I come on this boat quite a few times a year, and it's pretty good. The mates are always friendly and helpful. The cost is about standard when compared to other trips, however when it does get crowded finding a place to sit down inside is hard. It's definitely a fun experience to get away from the city. Boarding was seamless and efficient. While the entire boat caught a single shark that's the way it goes. That said, the tickets should not say the boat was going out for Fluke then Stripers/Blues. The mate made it clear before we left the dock it would be blues all evening. I am certain there was a professional decision here to simply not bother with Fluke but then that should be communicated unequivocally. That was the only reason we decided to but tickets. A mate telling the customers "...they [the crew] are waiting to see who pukes first..." (the bay was a little choppy) as he later enjoyed some fishing while the two people to my left are trying to untangle their lines for AWHILE was something new but certainly provided fodder for conversation. Seeing the reviews are generally very good I'll chalk this up to just a single bad charter. I hope any future trip has more fishing luck and perhaps a touch more customer service, or at least not offensive banter, from a mate who, after all, is the face of the brand. read more

How things have changed. Went out on the Laura Lee 7/12/2025, 7pm trip. My friend booked the tickets for 4 online, we had a Laura Lee forever card and was unable to use it online. When I asked the gentlemen collecting for the pool about it and showed the card, he stated "what are you going to do with that". Tried to explain but he just moved on. He was great at filleting the fish while the other gentlemen butchered them causing quite a stir for one patron in particular as the others tried to avoid his service. The boats captain did not give a smooth ride going out, his speed was excessive and not enjoyable causing many passengers to get sick and a group did not fish. His approach to getting us in position was short sited and just did not take into account the people on board. I was fine, but not it was sad to see the lack of caring for the clients. On the way back the ride was smooth and enjoyable only accenting the earlier ride. We only went to one spot, he maneuvered around some, but the talk was he was just milking the boat for the all he can get and didn't care about the trip. This also showed when the staff were scrubbing down the boat on the way in and cramming the passengers inside and to the other parts of an already full boat. The hoses to clean were up and down the sides causing a couple of passengers to almost fall. It felt as if they wanted to go home as much as the passengers wanted to get off the boat. It was a site to behold and comical to say the least. We did hook some fish, a couple we were able to keep, but was surprised that our mate threw back our fish and during the filleting process saw many undersized fish kept on the other parts of the boat. The mates seemed inconsistent in their approach to what was accepted for the charter. As a long time visitor to Captree, you can see the demise in the crews, boat captains and the lack of caring for the clients. Instead of taking us fishing and making it enjoyable, they treated us like the fish and we were fillet. I made the best of it and me and my buddy just laughed as we watched them fillet each customer with precision. Would I go back if asked by friends, I would now have to give a long pause and thought before I said yes. Probably not and would just find another way to enjoy this once great asset on the Island. We understood the prices had to go up and gladly paid. We just could understand the uncaring approach to the customers. Just sad how the times have changed. read more

Hopped on the express for a fishing trip with my dad. Being able to book online prior and knowing what we were fishing for was great. The express is a bigger and fairly speedy boat, taking us about 50 mins each way into an ocean sweet spot. We spent our time pulling up small seabass, after fighting the porgies to get to them. I think we had about 5 drops, everyone was kept busy with the little fish. We had plenty of keepers, mostly porgies. Additionally, the mates were experienced and helpful. I don't have princess syndrome and bait my own hooks, try to take my own fish off and not cause trouble for mates. One of the soft-spoken, more experienced guys helped me figure out where to put my finger in the mouth to unhook the fish, showed me where not to put my hands, advised me not to use my rag on fish that are throw backs etc. I really appreciated him taking the time to show me instead of grabbing, unhooking and throwing the fish back. Meanwhile the guy next to me wasn't fan of even touching the fish... Speaking of, one guys kept hitting a vape stick with presumably hash oil. Yeah, it's legal and all but do I need to be smelling weed the entire trip? Ugh. Staff mentioned smoking only on the top deck when we boarded, but was not enforced. The express boat has a women's bathroom, I felt seen and appreciated because ladies like to fish too. Unfortunately the dudes were using it all day and they ran out of TP/wasn't cleaned. Oh well. Laura Lee is a solid charter for all types of fishers. Would like to go back for a trip focusing on more tasty fish. Ps: We saw bottle nose dolphins!! Surprising to see in NY in colder water! Awesome time on the Laura Lee! The staff are really nice and helpful and the boat is as clean as you can get a fishing boat to be. A bit too much drinking from the other customers on the boat for my liking but still the overall experience was fun. A few people caught some stripers to take home, a bunch of small sand sharks and one caught a massive striper that had to be thrown back but still so impressive to see. We were taken to several spots to try and catch something and there was an abundant amount of live eel for bait too. The staff tried their hardest to have everyone adhere to the covid restrictions of wearing masks or being six feet apart, which they did with the pole placements, but they didn't quite stick, especially when the alcohol kicked in for most, so it was kind of a mess in that sense. But will definitely go back once the weather warms up again. Maybe day fishing has more families and not so many drunks lol read more

We had a beautiful family fishing trip on the Laura Lee Express. It was a fantastic day for fishing and everyone on the boat caught Plenty of Fish. The Captain took us to a great spot for sea bass ,fluke and Ling and everyone had a great time even though some got seasick because we were way out in the Atlantic Ocean. Before the sun rose we are on the road to Captree Boat Basin for a half a day of fluke fishing. We chose the Laura Lee because of past good experiences. We were out for at least one hour before we started getting bites from crabs, small bass, sea robins and small fluke which were all caught & released. The legal size to keep a fluke is over 19" I believe. The crew on the boat was fabulous. They were always there to help with tangles, netting fish, cleaning fish, and baiting if necessary. I always like going to Captree to fish. This boat is one of the best. Every time I go out I leave the boat with sea bass or fluke or porgy. I know they use underwater radar but the captain knows where to go to catch fish. The crew is exceptional. They help the newbies and kids. Anyone that yell fish the crew come running and if they see the fish is a keeper the mate hustles and bring the net. They provide free bait. They have a dock pool and a boat pool for the biggest fish. Save a few dollars when you book your trip online. read more

My family and I take a fishing day trip once every summer and over the years we have favored the Laura Lee charter boat for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the boat leaves at 7 am on the dot, so you get a beautiful view of the sun and you're back by 11:30 ish so you still have a full day to do whatever else you may want to plan. It's not cheap to fish on this boat by any means but when you're catching fish left and right it makes it worth it. This year is the fourth year in a row we went on the Laura Lee and everyone who came on the boat with us caught tons of fish and multiple keepers. We go for sea bass and fluke and along the way catch lots of porgies, which are great for grilling. If you're bringing kids who have never fished before this is a great boat to come on because the staff is friendly and extremely helpful with tangled lines, helping you take the fish off the hook without hurting yourself, etc. It can be tough getting bait sometimes so you've just gotta speak up and ask for more when you need it. The crew members will run over with more bait as long as they know you need it. I'm not the biggest fan of the back of the boat solely because of the fumes, but some people love it back there. Usually those are the last spots to fill up so get there early if you're sensitive to the smell like me. Definitely bring a towel for fish guts and definitely wear crappy clothes. You're fishing! Also, none of the bathrooms had any soap the last time we went so bring a sleeve of wet ones or baby wipes for your hands because they get super slimy. I love hanging out on the top of the boat especially when we are first departing and then coming back to the dock at the end of the day. Its a great view from atop but just know people smoke freely all around the boat, which can be annoying it's part of the experience I try and tell myself. Highly recommend for a day of fishing where you actually catch fish, that's not always a given in my experience but it is on the Laura Lee. read more

I took friend and my family fishing on the Laura Lee ('blue'). It was a 1pm departure and it was a yucky day, heavy down pouring rain most of the morning but as soon as we arrived, around 12:20, the rain stopped. They first took us over to the fire island bridge and we all caught a lot. No keepers though but it made my kids very happy. A lot of small sea bass. We went more into the bay, caught more sea bass, some black fish, blue fish, a wheat fish (sea trout) and a porgie. The crew was AWESOME! Friendly, very helpful and informative. $43 for adults, $22 for kids and all of it was worth it! I recommend the Laura Lee to everyone! read more

Had a really bad experience with this charter company. Arrived 15 min before departure like instructed, boat was already PACKED shoulder to shoulder. The boat next to us (The Cap Tree Pride - highly recommend) was empty. One of the guys on the Laura Lee said that because they were so packed if we wanted a refund they would honor it. We agreed and decided to go on the Cap Tree Pride. Upon following up on the refund they said they never said they'd honor a refund and refused our money back. Our group never would have left the boat if they didn't offer us a refund. The people from the boat were incredibly nasty and unprofessional. Not only do I don't recommend them because of their poor customer service but their over crowding. Had we stayed on the boat we would have been tangled with everyone's lines. I highly recommend Captain Kenny and the Cap Tree Pride, they were EXCELLENT! read more

I won't ever go on this tub out of principle. Years ago I used to fish on Captree Pier. The Captain would deliberately sail on the inside of the marker buoys, as close to the Pier as possible to snag our lines and smirk as he passed. Once could be an accident but a few times? After the second time we pulled our lines in every time we saw him coming. We use braided line so in set-ups and tackle he cost me and my buddies quite a few bucks. read more

Fishing wasn't the greatest but captain certainly tried. Most of the mates were highly unprofessional and not helpful. Several staff were obnoxious towards customers and I was given an attitude when asking for a different jig (told what I had was fine and that I should listen as they are out there everyday). I just wanted to try something different and was scolded and talked nastily to during my request. When I first got on the boat another mate yelled at another customer (older gentleman) because he put two poles in the rod holders when he got there as he was organizing his stuff (yelling to him it's not your boat - get pole off or you leave). Trip was saved by the beautiful weather and nice patrons on board. Also we had one good mate who helped with caught fish (older gentleman). I emailed the captain with more detailed description of issues with mates and have not received a response, hence my review which could have been avoided. I fish often on charter/party boats. Celtic Quest, Osprey, Dixie and Lazybones all top class operations. The Laura Lee will likely not get my business again due to their poor customer service. Comment regarding company response. No striper blitz - 40 caught by 80 people and assistance was requested during move. read more

Went on a night fishing trip 11pm-3am for striped bass + bluefish ($55+$10tip). The staff were okay. They didn't seem too interested in helping beginners tips on how to cast and increase the chances of catching something. Several times, some late teenagers who seemed pretty "baked" had their hooks flying around because they were horrible at casting and even hooked someone's arm. The staff didn't seem concerned at all and just idly watched. In the end, the entire boat caught 3 fish over the 4 hour span. I don't know if this is just because it was a slow night, or if we were just taken to bad spots. Overall, almost everyone was complaining that it was a complete waste of money. I'd like to see the staff take more interest in making sure that people have a better experience, rather than just trying to fish themselves after 1/2 the people quit after 2 hours. read more

This is my favorite boat out of Captree. It sails 3x daily during the summer months. 7am-1230pm 1pm-530pm 6pm-10pm depending on tides They just got a new engine put in the boat and I cannot wait to see the speed added to this boat. That was the only problem with this boat. Not anymore. Boat is always clean inside and also bathrooms. 2 bathrooms for the ladies and the gentlemen. The captain and crew are great. Always willing to take care of everyone's needs. From setting up your rigs to taking the fish off the hook for you. They are always pleasant and friendly. I made many fishing buddies on this boat. Just don't forget to take care of the mates as they work mainly on tips. I think 20% is customary, just in case people did not know. They will also filet your fish for that tip also. So bring lunch, snack, and some beverages and enjoy a day out fishing. Maybe we will run into one another. read more

Make sure you go with your own bait. We went yesterday they had limited bait...told us to fish with lores...not one bite. Finally snagged a bunker (you had to run up the front of the boat in hopes to get one) only caught dogfish...first half of the trip we had no bait. We have gone on a TON of charters this was the first one with Laura lee NEVER AGAIN. No towels, no bait, everytime you left your pole it was either gone or the sinkers taking off it. Worst experience. Will stick with the ships we know from this point on. read more

I have been on many party boats in the tristate area and the Laura Lee is one of the best. Going on on these boats it's very common to encounter some very mean and downright condescending deck hands. I have been on the Laura Lee and The Laura Lee Express. The crew of both of these boats are super nice and just waiting to help you out. The crew is very understanding when you make mistakes such as birdsnesting, getting stuck in the rock, and even tangling with other anglers. Along with the amazing customer service we were constantly pulling fish up on both trips. it was so refreshing to know that there are charters out there that prioritize customer service to ensure their patrons not only have a good day on the water but actually get to fish and catch. i have already booked my next trip and can't wait for many more to come! read more

Communication is poor! Last night I purchased 5 tickets to fish in the ocean. When I arrived at the pier- was informed that we would stay in the bay to fish for stripes and blues. - due to weather. Had my reservations about it clearly expressed that. 50 people on the boat- not a single fish caught on my side. I called office to express my disappointment- I know it's fishing and no guarantee but I purchased thinking we were going into the ocean. They claimed they sent an email about change. I never received an email. The person then lied that I wrote the wrong email but clearly that was a lie because I received the confirmation of sale. Myself and two others went out on the Laura Lee Express on Friday, 11/29 for Seabass. There were a total of about 20 people on the boat. Before boarding the boat I asked one of the mates if we were going to get " beat up" out there because it was windy and the marine weather forecast called for rough seas. He said "no, we will be fine. ". I am an experienced fisherman having fished and boated on Long Island for over 50 years!! WELL LET ME TELL YOU, first off it took over 4 hours to get to the fishing grounds, YES 4 HOURS. I WAS ToLd WE WERE 50 miles offshore!!!! AND ROUGH, it was the roughest seas I ever experienced in my 50 years of fishing!!! The waves were practically breaking over the bow!! You couldn't even stand up without holding on to something. Plus the fact we were in 200 feet of water made reeling up your line tiresome and a chore!! We caught a fair amount of fish but it was totally unenjoyable and downright horrible! IT TOOK OVER 6 hours to get in, you heard right 6 DISGUSTING HOURS of bouncing around like a top and slamming into wave after wave! Plus what was supposed to be a 4a-4p trip turned into 4a-6:40p, 14 MISERABLE HOURS ON THAT BOAT!!! In my opinion the captain used poor judgement in going out that day, as he put the mighty $ in front of everyones enjoyment and safety!! Needless to say, NEVER EVER AGAIN! read more

Absolute trash of a fishing boat. First off I'd like to say I'm a pretty avid long island fisherman and the only reason I went on this boat was for my buddies birthday. What I saw on this boat was absolutely disgusting to me. The captain did not care what so ever if you caught fish or not he was not speaking on the intercom radio until the end of the trip when he said time to pack up and go home. He brought us to spots where we only caught undersized fish and the amount of undersized porgies they were letting everyone keep was absolutely shocking to me as someone who actually cares about preserving the ocean and the wildlife in it. And you can tell that they knew there we small fish in these areas by the size of the hooks they gave you to use. Was on the 8am 6/9 boat. There were less than 10 keeper fish and less than 15 total including throwbacks. On the fishing reports section of the boat website they said 96 fluke were caught. THis is a lie and flatout dishonest. They should not do this Update: Don't want to go tit for tat but the owner is standing by that 96 fluke were caught. I was there ,this is absolutely not true. A handful of keeper fish. 20 fluke or less including throwbacks . People still like to go fishing and you had a good crowd but be honest. The reality is that the fish are just not there, we can blame overfishing by trawlers whatever you like but please don't take your customer base for idiosts by claiming 96 fluke were caught. In short: Do it, it's a blast and you can bring home dinner. ----- On 20 June 2015 my dad, uncle, and I set out on an old tradition--fishing from a Captree-based charter boat for fluke and any other fun fish we could pull up. My childhood was right in front of me again...especially as I watch my father pull in a 30", 10.38 lbs fluke! OK, so the big fish made this fishing trip memorable for the ages, but the boat and crew made the trip fantastic for the day and would go back in a heartbeat. We fished the Laura Lee Express on an early morning trip and the staff was great, especially Kim who helped bring in the aforementioned monster as the fish popped the hook! Way to go, Kim! The seas were relatively rough (~4ft rollers) and I think that took a few by surprise when we went about 2.5 miles offshore, but those that stayed out of the cabin and didn't drink too much, :-), were saved from a sea-sickness. Oh, and don't forget to join both the boat and dock pools...ask my father, you just never know! read more
