We did a family fishing trip yesterday for my cousin's 50th birthday. There were 16 of us in total. We had 3-4 coolers filled with drinks, food, etc and the boat was able to accommodate all of it. The staff were great with showing how to place bait on the hooks. They were also helpful whenever our lines got tangled.The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because the fishing rods could be spaced out more so the lines don't get tangled as much. We booked this last-minute fishing charter on a Monday morning in August. HOT as the blazes, but a great trip, without all the weekend crowds, and with lots of help from the several different guys on-hand to help newbies and experienced fishers alike. We had originally wanted to take an ocean fishing trip vs. this one on the LI Sound, but they're really close to my mom's house in Huntington, so convenience won out over Captree and some of the more tempting South Shore/Ocean locations. And that being said, Long Island Sound is a GREAT spot for a fishing trip!! Super scenic, and the water's not nearly as choppy as what you'll find on the ocean. We boarded, paid (cash only!!), and got a quick lesson from one of the very helpful assistants, and then we were off!! Since it was a slooooow Monday, there weren't more than a 8-10 clients total, and we each got as much (or as little) attention as we needed. They provide the reel, a bucket of bait fish, and IF you catch anything big enough to keep, will filet it for you. The fish were not biting all that much, though we each got a few nibbles, along with some that were too small (or too weird... google sand robins, the weird "winged" fish we all caught and threw back!!) The Captain found several good spots, where we stopped and tried our luck. We generally stayed about 20 minutes or so in each spot, moving on when the fish stopped biting. We did catch several porgies which were keepers (have to be at least 19" long, or back they go!!) and they were fileted for us at the end of the trip. All in all, a good trip, just as advertised. My ONLY minor complaint is that near the end of the trip, they stopped for a half hour or more right near the shoreline of a beach (Eaton's Neck?) and to me, it just felt like an end of trip "time waster," as no one had even a nibble there... I'd recommend taking this charter if you're in the area. Beats a day at work any day!! :-) read more

A pool on the boat for the largest fish that's in season and let the fun begin! They bring you right to the fish and supply all of the poles and bait you'll need. In a little over two hours our party of four was able to fill nearly to the top a five gallon bucket. We ate like kings and queens that night. Bonus: The very knowledgeable and friendly deck hands will clean your fish for free. But after seeing how beautifully they clean your fish, you better tip them extra well. James Joseph is one of the few charter boats in the (North shore) Huntington area. It was PACKED like a sardine can on a Sunday afternoon. Before, during and after... all three day trips. Be ready to be elbow to elbow with fellow fishermen (and fisher ladies). The staff on the boat was competent and prompt, always ready to help you pull up a fish or untangle your hooks when you were catching other humans instead of fish. The Captain of the boat was exceedingly nice and let us come up stairs and play with their sweet black lab puppy. He was kept up in the cabin most of the time but gosh, was he adorable. Everyone was gushing over him (how could you not?). Expect to be pulling up fluke, sea robins, the occasional crab and each other's lines. My only real complaint about the trip is that we sat in certain spots for a long duration of time when no one was pulling anything up at all. On some of the other boats I've been on they'll scurry around a bit more. Oh, well. Cost is on par with other party boats ($40) and they wont bat an eye if you choose to sip some adult beverages while you're catching your dinner (or trying to)... read more

I went out yesterday on the smaller James Joseph boat with my nieces and nephews (ages 7-14) and we all had the absolute BEST time. Captain James and his mate Scott were incredibly friendly, kind, supportive, encouraging, and informative. They answered all of our questions and helped us catch quite a few blue fish and striped bass. The children had so much fun reeling in the fish, with the support of James and Scott, who also gave them their independence as everyone acclimated. Captain James was flexible with scheduling when weather became an issue and he answered all my questions prior to booking to ensure my family felt comfortable having the children out on the boat. First time fishing in northshore yesterday. Have to say, one of my best experience with blackfish party boat. Crew was funny and super helpful. The captain definitely knows what's he's doing. None stop action all day long. Caught ton of 14 and 15 incher. Pool winner was easily 10+lb. few of those bad boys were on board. Great experience overall. Parking was super easy. UYE: Landlubbers Unite on the James Joseph II - Huntington New York. Our fellow yelper, Marissa, painstakingly planned this unofficial event on 20 July 14. Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a yelpy trip,that started from this local port,aboard this tiny ship. The planner was a mighty yelping gal, the CM brave and sure, 10 yelpersons set sail that day for a four hour tour, a four hour tour. The weather started getting rough,the yelpers 'cookies' were tossed, If not for the kindness of the fearless team, the event would be lost. The event would be lost. So this is the tale of our yelpaways, they fished for a long, long time. They had to make the best of things, it was an uphill climb. No fluke, no bass, just sea robins, not a single keeper for me, Thank G-d I have my YELP app, A Fish Market is down the street! So poles down mates, it's getting late! The crew is a helpful lot. What a great boat! I went out this past weekend and had a great time! The crew and captain really put us on the fish. It was rough out but worth it. Would give zero stars if that was an option. Four of us went to go on your boat. When we arrived at the dock the boat was already crowded. We stood at the ramp deciding what to do and we were ridiculed over the PA system by the captain. He claimed there were only 36 people on the boat so we decided to board and give it a go. We walked on the boat and looked for a spot and realized that there were too many people for our liking and that we would not be able to have a good time (there was no place to sit inside or out). We decided to leave and once again the captain thought it was necessary to mock us for not going. It is not about social distancing, or COVID, it is about our personal enjoyment as we are not avid fisherman. We did not dissuade other passengers from going and there was no need for the captain to make the remarks and comments he did. EPIC FAIL FOR ME! read more

Two friends and I boarded the boat at 5:45am for a 7am trip and it was already crowded. More people arrived and boarded to the point where spacing became uncomfortable and possibly against COVID regulations. We decided to leave and try Captree instead. We met the guys that operate this boat while docked in Huntington. We had our own boat. I was impressed, and would go out with them in a heartbeat- they were telling us stories about past trips, and expressed how their top priority is safety, fun, and being fair to everyone. They were super friendly, and gave us tips on our own boat, which was having issues at the time, and actually helped us to repair it quick. I feel confident when I say, they know what they're doing - take a trip with them !!! And, enjoy !!! Very knowledgable, and absolutely best in the area. My BF has been fishing for years, and was impressed with what they were telling us .... Oh, and if you like dogs, they have the cutest 1 year old black lab. Great guys ! read more

I am giving it 3 stars but should be 2 and a half. If Captain James is the pilot you are pretty much guaranteed a good day. If Joe is the pilot you might as well sit down, have a beer and a sandwich because it is apparent he either doesnt know the spots or doesnt care ( which by the way was conveyed to me by one of the mates). I would not recommend. We went on a 4 hour porgy charter. To put it simply the captain put in zero effort to put us on the fish. We made three stops all 2 in the harbor 1 in the bay. There were maybe 20 porgies out of the 60 fares on the boat. In fact we stayed in one spot for 1.5 hours and nobody was catching. The captain was probably napping. Save your money. Find a different boat with a captain that actually cares to find the fish. read more

We drove from 2 hours away to take my father (who lives in Huntington) and his grandkids out fishing for his birthday. We reserved the half day private charter - not the "party" boat. The entire experience was painful and horrible from beginning to end. We reserved the trip many weeks in advance, yet I come to find out (only because I called to confirm) that he actually had a customer that day/time and he would not honor our reservation. Uggh... really disappointing. We then picked another time and confirmed again. He never asked how many people we had nor did he inform us there was any rules. He just took the reservation over the phone - there is no real process, clearly a poorly run business. Two days prior to the trip I called to confirm. On that call, I just so happened to tell him how many people we were, because I was concerned about life preservers for the kids. Great time to tell me there was an issue with this if there was. But nope, nothing. The day comes to go out fishing, we are waiting at the dock and maybe the most horrible fishing boat I have ever seen pulled up. I mean actual junk. It couldn't be. But, yes this shipwreck was our boat. Boy did we feel bait and switched ( no pun intended). It looked like a small commercial fishing boating that was 20 years past its decommissioning. There was no place to sit, literally zero, not even a bench or folding chair. It appeared to be in terrible condition. If this wasn't all bad enough yet...wait for it - he refused to take us out!!! He claims he cant take more then 6. Makes up a story that he told me this previously and then further denies me ever telling him we were 6 plus a baby. He begins screaming, ranting, raving and name calling, even accusing me of lying - all with 3 kids under 6 standing there and my 70 year old father on his birthday. We were all horrified. He then offers some scam to get around his insurance if we want to go anyway. This whole drama with him starts getting super fishy ( this pun I intended). We declined to get caught up in that type of disreputable activity. We were given no choice but to leave the docks and go back home. I mentioned to him I was going to leave an honest and thorough review about this experience. He then told one of his mates to follow me to my minivan full of little kids and write down my license plate. I don't know what you think, but that sounded like intimidation to me. Needless to say, this was a horrible, no good, very bad day. The kids were now scared and disappointed, crying the whole way back and James Joseph ruined my fathers 70th birthday as well. I would stay very, very far away from this company and especially from James. read more

And a great time was had by all! My son and I took the 4:30 boat mid week, the boat was about 60 percent full we had plenty of room on the rail. It was a beautiful evening with an exceptional sunset. We were going for Bluefish and did very well. We hit a large school and had non stop action, the fish were in the 6-14lb range my son and I landed 8 fish. We lost 4or 5, the action was non stop. The crew was excellent! They really enjoy what they do and were very helpful. My son and I fish frequently and the crew adjusted their answers to match the knowledge of the fishermen. I really can't stress the helpfulness of the staff. On the return the fish were cleaned and bagged the only thing left for you to do is cook them and they offered tips on that! They earned their tips and I gladly tipped more than usual. I highly recommend a trip on the Captain Joseph read more

These guys blew up our entire trip, stay away! They never asked how many people we had. Despite that, when i called to confirm our month old reservation, two days prior - I told James we had 7 people. We got to the boat on the morning of the trip, with three kids under 6 and my dad, for his 70th birthday present. They refused to take us out! Said they cant take more then 6 people. James then proceeded to scream, yell, and curse at me like an animal while my father and three small kids listened on. He then offered me some scam to get around his insurance, where he will take us out for free and then we pay him when we get back to shore. Obviously, I wouldn't do something so dishonest and disreputable. When we said no and left, I told James I was going to leave a very honest review of my experiences with him. He warned me not to and then James had one of his workers follow me and my family to our mini van and write down our license plate number. Sounds like a threat to me.
