stopped in here today for a late breakfast. It's a cute little place with a decent amount of seating and a few shelves full of some healthier pantry and wellness items. They also have some really cute merch like t-shirts, hats, etc. It was fun to look around at what they had. I ordered the avocado toast with an egg, and a banana milk iced latte. I also grabbed a piece of the coconut cake to try. It was all really good. The latte was very lightly sweetened, if at all (which is my preference) and the banana milk was great in the coffee. The avocado toast was well seasoned and fresh. It's definitely a more pricey spot. I wouldn't say it's unreasonable, as everything seems to be made with quality ingredients and it's all very good, but it is certainly more on the expensive side. I'll definitely be back again!

Just stopped in for a coffee the other day. A little pricey but def really good quality and tasted great. It was pretty busy and they have a cute little shop in there as well. I didn't get any food but the food did look good. I will be back to try food sometime!

LB Kitchen snuck into first place as best vegan restaurant in Portland, Maine, and it's not even fully vegan. At first glance, they may come across as a basic fast casual cafe that offers espresso drinks, kale caesar salads to go, and a few cookies. BUT they are so much more. Our intrigue grew as we flipped through every page of the menu. You can't go wrong with breakfast, brunch, lunch, or bakery items. We started by pitting the bircher (overnight oats) against the hot oatmeal in a porridge playoff of sorts. The overnight oats came out ahead with their generous dousing of peanut butter and the incredible blueberry compote. The hot sweet oats were doing a lot with poached pear, orange zest, and toasted almonds, but they were a tiny bit on the watery side and could have been served in a larger bowl (lol). We hugely appreciated that they had a vegan version of the goldenmilk pancakes. These were unique and tasty and packed with blueberries. On the savory side, the vegan breakfast sandwich was dressed to impress. Probably the world's only healthy vegan breakfast sandwich (lightly grilled tofu, carrot bacon, and arugula served on sprouted whole grain bread). Epic. We were so thrilled with the breakfast that we returned for lunch the same day(!) albeit a late lunch, since that breakfast filled us up. Their bowls and salads are mostly awesome macrobiotic type options. The green on grain was soo good (especially with the addition of house pickled vegetables!) as was the chickpea curry bowl. The baked goods: innovative and consistently delicious. The peanut butter oat cake was decadent and incredible. The oatmeal raisin cookie almost brought tears to our eyes. I would have appreciated an ultra healthy option like a granola bar or an oil-free cookie, but you can't have everything. The drinks: the coffee was very good. The chai latte was great, and the golden milk latte was even better. We wouldn't have minded if they added some kombucha to their fridge :) The staff also deserve a special mention for being not only friendly but also very knowledgeable and accommodating about all of our questions a preferences. It's always a good sign when the staff has tried and liked the food they are serving. LB Kitchen's chefs are clearly culinary experts. I'm not sure why they are holding onto the few items made with bacon, eggs, and cheese, when their vegan items are delicious enough to impress and satisfy any vegan or non-vegan.

We grabbed a few sandwiches, salad and smoothies from L&B. First time there, and we will definitely return. Did takeout, which has its own entrance and counter to grab the food. Small dining room through an archway, with table service. Very clean, open kitchen. Service was very friendly. The smoothies were excellent, and the salads were fresh, crisp and tasty. Prices are reasonable for the portions.

Super casual place that serves a delicious latte. When I walked in on a Saturday near lunchtime, it was nearly full inside. Still, they didn't mind me taking my time to order. (There was no one in line behind me; I'm not a monster!) After placing my order they gave me a number placard, and my humble mug of latte was duly brought over as I settled in on a gray day. If you want a place with no pretenses, this is the one.

I haven't felt this good after a meal in a while. I needed something healthy so badly after working so much this week and found this gem during my search. They have a ton of really healthy and delicious food options ranging from salads to sandwiches to smoothies and slushies. I LOVED the vitamin sea slush because it was warm out and tasted like a refresher but it was good for you. I also got the greens on grain salad with salmon which was a hit. It's super cute inside and has a mini market to shop from. Staff was friendly and service was quick. This will be my new spot for the summer.

Great breakfast spot for my vegan friends! There are plenty of vegan and non vegan options. There are a couple of items you can buy as well inside the restaurant aside from the made to order food selection. You approach the counter to order and the staff will call your order when it's done. There is some inside and outside seating. More room to sit than you would expect for the small restaurant. Overall pleased with the experience.

This place is truly my heaven. It is a superfood palace with tons of healthy food, drinks, and a curated selection of gourmet snacks and supplements. I could easily spend $200 in here in a blissed out daze. I nearly did, but I was able to exercise a little bit of self-control. Had I been alone and not with my husband, it might've been a different story. But I digress. The point is, LB Kitchen was made for people like me, and clearly there are a lot of people like me in Portland, which makes me feel very at home there. Whether you go for coffee or a whole meal, you'll likely leave feeling uplifted and nourished and excited to return. We came here for lunch on a Saturday around 2pm. We ordered some fun looking food and drinks, and while we waited for everything to be brought out, I perused the curated little collection of to-go food and drink items. Lots of fun seltzers, supplements, snacks, drink mixes (i.e. turmeric lattes), etc. So far I've tried one of the seltzers and the turmeric latte and both have been great. To drink, we each tried one of the "functional beverages". Mine sadly isn't up on the website, but it was a mushroom coffee situation with lion's mane, adaptogens, nutmeg, coconut milk powder, cinnamon, etc. My husband got the Blue Chai (Spirulina. Butterfly Pea Flower. Ginger. Cinnamon. Nutmeg. Clove. Ashwaganda. Maca. Astragalus Root.). Both were absolutely outstanding and made us feel like we were walking on air for the next few hours. Food-wise, I got the LB Bowl (Brown Rice. House Pickled Veg. Kimchi. Avocado. Miso Slaw. Organic Greens. Sweet Chili Sauce. Vegan Sriracha Mayo.). I wanted something on the lighter side that was still interesting and this hit the spot. Lots of flavors and textures going on. All super fresh and healthy. The pickled veggies and kimchi were yummy, and the miso slaw was particularly great. I appreciated that the mayo was swiped across the side of the bowl for you to dip whatever you'd like in it, as opposed to it being slathered all over everything. My husband got one of the sandwiches, which he said was solid. He was most impressed by my mushroom coffee, as was I!
