Finally tried Layered and now I understand the hype. I tried their Kyoto Latte (latte with condensed milk. The latte was a bit watery, but I can't wait to try their other drinks! And of course I had to try their fruit desserts! From Mango to Matcha Jasmine, everything tastes so fresh, delicious, and beautifully crafted. It's a busy spot but still gives that cozy cafe feel. Finding a seat is a challenge, but so worth it!

We've been waiting to try this place for the last year and man was it disappointing. This place is definitely over hyped. The pastries are cute but flavor isn't that great. It's just okay. We got the mango, vanilla, pistachio, yuzu & spinach pie. The spinach pie was the best thing we had unfortunately. Service was great though. The staff are really nice & helpful.

have heard a lot about this place so decided to give it a try since the hype has died down. I love the interior with options to work from super cute! I ordered the banana cream matcha which indeed tasted like banana. I didn't taste much of the matcha but it may due to how strong the banana cream flavor is. I personally would not get it again. I also got to try the cappuccino here and it was the standard capp nothing fancy or "wow" about it. Didn't get to try the dessert items so may need to come back & try it once. Service was friendly overall!

    Mango pastry so good!!

I finally got a chance to try layered and I really loved it. This cafe is large with plenty of seating but it does get super busy on weekends. They have so many drink options and I tried the banana matcha which was so delicious! All of their pastries are all handmade and they look pretty and so much like real fruit. Their pastries are basically art and that's why this place is a bit pricey. I think the price is worth what you get. All the pastries I tried were delicious but my absolute favorite was the mango.

The desserts here are better than you would think! They're beautiful and pretty tasty, but can be kind of expensive. I recommend the mango dessert! I've been here twice and tried the matcha jasmine dessert twice: one time it was bland but the second time it was really good. So maybe depending on the day, dessert quality can differ a bit. The drinks are decent, they have some fun flavors. I tried the matcha pandan drink and it was a touch sweet. Definitely worth coming here once! I'm curious about the different pastries they have as well. I've been here only on the weekend, and it's usually pretty busy. There's a lot of seating, but gets full pretty fast.

This bakery is such a fun concept! Their cakes resemble real fruit and are almost too pretty to eat. It broke my heart to break the cake. It's definitely a spot that catches your eye right away. Very instagrammable. The mango cake was my absolute favorite. The filling had real mango pieces, which made it taste incredibly fresh. It wasn't overly sweet at all, more of a balanced sweet-and-sour flavor that felt light and refreshing. We also tried the matcha strawberry cake. It was very light, perfect if you don't like heavy desserts. The matcha flavor wasn't super strong though, I personally would've loved a deeper matcha profile. Their coconut matcha drink was solid as well and paired nicely with the cakes. It can get busy depending on timing. We got lucky and waited about 10 minutes, which honestly wasn't bad. Service was quick and checkout was easy. The only downside is the price. The mango cake is quite small for $15...you're paying for the artistry and aesthetic as much as the taste.

I came here on a sunday afternoon and we got the strawberry pastry, ube cheesecake and strawberry matcha. My friend and I both thought that everything was ok but a little too sweet. I thought the strawberry pastry was a bit underwhelming in terms of taste as I thought it was would be an outer chocolate covering/shell with a refreshing cream but the cream was more reminiscent of almost a cream cheese flavor that I didn't really like and there was no hard shell. I liked the strawberry matcha the best out of everything we got but my friend said the drink was too sweet. Overall, I thought the cafe was ok ! The employees were friendly and the interior of the cafe is very cute with lots of seating. I think I would come back and just try their other pastries.

Go here! Don't even think twice just GO! I ordered a matcha strawberry shortcake latte, and it did not disappoint. Perfect balance of matcha and actual strawberry shortcake flavors. We also ordered Ube Cheesecake and a Mango pastry. Both were excellent. The mango was very refreshing and the ube cheesecake was not too heavy or overpowering. Vibe here is really relaxing, chill, and modern. Def worth the hype!

Phone eats first -- but I won't be back for seconds. I understand the hype. The aesthetics are alluring. I stopped in on Valentine's Day to surprise my guy with cheesecake and waited in a very long line. I'm not big on cheesecake myself, but he is -- and he was not impressed. The description does say "creamy," but this was unsettlingly creamy for a cheesecake connoisseur. I chose the strawberry cake. Again, it was a case of cream meeting strawberry compote... and the textures were very different. It just didn't come together for me. If you're looking for an Instagram-worthy dessert moment, this is your stop. The presentation is gorgeous. If you love ultra-creamy desserts, this is also your spot. Otherwise... say cheese, you gorgeous little treat.

This super trendy cafe has gone viral for their life like desserts. We got a couple different desserts and drinks to try. The desserts were very good, all not too sweet and were very unique. My personal favorite was the Match Jasmine cake that had a nice strawberry filling to pair with the match flavor. Drinks were just ok but I would definitely come back for the iconic desserts. I missed some of the more popular desserts like Mango and Strawberry so would definitely come back to try those! Desserts: San Sebastián Cheesecake, Lemon and Matcha Jasmine Drinks: Strawberry Matcha, Iced Latte and Iced Americano

Such a cool and aesthetic place! If this place was closer, I would definitely come here often to do some work. When you walk in, they have all the pretty desserts in the front and it was so hard to choose which one to try. They also had other pastries in a separate casing. I ended up getting the strawberry dessert and it was not too sweet and light tasting. I also ordered the banana bread matcha latte and this was delicious! This drink had a good balance of both flavors without being too sweet.

Came in n Easter weekend, Saturday, and they were packed. Service was friendly and the line went quick. Kudos to the man in the mask ensuring every customer was taken care of. The desserts are beautiful. The SO and I really enjoyed the Café Au Lait and Rocher were amazing. Not too sweet and plenty of different textures to keep us interested.

I came here days after the snow storm, so there was no line when I went around 4:30 pm yesterday. Got my mango and strawberry desserts quickly; though, my crème brûlée drink took a while to make due to orders before mine. Workers were friendly. The mango dessert had a hard shell that I cracked through with my fork. It tasted more like lilikoi inside - very tart. I tasted some mango too, but it really tasted more like lilikoi. I saw fruit chunks of what looked like mango but also fruit purée that looked and tasted like lilikoi, but I'm not certain due to this being a "mango" dessert. Still, it tasted great. I can handle that level of tartness. Presentation was very nice. Looked like a real mango. I thought the strawberry dessert would have the same texture until I took a closer look. It was softer in appearance. When I pierced it with my fork, I saw that the outside of the dessert was like firm cream. This dessert had a milder taste. It had some form of strawberry puree mixed with lots of cream. It was a hint too much cream for me, but it was good enough for me to finish. The stem (calyx) of the strawberry dessert was made of fondant, and the dessert was presented on a cookie. The cookie was stuck to the plate and fragile, so it easily crumbled as I tried to scrape it off the plate. It was almost like a Bischoff cookie. The crème brûlée was delicious. It came in a tiny cup. There was a lot of sugar at the bottom of the cup. I wasn't prepared for that. I didn't know these desserts were going to be $12-13 each. It seems a bit much. Overall, I had a good experience, but I don't think I'll come back for those prices.

Decent amount of seating both indoor and outdoor. Staff is friendly. I tried the dac biet (combo) with extra pickled vegetables. Pickled veg was super sweet/ needs a little more vinegar or something. Their combo says it comes with jambon, Vietnamese ham, and pork roll- I don't know which of these ingredients is head cheese but it definitely had head cheese. I don't like the gelatinous texture of head cheese so I asked for them to not put that on. It also comes with the usual Vietnamese mayo/pate, as well as a drizzle of some sort of chili sauce. The sauce didn't deter from taste. The bread was super hard and not in a good way. It softened after a quick nuke in the microwave. Overall, decent, I'd come back again, but not the best banh mi.

As of this review, Banh Mi Ong Beo has been in operation for 6-ish months. And while there are many positives about this place, operational kinks need to be smoothed out. Located in the University Mall across from George Mason, BMOB (should've arranged the letters to create the "BOMB" acroynm), is in a great location. I'm here often enough to catch a flick at the movie theatre or as in this instance, I was attending a conference at GMU. After the meeting, Yelp popped up this new banh mi place to check out. The interior is decorated tastefully and creates an inviting space to hang out. Counter seating and semi-uncomfortable backless chairs line the front windows, while the rest of the shop has more traditional tables and chairs, including a cozy couch area with an electric fireplace. Colorful lanterns and Viet style artwork also adorn the walls and ceilings. As is my penchant, I ordered the Dac Biet (or combo) as this is the benchmark by which any good banh mi place is measured by. The sando was ready in about 5 min, and I wanted to enjoy it fresh at the restaurant. On first inspection, I could feel it had good weight to it and it was filled with an appropriate portion of meats and veggies. While I thought the sammich was good, my tasting notes were: * Bread - Not sure if they bake bread on premises, but it didn't taste "fresh." The exterior was crunchy (correct) but the interior was too dry. But I get it; the place is still new so they don't want to order or bake too much bread to keep food waste down. * Pickled Veggies - One of the hallmarks of a banh mi sando, are the pickled carrots and daikon radish. IMHO, these were waaay too sweet. I liked that the vinegar flavor wasn't overpowering, but tamp down on the sugar. Also, I thought the veggies weren't drained properly so the bread got soggy when it was compressed. I would suggest using less liquid when storing the veggies on the prep table. Again, as this place gets busier, I don't see this being an issue. I didn't try any of the drinks, but did notice a few GMU students wandering in to get an order of the egg coffee and cafe su da. When judging a banh mi shop, the ultimate factor for me is whether the place prevents me from having to drive to either DC Banh Mi (my preferred destination) or Eden Center where there are a plethora of options. As of now, Banh Mi Ong Beo does not meet that criteria; especially at $9-$10 a sandwhich which is on the higher price point compared to other shops. But I'll check back in a few months to see if my opinion has changed.
