I bought a Groupon for deep conditioning and styling. I made my appointment for March 17th, my birthday. When I came to this salon, I was so charmed by the look of this place. So adorable :) I was greeted by Tara, the owner. Such a pleasant person with a great positive vibe. There was some mix up with my appointment but she resolved that right away. I was offered nice cup of tea . The deep conditioning was great and the blowout done by Lyza ..... BEST BLOWOUT I have ever had done!!!!! I absolutely loved it!!! Layers salon was my hair salon before I moved out of Northern NJ. I started going there in 2015 after an awful haircut. Heather and Layers took the time to listen and sympathize with me. I had called a few other salons in the area for an appt first and their manner on the phone was rude, layers wasnt. They were kind and accommodating. Every time I went to layers salon, I felt like I was visiting friends. I even brought my toddler with me a few times and even though he was a little rambunctious, everyone welcomed him with open arms. When I first started getting my hair done at Layers, I had a bob, then eventually decided on a pixie cut. My desires for my hair were always heard and cuts executed amazingly. If you're unsure about this place, just go ahead and make an appointment already! I have never been disappointed with any service here. Lyza is the sweetest human I have come across. The whole staff is wonderful. This isn't just a job for them. It's more than slapping color onto your hair and trimming away your dead ends. They engage with you and treat you like a person rather than just another appointment. I haven't cut my hair for about 5 years and finally went in today to get one. Great salon! I made an appointment that I had to make earlier due to a schedule change and they were very accommodating. The stylist, Heather, even called me when they had a cancellation to see if I wanted to come in even earlier, which was very nice. When I came in, I was immediately greeted and asked if I wanted water or coffee. I'm usually very uncomfortable with small talk, but Heather asked questions that made me feel comfortable. I also straighten my hair a lot and she offered me tips on how to have healthier hair without making me feel bad (like other stylists at other salons have done in the past). Ah as someone that works in the service industry I don't like leaving a bad review and have tried calling the salon (promised a call back two days ago and no call) and messaged via Facebook with photos and again no reply. So I am left with little choice after a $250 hair colour and cut and spending $50 on products to make sure I'm doing what's recommended by the salon. I've recently moved here and looking for a new hairdresser. I called and booked and asked for a senior stylist and even checked at the end of the call 'it is with a senior stylist' and was told 'yes'. My appointment was with Natalie. A lovely young woman but after the event saw she is marked as a junior stylist on the website. I have naturally dark blonde hair that lightens in the summer. I had grown out highlights but the bottom lengths of my hair were still blonde and I requested a natural beachy blond highlights, to freshen up for the summer. A look I've had for many years and many hairdressers including when I lived in Bali managed to maintain it. So I get bleach highlights put in. I tell Natalie my hair takes quickly and she seems surprised that my hair lightens so quickly (as I said at the start). I the get shown some blonde and dark blonde toners and I ask for her opinion as the stylist as I'm not a colour specialist and she can see the bottom colour of my hair already and say that I trust your judgment. She says that she has her 'go to' colours for blondes and will do that. I trust I'm in expert hands. The colour comes out darker and warmer than expected, but it's hard to see with the salon lighting as it can look so different in natural light. Also my before photo in the salon looks very different than photos taken of my hair outside the same week.. I get home and look and it's just dark, flat, dingy and dull. I'm worried but wash and style my hair the next day hoping for the best. I Skype my mum and she says why does your hair look so dingy? My husband says he doesn't want to upset me but I don't look my normal blonde self and my friend comments it makes me look washed out. Now I'm panicking!!! I call the salon and ask so nicely to speak to Tara the owner as she is the most experienced and might be able to help get my blonde locks back in shape. Even if I need to pay again, but hope it would be free as it was clearly not beachy blonde highlights that matched my hair. I get promised a call back that day... not call back 2 days later. I send a nice message on FB with some pictures and no reply. So now I am left unhappy after paying for a service and no resolution or guidance or help to fix it. I've sent photos to my old hairdresser from back home who said it looks like to toner was not the correct choice and something went wrong. Where do I go from here? I will have to find another hairdresser to correct my hair now. Again Natalie was lovely, but clearly something went wrong, and no one seems willing to work with me and rectify this. Also sadly my cut (a minor thing) is at least half an inch shorter on one side, it will grow but the colour is upsetting. Not the end of the world but would expect more help from the salon after paying for a professional service. The mask photo is the week before my hair was done at the salon then the next one is the colour results. Also I've tried viewing my new colour indoor lights, outside, in a shop and it looks the same. Dingy, muddy and flat! Had several comments of what have you done with your hair and not in a flattering way!! Sadly it seems this is the end of the road with no help at all from Layers Salon, but my point of this review is hopefully someone else won't go through this experience. Financially but also for knocking your confidence as you are supposed to leave a salon feeling a million dollars! Mistakes happen but where is the salon to help fix it??! read more

I called Layers salon last Wednesday, literally distraught after my botched layers haircut @ Dasi Salon in Livingston. My hair, which is pin straight, medium thickness, Asian hair, will show every single cut, edge, trim that a stylist would do. @ Dasi, I asked for a lot of layers and I left with my hair literally split in 2 in terms of the top and bottom layers - there were no blending or any gradual gradation between my layers and I came out of Dasi with 2 distinct layers (top and bottom) on my head - so disappointing and so ugly. I went back to Dasi after communicating my annoyance and, you guessed it, the same stylist tried to fix it. How does it make any sense for a stylist, an advance designer (a step below the master designer), who messed up in the first place try to fix my hair when she did not see anything that was wrong with it?! I gave up. When I called Layers last Wednesday, Ame answered the phone. She was accommodating and she took me in that day. When I arrived, I was greeted by friendly staff and Ame told me that she was running late - much appreciated. During my haircut, I have NEVER met any stylist in America who would literally tell you step by step exactly what she is doing, why she is doing it, how it's good for you and who explains each and every step. I felt safe with Ame and MOST importantly, SHE LISTENS!! She listens to what you want but gives her opinion about what you want at the same time to give you OPTIONS! Despite Ame's update on what she is doing, there was never a pause or a long wait during my services - it was smooth sailing from beginning to end. Now keep in mind that I know that I'm not like most people. But I am the type of person who wants to know and appreciates when a stylist listens and tells and shows me what she is doing before and after she does them - Ame seemed to notice this and she wants me to feel comfortable. My hair now is AMAZING - with so many layers, blended and with gradual gradations everywhere! I wish I took a picture but the difference is NIGHT AND DAY! Unbelievable! Ame is clearly competent, experienced, accommodating and very nice! Although Layers salon is quite a schlep from Livingston (about 30 mins) it will certainly be my new place! I have been coming to Layers Salon since it first opened, and was going to Tara before she had opened the salon. I cannot speak highly enough of her and this salon. Recently I had a major hair emergency where I had taken a chance and went to a different salon to dye my hair brown and they had dyed it purple. I texted Tara saying "I'm having a hair emergency" and she responded within a minute saying "Come here as soon as possible if you can". I walked into the salon sobbing and both Tara and Heather came to comfort me and told me they can fix this. I cannot thank them enough for taking me in immediately to fix my hair. The loyalty and love that your receive when you come to this salon is unmatchable. They truly care about their clients and are willing to make anything work. Easy to get to location, plenty of parking, clean, comfortable and pleasant environment. Everyone working there is very nice and friendly, you feel right at home as soon as you walk through the door. Remember the movie Edward Scissorhands? He was a mad genius with scissors and so is Tara. I completely trust her to take my hair in her hands and do with it what she will. Her knowledge is vast and her creativity is fabulous. I never get in that hair rut here because each time I come, she makes that special little adjustment to my cut or color that makes it just a little more fun than the last time. I always have a blast here, we laugh and have a great time. The products she carries are totally cutting edge and I can't live without them. LOVE this salon!!! Layers and the staff are top notch. I have been a faithful follower of Tara and Heather since I first connected with them over four years ago. The salon has a great, non pretentious vibe but has all the characteristics of what one would expect at a high performing, professional establishment. I have had my hair colored the most perfect shades of blonde over the years. I am always contemplating a different shade/cut and the consultation that I receive from Tara has NEVER steered me in the wrong direction. I am a professional in a large accounting company and need to maintain a more conservative day look but the versatility that I have from the quality cut and color allow me to show the edgier side in my personal time. I was very disappointed in the service I received. I called and left numerous messages to get an appointment to fix what I initially paid for. I was given the run around and overall they never reached back out to fix this. I made it very clear what I expected and did not get and feel as if I was blown off. Not cool on their end not cool. This was very expensive to NOT BE HAPPY. I have never heard of a salon not willing to FIX their clients hair. The owner, Tara, has been cutting my hair for years (and with good reason). Although this salon is not as close for me as where she used to work, I continue to see Tara for everything because she is beyond talented and really excels at everything from highlights to updos to haircuts. I just can't stand salons who aren't upfront about pricing. I came into this salon for a 20% off balayage which was originally $120 discounted to $96. I asked for a product to be included in the process which helps with breakage (an extra $25). The stylist offered to quickly use a texturizing scissor throughout my hair to thin it out. (I have the same scissor at home) By the end of my appointment I was charged $225. I was told I was charged for a "haircut" when she took nothing off the length and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except run the texturizing scissor through my hair. She also told me she had to use extra coloring which I was NOT aware of. Shouldn't you be told about what you'll be charged for before the process is done? When I asked the employee why I was charged so much she couldn't give me an answer and when I asked what the stylist prices were she answered "they all have different prices". I don't mind dishing out money for my hair but when I feel like the business is trying to take advantage by tacking on prices without my knowledge is where I draw the line (bad business). She could have easily told me the prices and given me an option to say yes or no. Instead the salon will lose my business forever. Also hearing the f word used by the employees was not an added bonus to my experience. read more

Absolutely amazing. When I first went here I made an appointment not really knowing exactly what I wanted and Heather talked with me and looked at some pictures and knew exactly what to do. My hair was so healthy and it was the first time I had ever colored it and it came out amazing. She was a great stylist and super approachable. The salon was clean and friendly even to a new face. I, unfortunately, am "that client" haha I love my hair and I didn't want much of it cut off but I know I needed a trim because my hair was just too damaged. Ame not only listened to what I wanted but told me all the steps she was going to take to achieve it. She did some quick leave in treatment at the sink and then got to cutting.
