I inherited an antique clock which had never wired in my lifetime. I brought it in and dropped it off. After a few days, I received a phone call the let me know that, like precious clock makers had said, it was kit repairable the way this it was due to the structure of the glass front. Excellent work. Layne Clock's overhauled my late 18th century, Connecticut made, tall clock. Some subtle problems to identify, which took a while. They never lost hope and persisted until each of the small problems were solved to my satisfaction. A difficult challenge in a clock where every piece was handmade 230 years ago. The final installment of "A Tale of Two Post Offices" I watched my little mom sadly walk up the long driveway, kettle bell purse and cane dragging in the pea gravel. Still smarting from the USPS drubbing, I turned up the Lynyrd Skynyrd, dropped the MDX in drive and spun out, kicking up a cloud of hot Tucson dust. I'd be damned if I'd let the postman rob me of my birthright (say it like Christopher Walken) So I got my head together and went straight to Bert Layne. I didn't know if they could fix this Black Forest beast, but I wasn't going to let it roll around in the back of my ride anymore. I walked in to the smallish store and gently squeezed by some huge grandfather clocks, my uncomfortably large and damaged package just clearing the expensive merchandise. Hey- can you fix this? Hmmmmm. For a $25 diagnosis fee. But you can apply that to the repair cost, if you choose to have us fix it. Fair enough. Bert Layne and his staff were really professional, called me back within a couple days and let me know what was going on and what the damage was. They gave me an estimate of the cost and how long it would take. Fair enough. So in less than a week, I got the cuckoo clock back. Noisy, busy, but oddly charming. Fun fact time! In Greek mythology, the mighty Zeus turned himself into a cuckoo to seduce Hera. A pathetic quivering storm beaten cuckoo. Hera took pity on the washed out bird and let him into her room and into her heart. I'm kinda guessing that's what happened with my mom. The repair cost? Well let's just say it was worth it. Bert Layne has a sh*t ton of different cuckoos and grandfathers in his shop, and also sells and repairs watches. Cool stuff, good people. Brought in a watch needing a battery and a small and old (but meaningful) clock needing repair. The former was was fixed right away. As for the latter, they looked at it (from the outside and without opening the cover), said they weren't even sure there were parts for it, and that they couldn't fix it. I took the clock home and, after a relatively short time on the Internet, found parts and, with some modifications, was able to fix it myself. In short -- my view is that if you need something that is easy to fix, they probably do a good job, but if it's something that might be more difficult or take some time or ingenuity, don't take it to Layne's Clocks! read more

Too expensive. Replacing a plastic mechanism on a wall clock isn't brain surgery.

Given this is one of the only places to get my old German clock repaired I am kind of stuck getting it repaired here. The people are friendly enough and they do good work. The only down side is they are pricey and it takes 2-4 months in order to get my clock repaired. read more

Some four years ago I brought my beloved mantel clock into Bert Layne after having been refused service at another clock shop (they simply did not wish to work on the type of clock I had). The clock would not run, the pendulum operating for a short time, the winding mechanism stuck! The Layne clock shop took apart the inner workings, cleaned them and put the whole thing back together. We have moved from the dry environs of Tucson to a more humid climate. But now, after four years the clock still runs smoothly, and accurately- pretty good for a 48 year old clock. Great service. I took my mother's West German cuckoo clock from the 70s here to be repaired/restored. After two weeks waiting on an estimate for the job, I was told they couldn't repair it; they said it was made as a tourist item and not meant to be repaired. I understand and appreciated the honesty. The lady at the counter was very nice and friendly on both my visits about this clock. My only complaint was that the estimate took so long with no upfront notice. I wasn't in a hurry but it would have been helpful to know that process takes so long. However, if I ever need clock/watch repair again I will give them another try. read more

Wow these guys are honest! I went here for a repair and was greeted by a friendly staff member. If they wanted to, they could have ripped me off and I would never have known, but they were totally honest with me and told me what the issue might be and they didn't charge me. I was so impressed! very disappointed in customer service or lack thereof. I was charged a $25 estimate fee but when the estimate came back at $500 for a complete repair or a $45 partial repair, I opted for the partial. After a month, the repair still not performed and was advised that for smaller repairs it could take up to 6 months! Clearly they do not want to waste their time on small repairs but are happy to keep the $ 25 estimate fee. (which you must request it if you want to have it in writing) Would not recommend this establishment. read more

Affordable and fast watch battery replacement. Had my battery replaced for $10 in about 5 minutes. Everywhere else I called in town charged a lot more than that. The shop has some epic clocks, too. read more

Have a Ridgeway grandfather clock that belonged to my mother-in-law that is 23 years old. Before she passed I told her we would keep it and take care of it. After moving it to Tucson it needed some fine tuning with the striking and chiming mechanisms not working properly. After 2 trips by another clock repair shop in town that could not remedy the problems and told me I would have to have it re-built with new parts, I decided to call Layne's to get another opinion. Spoke with Nancy and she explained that it could very well need to be re-built but would have one of her technicians take a look first. Our technician was Duke, and after explaining to him what was going on he went to work. After about an hour he completely fixed both problems and our clock works like brand new! He couldn't believe the condition the other shop left the clock in and said the parts look just fine that they were probably good for another 23 years. Thank you Nancy and a big thank you to Duke! This clock store is pricey and we took back our Howard Miller clock shine they were charging $600.00 for changing springs etc. Took it home and it worked perfectly! Beware! All it needed was lubrication. read more
