We were pleasantly surprised to find the LB Kitchen essentially underneath our Airbnb when we visited Portland. Having a plant forward establishment that also offered gluten-free options made our stay much more pleasant as far as food options went. We visited them for breakfast and lunch several times over our 5-day stay, enjoying friendly and helpful service whether we ate inside at the cozy tables, on their open-air side-walk cafe, or had take-out. We sampled a variety of their offerings from the buckwheat pancakes with carrot bacon, the LB bowl , the kale Caesar, or the greens bowl with added tofu. They also had an array of baked good ms at the counter that spanned every dietary need. We will definitely visit here any time we're in town! read more

The location is nice to have; visiting from California, I am used to having these places very accessible. However, from my research, this seemed to be the exception to the rule in most parts of ME, so it was a great while traveling. We (my travel buddies and I) planned on returning a few times based on the menu and reviews but didn't due to the customer service, prices, and overall experience. You vote for your dollar; we will not vote for them. Ratings: Street Parking availability: Two stars Price: ONE star. What you get is very overpriced. The quality is better than being stuck with fast food, especially if you have food restrictions, but let's calm down. The prices made it clear they aren't there to support health and wellness; it's a gimmick. I understand it's a business; they need to make money, but this is a ripoff. Customer Service: Negative five stars. Rude, unwelcoming, snarky, condescending, and conceded. SO OFFPUTTING. I am from NJ and have lived in Philly and NYC for many years. This is more than just a West Coaster not understanding the East Coast. RUDE IS RUDE. Bad customer service is bad customer service. DO BETTER. There were many examples, but here are two. 1. My sisters and I walked in; nobody else was at the counter or in line, so we all picked up a menu. My sister was asking about the golden hour menu, and the woman behind the counter could not stop rolling her eyes and sighing at her three questions as if she were an idiot for not being a regular or clairvoyant. We didn't want to jump to judgment, we had been looking forward to trying this place, were fresh off 7 hours of flights, it was getting late, and things were closing, so we stayed despite this. Mistake. 2. I ordered my avocado toast with an egg; she even repeated it to me and then did not give me an egg. I let her know when the food came that, I ordered an egg. She looked at me and said "well, you didn't; you will have to come pay for that if you want it." I had no problem paying for what I ordered, but after we had just spent 102.00 for three drinks, two slices of toast, and two cookies after taxes and tip, to say "oh, I didn't hear you say that I will just give you ONE EGG", wouldn't have been too much of a stretch right? Or say, "Oh, I didn't hear you and didn't charge you. Would you mind returning, and I will ring that up for you? " NOT HARD TO DO BETTER. Food: Three stars, probably more like two, but I was craving something fresh. Drinks: One star Golden Hour Menu: Two Stars, VERY limited for the better part of when they are open Main points. 1. The food is good, although overpriced. The drinks are A FULL WASTE OF MONEY. The baked goods are fine but ordinary and overpriced. Save your money. 2. A yummy spot to grab a healthy bite to eat! We both ordered one of the salad bowls and they were delicious! The greens were very fresh and mine had a beet slaw on the side that was amazing! (I forget the name of what I got :( sorry). Off the main roads of downtown Portland, this was a perfect spot to grab some food without waiting 2 hours for a table! And we had our dogs with us, so it was nice to get to order and then go find a place to sit and eat. There is no indoor seating at the moment, but they have the order counter at the entrance. i've been going to LB Kitchen for years, at both locations in the East and West End, and now their new spot at the corner of Congress. they've always had amazing food and vibe, but the past few months have felt different. A few new counter staff don't seem to want to give me the time of day, which i'll just chalk up to me having a mustache, but the bigger thing i've noticed is a change to their smoothies and more particular, Açaí Bowls. the past few that i have ordered have just been entire soups - very contrary to the wonderful smooth texture that they used to have. part of my attraction has always been display of the food, always beautiful and i feel added value to the cost, so although it doesn't affect the overall flavor of the smoothies, todays Açaí bowl was very lacking and spilled over me the moment i opened it. like murky cereal that had been sitting. i mentioned it to the staff who said that i must have waited too long before picking it up...but i had actually been there waiting for it to be finished and opened the container immediately. so, although i'll continue to support, the recent iciness has really affected my desire to go. i feel the cost has always been justified, knowing they use good ingredients and have good ethos, but it's difficult to want to spend $15 plus tip for a somewhat less flavorful Açaí bowl greeted with indifference read more

If you're looking for clean ingredient options (sans sugar), vegan, and/or gluten free, this is an excellent place. Their flavors are really creative and interesting without overpowering the dish. I find it expensive for what it is, but worth it because I know those kinds of ingredients are always expensive. They are doing a great job here and I'm glad it exists. read more

Breakfast at LB Kitchen was GOOD. I got the açaí bowl, which was huge and had good stuff in it. I wish it had granola for some textural crunch but that's me being nit-picky. It's small in there but cute and clean. What is weird to me is that there is seating in the front where you order and then additional seating in the back of the place past the kitchen. If you sit in the back you can't see or hear your order being called... which is kind of annoying. The layout of the bussing station and the silverware and stuff isn't ideal as well because it's kind of blocked off so you can get stuck in the corner. I recently went 6 weeks without a kitchen. For someone that likes to cook at home and eat healthily - these were scary times. It was like re-living my college dorm years, although I no longer eat "Easy Mac". Thankfully, Portland has an amazing restaurant scene, which kept me from having to cook Top Ramen in a hot pot wall kettle (oh, college). My home away from home quickly became LB Kitchen. When you are dining out ALL THE TIME, you quickly become aware of how important the quality of the food is that you are putting in your body. LB Kitchen uses only the best, and it shows. They make the kinds of things I would make for myself at home, just better tasting. I've pretty much worked my way down the menu at this point, and I can say that my perfect breakfast is the Sweet and Salty Oats and a Purple Rain smoothie. It probably has something to do with my obsession with almond butter - which both of these items contain. On the savory breakfast side, the avocado toast is delicious (add an egg). For lunch, it is all about the Springy Salmon. Yes, the portion is on the small side, but it is one of the highest quality types of salmon that you can buy. If you are looking for something more filling/$, the sandwich (add avocado) is pretty large and under $10. If the yummy tastes and healthy vibes aren't enough to get you...the charm of the place might suck you in. It is bright and cheery and the staff and owners make you feel like a long lost friend. After searching online for a Portland ME restaurant that offers Whole Food Plant Based Options, I found the LB Kitchen (named after owners Lee & Bryna), a sunny but crisp 15-20 minute walk from the Holiday Inn (weather will vary). Though my handy KN95 dangled jauntily from my mittened wrist, it was unneeded as patrons place their orders at a makeshift counter in front of the outside entrance. The gentleman who took mine was cheerfully patient as I perused the menu posted on the glass window, and helpfully explained what dishes were WFPB and could be prepared without oil. 10-15 minutes later I was heading back to the hotel with my lunch (there is minimal outdoor seating behind the establishment). The food was exceptional given the standard sauces, dressings, and other processed/oil based ingredients I asked not be included. I started with the Community Bowl: a liberal base of tasty brown rice and black beans with a leafy pile of arugula (great for dilating blood vessels & lowering BP), and some tomato chunks, almond slivers, carrot shavings, and lightly salted avocado slices. Delish. I followed that with a kale side salad with shaved radish & carrot. The kale, like every other ingredient in each dish, was exceptionally fresh. It was also seasoned with a delightful lemon/vinegar combo. Lastly, the Sweet & Salty Oats, which made a great dessert: perfectly cooked rolled oats with a plucky cinnamon flavor punctuated by a subtle salty sweetness (I asked them to go light on the maple syrup). There were just enough tiny raisins and cacao nibs to complement the cinnamon and bring the flavor of the almond butter to the foreground. A few times I have ordered their matcha and gotten the cheaper culinary matcha, not ceremonial matcha as listed on the website. I realize this is a 1st world problem, but if I'm paying $6.25 + tip for matcha I expect to receive what's listed on the menu. You can tell a big difference between culinary and ceremonial in terms of taste, texture, and color. Also I ordered the eggs + toast yesterday, and it didn't come with butter. Really not sure how this place gets good reviews. We went here based on positive reviews for healthy food with good options for dietary restrictions. The smoothy we ordered was poorly blended and had massive chunks of raw ginger and other vegetable. Scone was very stale. We also had their very simple egg breakfast plate that included a single egg, breakfast salad and slice of bread. The simple salad was actually quite good, but the egg and toast/bread was no better than what you would get at Denny's. Bread was stale. Finally the restaurant was a mess. Tables were completely dirty, it was unclear where to put away dirty dishes and no one seemed to be bussing the tables. This place really felt like all style and no substance. There were plenty of options for my partner and I (both omnivores) to choose from, and modifications to salads or sandwiches were easy! This place is awesome. I went for the first time today and due to COVID it was pickup only. I ordered ahead of time online and was so pleased to see that the menu listed below each item whether it is vegan/gluten free, both of which I am. I didn't have to wonder if there were any allergens in the menu items I chose. Once I chose the item, I could remove or add an ingredient, like I didn't want bacon on a sandwich and was able to modify that. So convenient! The online ordering was super easy. Pickup was easy and the order was ready when I arrived. I ordered the LB sandwich with gluten free bread...the best gluten free bread I've ever had tbh. There are tons of vegetarian and GF options on the menu, along with healthy juices, kombucha, etc. I had such a hard time selecting my meal as everything on the menu sounded so appealing, but I went with the Sassy & Savory Oats, which is a small bowl packed with super hearty and comforting goodness. The oats are combined with one of their bone broths and topped with an egg. I remarked to my lunch date that the dish brought back a strong memory of being sick at home as a kid and having my mom make me a bowl of porridge... just like that, but elevated! And don't be fooled by the compact portion size - it's very very filling! It's a casual space where you order at the counter and bus your own tables, and it seems equally appropriate for a lunch date or for some alone time with your meal and your laptop.
