Superb summer camp experience. My 16 yr old son spent two weeks there in 2022 and loved it!

My daughter went on Sail Caribbean for the third time this year. She loved it the first year, the second year she enjoyed herself but not enough to go on the following year. This year she went againn. She was loving it, she loves to scuba dive and sail. After one week I received a call from Mike that he was sending my daughter and a group of other kids home for having their cell phones. He also sent others home for drugs and Juuling. We had no idea that having a cell phone could send our daughter home, it was not in the contract. They actually talk about how the kids contact you while at camp, via their cell phones at certain times. So clearly, everyone brings them. When we did not comply with brining our daughter home immediately Mike decided to make her as uncomfortable as possible, leaving her and the other cell phone users outside on a concrete floor or wooden bench for the day. It ended when she contacted me and told me she was being eaten alive by mosquitos. I called Mike and told him that he had to let her inside. He got off of the phone with me and berated her for contacting me, keep in mind he had given her phone back to her. We actually have recordings of him yelling at her. He kicked out at least 3-4 kids so far for cell phones, one for using drugs, one for Juuling and one for not doing chores. There are much better choices out there for your teenager. Kids should not be sent home for having a cell phone, keep in mind, its at our expense. read more

Stay away at all costs. I had a horrible experience at SC. The camp was full of obnoxious, spoiled rich kids from around the Tri State and beyond. The promo video is very misleading. It was a miserable experience living on that boat with other kids in cramped quarters. I recall feeling an overwhelming sense of joy and relief when I finally was able to leave. I'm a SC alum from the 90s. I can offer, perhaps, a more parental/adult view, while at the same time speaking from a "camper's" experience. BASIC INFO My younger sibling & I both did a 3-week SC (separately, different yrs). I went with 2 classmates from my hs; younger sibling went alone. There were about 8 kids per sailboat (I believe 50-ft bareboat monohull), 2 kids per cabin, & each cabin has its own head (bathroom). These were decently updated boats, but don't expect a luxe yacht for a bunch of teenagers. No air-conditioning, but we were allowed to sleep on deck with a breeze. You moor or anchor at night & there were not many bugs off shore. We got a real shower only a couple of times; it was mostly soaping up in your swimsuit & jumping off the boat to rinse (in salt water, yes). We were not required to wear life jackets while sailing. Yes, you cook your own meals but not every meal; you assign groups & take turns. Some cook, some clean, some have other chores. This is called self-sufficiency, & learning to grow up. There was plenty of food, & meals were standard American dishes. Was it the grade of food I've had as an adult on staffed charters? No. Was it healthier than an all-inclusive resort? Yes. Was it fair & reasonable for kids? Yes. CURRICULUM When I went, there were optional add-ons, meaning for added fees, you could do extra activities during down time. I chose the Marine Bio class, which included a very cool night snorkel to see glowing sea life. I also did a beginner 50ft scuba dive. For free, they offered the "Master's" course, which was more in-depth sailing info to study, & be quizzed on by your skipper. You could also get "dinghy certification" which allowed you to drive the dinghy, normally only permitted to the skipper. No, you could not head off in the dinghy anywhere you wanted; it was by permission only, & permission was not granted to visit friends on another boat. They were very strict about no alcohol/drugs. They woke us up early, & kept us very busy all day, so by evening we were too tired to try to get up to no good. Honestly, most of the kids there, even the most badass ones, were the type to behave when rules were enforced. No one tried to leave the boat at night, nor get into trouble when we had freedom on the islands. TOURISM SC introduced me to a LOT of neat places in the Carrib. I have gone back to take my husband to Anegada for the fried lima beans; to the Baths for snorkeling; to stay at Bitter End YC with the outdoor movies; & even bumped into Foxy at a B+B in the USVIs. All of these experiences originated from SC. HOMESICK? Many of the other kids at SC were familiar with the Carib. I had traveled to the Carib on family vacations many times before attending. This helped me feel familiar & comfortable in the environment, & insulated me from culture shock. I certainly don't mean to say that the Carib has vast & exotic cultural differences, just that kids of all ages get homesick, & any cultural/climate/familiarity differences can affect them. One of my classmates had not been to the Carib, & experienced a bout of culture shock, but it passed fairly quickly. I too had some homesickness, but it was more due to some unfriendly boatmates. It too, passed. OTHER KIDS/SKIPPERS There was definitely a lot of diversity among the kids in my fleet. Ages ranged from 14 to 17. Kids from all over the US. Also, international kids from Europe, S. America, & the Carrib. Everyone spoke English. As always with teens, a "cool" group develops, but is a lot more fluid on temp travel than the "permanence" of back home. While the majority of kids were from well-educated & privileged backgrounds, taught to be socially responsible & modest, it was the pretentious bourgeois kids from Manhattan/Fairfield Co/Westchester Co, who ran the show. My boat had half of each type. This is where your experience can change according to your skipper; ours was a cool-guy himself, & favored the loud'n'flashy. The bougies made a show of being snobby about food, picking on people, monopolizing group discussions, dodging chores, etc. They even made fun of the skipper (who entitled them), behind his back. Sadly, my experience would have been MUCH improved by a non-DB skipper. My younger sibling had a skipper who did not tolerate brattiness, & it was a much better experience. (BTW, I have family from Fairfield Co/Westchester Co, so I am not biased against them; I am calling the type for what it is.) REFLECTION Overall, I found it to be a great experience for my personal development; it incorporated travel, teen independence, hands-on skill building, & nautical education. At the time, my friends at home were doing nothing special, getting no stimulation, & wasting their summer. SC introduced me to a world of independence I would not have known otherwise. I am very grateful for that. SC inspired me to branch out to other summer programs; the following summer an exchange in France, then Spain. read more

I don't think I could ever express how wonderful I think this company is and what they do. My daughter has wanted to be a marine biologist since she was little. We found Sail Caribbean by accident this past summer. We were fortunate enough to find her a seat on one of the boats which worked with our crazy schedules. From the beginning, they were extremely professional and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. After all, we are sending our 15 year old daughter out of the country for the first time without us. We travel as much as we can, always as a family. This opportunity was one we couldn't pass up and did everything in our power to make sure she could go. We were surpassed with the experience she had. Saying goodbye was the hard part but to hear her voice and the excitement and the adventures she was having was amazing. She loved the ocean even more and came back more dedicated to saving it and the creatures who call it home. She is more confident and learned going out of her comfort zone is okay. Sail Caribbean - Boating Near Me - Northport, New York

I sailed with Mike the summer of 1973, during the formative years of "Sail Carribbean" in the British Virgin Islands, Necker Island. It was and still is a high point of my lifetime, and I still have vivid memories of that summer. Not only did I complete the three week trip, I stayed another five weeks, for a total of 8, since I was so deeply immersed in the Island Camp and Sailing adventure program. I would like to say that I was 17, not 13-16 years old like some of the kids of this Yelp sites other reviewers, so came to the program with more maturity. Yes, portions of the trip were tough, yes there were mosquitoes at times if you stayed out too late or didn't prepare adequate cover, but we adapted and solved those unique and exciting experiences. I matured so much in so many ways over the course of that summer that everyone I came in contact with upon my return commented, astounded. I urge the parents considering this program for their kids to ask more questions before signing them up. This was and can be a peak experience for them! If you want a cheap boot camp for your child, then this might be for you. If you want you child to experience the camp and all the activities on the website, then save your money.Not as described, 3 persons to one twin or sleep on deck on a sleeping back with all the mosquito's , no fresh water, the kids are required to drink water from a holding tank, my son had to return early from bacteria and dehydration. I am so sorry I did this to my son. BEWARE!!! Not as described! Poor care for your children and less than adequate medical care. They would not refund unused days or pre-paid dives and activities. Sent him home sick. They do not feed the kids as per the brochure. I thought this would be the time of his life, but it is a nightmare. read more

I am very surprised by the negative reviews. My daughter just turned 17 and is going back for a 3rd summer to Sail Caribbean. Every summer she has gone by herself and has come back with new experiences, new friends, and new skills and certifications. The first summer she came back a changed person - confident, independent, and very happy. The second summer she got her rescue diver and master diver certifications, basically conquering and achieving every goal she had for herself in the sport of SCUBA. This summer she is focusing on sailing. Going back year after year has been her choice, and she obviously loves it. Here are some replies directly to the criticisms. Also be sure to look at all the reviews, not just the ones that are featured: Staff - The captains, mates, and supply people were terrific. She enjoyed their leadership and friendship. From a parent perspective the support and office staff communicated extremely well answering all my questions. Food - It was a great experience for the teens to learn to be self sufficient and responsible for their surroundings. The negative reviewers called it a disappointing "vacation" and "charter"; it's not meant to be a vacation or a charter- it's a camp where you are learning life skills and responsibility and maturity, though it happens to be in a beautiful vacation-like setting. My daughter said the food was not gourmet, but tasted good and some days were better than others. It was a source of teamwork and laughter to see what their fellow boat mates came up with when it was their turn to cook. And she never went hungry. Sleeping - what a fabulous and unique experience to live on a boat for 3 weeks. It's not meant to be a hotel or a luxury charter. It's the real deal, and part of the allure and overall SC experience of of living in, under, and on the water. They mostly slept on deck, there were no bugs out on the moorings, they could also sleep in the galley or really anywhere. Sleeping was never a problem and was part of the fun. Showering - yes you wash in the ocean, but you are able to get a fresh water rinse when you're done. Again, this is real boat life - there are not endless supplies of fresh water when you live on a boat. They had a few land based showers over the 3 weeks which were welcomed and reminded them to appreciate water as a resource. The kids - Most kids came from the east coast of the US, but there were kids from all over the US and several from Europe and S America. The boats are divided by age group, which works well. However, depending on the program, they do activities and courses with kids from other boats. Very few came with friends, most came solo and made lots of new friends. If you have any further questions or concerns - ask the staff to put you in touch with recent attendees. This is a great camp that will change your child's life for the better. read more

My son did Sail Caribbean last summer. He had an amazing time. He got his Advanced PADI and could not stop talking about all the awesome dives they did. He went without knowing a single person and it was not a problem. He loved the staff and made friends that he still keeps in touch with. My son had been to summer camp many times and did not at all mind sleeping on deck with his friends. I had read a few complaints about the accommodations, but maybe those people were expecting the Ritz. This is a camp-like program, not a luxury yacht. For my son, it was really not that different from camp. From my perspective, I found the staff professional and responsive. Putting my son on a plane by himself to the Virgin Islands and not knowing the person at the other end required significant trust. The Sail Caribbean staff did not disappoint. read more

Our daughter attended Sail Caribbean the summer of 2015 and had the time of her life. She made great friends and generally had a blast. She was already fairly independent but became even more so. She was enriched by the sailing and diving aspects of the program, accomplishing much more than we might have hoped, gaining knowledge, skills and certifications. While she was there we received daily photos and reports from the team at Sail Caribbean so we could follow where they were and what they were up to. Fun and also made us more relaxed. The camp is very professionally run, yet warm and friendly - we were very impressed with every aspect of the program, from organization to execution to customer service, all was done with professionalism and heart...the result was as promised! read more

My daughter has been going back to this program year after year - in fact, this is her 5th year of attending Sail Caribbean. That should speak for itself! An amazing adventure sailing camp for teens! Through the 5 years of attending Sail Caribbean, my daughter has gained approximately 40 hours of community service, learned about the conservation and protection of our fragile coral reefs, participated in sea turtle, as well as invasive species studies, obtained her Rescue Diver certification (plus numerous other diving certifications) through Sail Caribbean Divers, etc., etc., etc. Not to mention some of the intangibles: working as a team, leadership, decision making, life skills, ... The front office people have been incredible through the years. Mike Liese and Jackie have been incredible and most patient in answering my many questions and working with me on payment plans to suit our needs. They are knowledgeable, patient and flexible. I was really interested in sailing and wanted to try it out in an environment that would be great for learning and great for having fun. When I found Sail Caribbean (SC), it was perfect. It was everything that was necessary and more. I spent two weeks on their Alpha program which is two weeks in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). It was really great. I went from knowing very little about sailing to being able to adjust the sails according to the wind. One thing that is really neat is that the students are doing all of the work. The staff is there merely for teaching and safety. Although they are really great sailors capable of any situation, they are rarely ever the ones at the helm or on the lines (or scrubbing the decks). It is always the campers. SC has a plentitude of different programs from Alpha to Foxtrot (also Tango and Ocean). Each program specializes in a certain skill but still includes a bit of all of the others (Alpha and Bravo focuses equally on everything). Some of the skills focus on advanced sailing, scuba diving (highly recommend trying) marine biology and community service. Some of these courses are not just for teens, they are for college students as well. You can also get scuba diving certifications as well as sailing certifications (like ASA Keelboat Certification). Each boat is separated by age group so you will be sailing with people your age. For people with food allergies, I have a gluten intolerance (Celiac Sprue) and they were able to accommodate fairly well. There were spots that they could have improved on (there was a peanut allergy on the boat as well so that limited food choice a bit more) but overall I was never hungry and always has something to eat. Do not let having a food allergy stop you from signing up. Overall, really great experience. I give it five stars because it is a truly life changing experience that will give you memories and friendships that will last forever. read more

Our son participated in Sail Caribbean during three different Summers. He loved it! He received a wide variety scuba diving certificates, made lifelong friends, became self-reliant and matured tremendously. Mike and the staff are great. At one point our son had a panic attack or he was seasick - I'm still unsure exactly what he was feeling. He's actually unsure too. But at any rate they got him off the boat, had him assessed, insisted that he remain overnight on shore in a trusted administrator's room for observation and let him go back to the boat the next day when the crisis had passed. We are very appreciative to Mike and his staff for helping our son to sail, scuba, mature, and to love the beauty of the Caribbean. read more

I went on this trip in 2013 when I was a senior in high school, I realized I have not posted a review since the vacation and would like to now. This trip has the capability to be a great trip but the staff and the misinformation on the website turned it into a nightmare. First thing I was disappointed in was the fact if your on the sailboat you wear a life jacket never seen them in any pictures/commercials when I watched them. You sleep no ac 3 to a single bunk on the boat or choose the top deck if you have a hammock but usually spots taken. No fresh water except what you drink out of the holding tank (terrible water). The food is prepared by the kids and is not as described after the first couple days. Staff on my boat was great I was lucky but staff on other boats honestly made me feel bad for other students for how they acted, I saw an argument with a crew almost turn into a fight with a student on a nature walk. You take your shower In the ocean every night that's kinda a bummer for me. I signed up for 4 weeks or 2 trips of sailing as I love the ocean and wanted to explore all the Virgin Islands but ended coming home in 2 due to an infection and dehydration. The trip is almost to good to be true but I went back at 20 on another catamaran trip and had the time of my life so it is possible to find a good sailing charter! You pay a lot of money for a strict summer camp on the ocean for your child, don't do that to them. read more

This was my daughter's 3rd summer at Sail Caribbean and she is making plans to return next year as well. She has made lifelong friends of all ages with whom she keeps in touch with throughout the year. She is in her element scuba diving at Sail Caribbean and we have been blessed to watch her grow each year. Respectfully, I'd like to address some of the concerns expressed by the other reviews. 1. It is a "hands on" sailing camp. The kids live on a sailboat (with staff) and take turns with all day to day activities including learning how to sail, chart courses, navigate, cook, clean up after themselves, etc. Living on a sailboat requires everyone to make an effort and get along. This new independence and responsibility can be an adjustment for some kids. A positive attitude can go a long way. 2. Sailboats, by nature of being boats, carry fresh water in a fresh water holding tank. The kids have access to land showers every few days. Otherwise, they are in the clear Caribbean water everyday. Also, a berth on a boat is smaller than most kids' bedrooms at home so it may seem cramped at first. However, there is ample room to sleep throughout the boat although my daughter preferred to sleep in her hammock on deck under the stars. 3. Bugs. Life on a sailboat is like camping on the water. While mosquitoes are not an issue most of the time, when docked at certain islands there can be bugs. That's what the bug repellent is for :+) 4. Safety is one of the most important aspects of this camp. (I confess I am one of those "over the top protective" type moms). If you look at any of the photos on the website, including trip update blogs, you will see how strict they are with use of life vests (any time sailing). Sail Caribbean has it's own fleet of dive boats and PADI certified instructors that meet the sailboats. Again, dive safety is the first priority. Also in regards to air travel, you have all of the contact numbers including who is meeting your child at the airport. At the end of camp, they make sure your child is on the correct flight home. Parents have all of the staff telephone numbers - call the staff if there is an issue. 5. Feeling alone/homesick. There is a "no cell phone/technology" policy at Sail Caribbean for the campers (Thank goodness!!!). Not being able to text your friends 24/7 or check twitter can be hard for this generation - especially if it is a child's first real time away from home. It means that they have to interact face to face with new people and some children might tend to be quiet/shy. But there are plenty of opportunities to interact and build new friendships (that can lead to massive group texts when back home). After the first day or two, they adjust. This personal growth will easier for some and can vary by age. Sail Caribbean does a great job keeping boats organized by similar ages but mixing up the kids throughout different activities. Bottom line, every child is different and only a parent truly can decide what is the right fit for their family. However, if your child is adventurous, open to new challenges and meeting new people, loves the water and being outdoors, then Sail Caribbean can be a wonderful opportunity for them. My recommendation is to look at the website and check out the "trip updates." These photos and "diaries" are posted throughout the trip so that we parents can see the smiles on our kid's faces and get a glimpse inside their day. read more

I was surprised by the negative reviews below, as my son went for a two-week trip at age 13 and had an incredible time. He liked all of the counselors on the 3 boats and met kids from all over the country with whom he connected well and became close. He LIKED sleeping on the deck with the other kids--that was not seen as a negative. He had no complaints about the food, and he typically is a picky eater. He discovered quickly that he did not like scuba diving and the counselors quickly got him integrated with the other kids who were not diving. He would have liked a bit more sailing, but his overall takeaway was very positive. From my end, I found the Sail Caribbean staff accessible, friendly, and super helpful when I had questions or concerns. read more

Our son was 14 years old the first time he went on a Sail Caribbean trip. It was a two-week program at the end of the summer, after summer baseball was over and he was left with nothing to do until school started. We had to really persuade him to go. Even though he had been to the Virgin Islands before and loved being on a boat, the idea of living on a boat on his own, far away for two weeks, was daunting (for us too!) He finally agreed to go but was very apprehensive. Of course, he ended up having the greatest time. Yes, all of his laundry smelled and they took showers in the ocean, but he didn't care - he loved it. They are living on a sail boat - it's not a luxury cruiser - but, hey a 58' catamaran is no slouch either! These are teenagers, learning about life, independence, relationships, responsibility and yes, roughing it a little bit. It's good for them - it's been wonderful for our son. Every year, he comes back from his trip a little more independent, a little more confident and a little more responsible (a lot more tan! :)) Amazing what those few short weeks accomplish! He loves the sailing, the friendships he's made and the marine science activities. The first thing he tells us every time he gets back is that he "definitely wants to go back next year." From the kid who we had to convince the first time. The experience has made such an impression on our son that he wrote about it in his college essay. My personal experience with the staff and crew members at Sail have been great. They are all very knowledgeable, helpful and responsive. Safety is a priority and the kids learn how to be safe on a boat and to respect the sea. The programs are well thought out and the staff makes sure they're fun. Our son still keeps in touch with some of the crew/staff from his trips as well as some of the kids. After three years of trips, it's like they are family. He can't wait to go back this year - for 3 weeks! I can't say enough good things about this program. read more

Both my sons, ages 14 and 11, and their friend from China, had a fabulous time on Sail Caribbean last summer. They wanted to go to have a great time--I wanted them to go so that they could learn to live on their own in a safe and managed environment, learn some life skills while they were having so much fun they didn't notice that they were scrubbing the bathroom, and so they would meet other kids with similar interests and diverse (yet comparable) backgrounds. Well, they had a great time and I got what I hoped for! Both my sons came back empowered by the experience--the older one earned his first SCUBA certification and the younger one sailed a Hobie for the first time--and well, it blew the Chinese boy out of the water! He learned so much about why the ocean is precious and how to have fun, not just study! It was a little harder for him, since he came from such a pampered environment, but even he learned to make it all work. Everyone is still in touch with their new friends from the program (and some of the counselors) on Instagram, etc. And the Sail Caribbean team--from the president to the admin experts--were FABULOUS, reassuring and careful from start to finish. Issues? My older son set the kitchen on fire (briefly) when he was learning to cook burgers. They both came home with coral scrapes that needed to be watched and treated with antibiotic cream. Their laundry smelled really bad. But they were totally proud of all three, and me, well, I got over it--after all, they had the time of their lives! Thanks, Sail Caribbean! Ps I would have to say that if you had never traveled before, it would be a little hard to manage the USVI, but most of the other kids were sophisticated and flexible, and like my kids, managed the travel portion with no problem. Working with the admin team, even getting our friend from China to the USVI after he had serious visa problems worked out in the end--they went out of their way to pick him up and get him to his program with the other kids in his session. read more

My daughter went on Sail Caribbean twice. She did Alpha when she was 14 and returned for Foxtrot when she was 15 (2014 and 2015). The two trips were very different, and she loved them both. She truly gained self-esteem and self-sufficiency, developed real friendships, learned new skills in scuba and sailing, and loved the beauty of the BVI. The kids do their own cooking and cleaning of the boat so they learn teamwork and life skills. They learned about the ecosystem of the BVI and had plenty of fun activities. The experience took her outside her comfort zone in many ways and she acknowledges the personal strength she learned from that. From her telling, oversight was strong and rules were enforced. Both of these trips were magical experiences for her and her face lights up whenever she reminisces about them. read more

My son has been to this camp twice. He loved both experiences. The first year he went- he didn't know anyone. He had no trouble making friends and is still in touch with some of the kids he met. Last year he took a friend and they made new friends together. He loved diving and sailing. He loved sleeping on deck. He felt like his opinions mattered and he felt trusted to perform sailing duties given to him. Of course that's because you taught him well. He's not much of a cook at home but had fun making meals (chili cook off!) on the boat. His only complaint is that he wasn't able to stay all summer. read more

I was a student on the 2013 Sierra program as a junior in high school, and I had an absolutely amazing time. I was already very interested in marine biology, but doing this program convinced me that I wanted to go into marine biology as a career. The staff were so fun and made all the students feel welcome and included. The adventures we went on were fantastic, and the way the program was structured really helped me bond with the other students on the boat, some of whom I'm still in contact with. It's definitely not a vacation camp - we learned, worked hard, did chores, and faced a lot of challenges, but overall was a major defining experience in my life. Two of our sons have participated in Sail Caribbean for the past four years. Each was a certified diver before attending which enhanced their individual experiences. Some posts are critical of the conditions and/or the crew. The boats do not have air-conditioned berths, however, bear in mind, this is not a luxury cruise. The kids to cook, however, this was a fun experience for our boys. Those who did not want to cook were not forced to do so. We appreciated this as it taught the kids responsibility and self-reliance. There are other options for those wanting A/C and gourmet meals (Carnival or Norweigian). The crew is instructed to teach sailing techniques and, most importantly, boating safety. Safety is paramount on the water, so the crew is very strict with this facet of the experience, which is the way it should be. Kids who want to learn have a multitude of opportunities to do so. Our 14-year old ruptured an eardrum during a night dive and the crew immediately saw to his care. He was transported to Tortola via skiff and taken to a regional hospital well after 10:00 p.m. While en route, his boat captain called my wife and explained the situation and what was being done for him. While he was being treated, they provided him a phone so that he could call my wife, which was a significant relief. He was treated and released the next morning. Even though he could not dive again, the crew and other kids kept him active and engaged. Sail Caribbean is probably not for everyone, but for those seeking adventure, a challenge and an opportunity to learn a lot about themselves, this is a wonderful program through which to do so. I have done Sail Caribbean for 4 years after last summer, with more planned. From 13-17 years of age. Sail Caribbean offers new ways to think, grow, and learn. I'm from Kansas and had never touched a scuba tank or a sailboat before this camp, and now I am a Master Scuba Diver because of it. It gave me opportunities that I've never had before. It taught me about how to be resourceful with limited resources such as water and food (without starving me or leaving me without water), taught me to get along with other kids from around the country parts of the world, and how to cook, something my mother loves. The water on the boat is good quality. Never have I had water that's "bad tasting" unless it comes from non-Sail Caribbean tanks. Because space on a boat is limited, we can't all take a 5 minute fresh water shower like at home, for multiple days in between docking. The ocean bath followed by rinsing off in freshwater is a very fun and conservative way to do it. Not using that much water keeps the cost of the camp down too. The sleeping arrangements on the boat are great. We have ample space to hang hammocks, and each boat comes with bunk beds in the front or larger beds in the aft cabins. They are very specious for the size onboard a boat. The couch in the living room pulls out into a 6 person bed if necessary. The food on the boats is fantastic. Each crew member (kids) is rotated though each meal every few days. We make every meal under safety guidance from the staff. The meals are well thought out and planned for long days with many calories needed. Snacks are also provided if you get hungry. The activities on and off the boat are some of he most fun things I've ever done. From exploring untouched islands, to racing small boats across the Bitter End harbor, you are never bored with the camp. Scuba diving is another thing that is focused heavily upon in a few of the programs. I did Charlie for 3 years and Bravo for 1, so I've logged excess of 75 dives in the camp. The sailing is also very fun. They teach you everything you need to know about it and they have a hands off approach after you learn, but safety is always #1, so if there is ever a problem, they are quick to help. I have always felt safe at the camp. Wearing life jackets while sailing might sound like a drag, you adjust to them quickly. The Staff always make sure everything is perfectly safe for the kids whenever we do something. The rules at the camp are simple. Do your chores, don't be rude to other campers, islanders, or staff, don't do illegal activities such as drink or smoke, and follow basic instructions. In my 4 years, I have never found Sail Caribbean to be like a "boot camp". They are gentle with instruction and never order you around. Sail Caribbean has given me so many opportunities for my future, and some of my best memories and friends (one of which I flew to another country just to visit). I recommend this camp to anyone who loves diving, sailing, or just having fun. Even if you've never done any of it before like me, you will still have a great time learning. read more

Sending our kids to Sail Caribbean was the best decision we ever made! The first year they both stayed 3 weeks and had amazing experiences. My daughter loved the sailing portion (didn't love the scuba so she focused just on sailing) and she learned a ton, was sailing beautifully, and made many friends. My son loved both the sailing and scuba. He learned all about sailing, and dived many exciting spots, including cave diving at night and the Wreck of the Rhone. Both children made great friends with other kids AND with their counselors. The second summer they both were excited to go back and again had incredible adventures. They learned everything about sailing - not just the fun captaining, but the real skills of docking, mooring, taking care of the boat, teamwork with their mates to make their trip go smoothly, tying knots, etc. For those looking for a great sailing and snorkel/dive experience for their kids... this is the place! (if you're looking for luxury sleeping arrangements and food - I don't think ANY camp will fit the bill!). The kids cooked their own meals, cleaned up and really had responsibilities on the boat - something I find important in the growth of my children. My daughter became a staff member her 3rd summer and keeps in touch with many of her mates and counselors who will be lifelong friends. Now when we go on family sailing trips, the KIDS are the captains and they have really showed off their fantastic boating/sailing skills. They have the confidence and skills to sail on their own and I am so proud and happy for them - they will have many sailing adventures in their future thanks to Sail Caribbean! read more

My 17-year-old son attended Sail Caribbean for the first time last summer (2015) and cannot wait to return this summer. We found it last-minute and everyone on staff was completely helpful, patient, and friendly while making sure that everything was in order and ALL of our questions got answered. My son, who previously had not been away from family much, completely thrived on his trip. I had worried a bit about his finding friends and was delighted to find out about all of the awesome connections he made with people, crew, and staff. My son not only completed his open water scuba certification, he went on to complete his advanced open water certification, plus two sailing certifications. My son has always loved the water, marine life, and this trip was everything he desired. Living aboard the catamaran was certainly not a five-star hotel experience, but the kids really enjoyed the closeness of living, working, and sleeping on the boat together. Sleeping under the stars was a huge treat. I cannot think of one thing that my son felt disappointed about. Well, actually, regarding getting to the island for the trip, my son experienced huge flight delays and ultimately was forced to spend the first night away from the boat. He was incredibly disappointed with this, but was buoyed (pun intended) by the fact that there was staff to meet him and spend the night in the hotel with him and then personally take him to the boat the next morning. The staff is incredibly wonderful. I cannot thank them enough. One more thing: after the three-week trip was over, we received a wonderful recap from the crew on his boat. It included many things that they appreciated about my son, as well as one thing that he could work on personally. The loving way that they wrote about my son let me know that he was indeed in good hands. I know that this organization really understands and appreciates teenagers. Thank you!! read more

If you're thinking about sending your child to camp here, DO IT. I attended Sail Caribbean twice, once in the Bravo program in 2009, and the second time in the Charlie program in 2010. As a now 21-year-old, I still look back on those experiences as the greatest of my life. The staff is so wonderful there. I had no clue how to sail going into this journey, but I always felt safe as we traveled and very well looked after by both the land and sea staff. The dive staff was wonderful, too. They were such great teachers, and whenever I go diving in the Virgin Islands now, my dive masters somehow always know that I was trained at Sail Caribbean. Looking back, one of my favorite aspects about this camp was how humbling it was (in the best way possible). The captain and mates give the campers all the tools necessary to sail, cook, dive, and clean, and the campers are expected to complete those tasks on their own (with the staff stepping in when needed). It very much shaped my character as a 14 and 15 year old, but I had no clue that's what was happening because I had so much fun doing it. I made the most amazing friends over these two summers, and I still keep in touch with both the campers and staff today. There are also many opportunities for whatever peaks your child's interest... I spent most of my time scuba diving and snorkeling, but when I wanted a little change in routine, I participated in activities like inner-tubing, windsurfing, and hiking. I miss this place so much, and my only regret is that I didn't go for a third summer! read more

I am so surprised by the negative reviews. My son has been on Sail Caribbean trips three different times, ages 13, 15 and 16. Each time they have been life changing and for different reasons. He came back more independent, confident and competent. His experience in both sailing and scuba diving were unbelievable, and he is well on his way to achieving advanced certifications in both sailing and scuba. I found the staff, both on land and on the boats to be mature, responsible adults who took their job seriously and yet were able to mentor and teach my son life lessons in a fun and enjoyable way. I never felt out of touch with my son during any of the trips, communication was regular, and there were always updates on the website with great pictures and a summary of what they were doing every day. Is this experience a little "rugged?" Yes, and it's designed to be that way. My family has also spent a lot of time in the BVI's and elsewhere on sailing trips. Those experiences were different, i.e. captain and cook, no responsibilities, just vacation. Sail Caribbean is meant to be a learning experience where the sailors as a group negotiate and meet their own needs, of course with the guidance of experienced adults. How many teens are able to say they docked a 42 foot boat by themselves, took the helm during a storm, scuba dived and saw turtles and other extraordinary sea life, cooked and cleaned for themselves and their peers for 3 weeks, earned advance scuba and International sailing certifications, and volunteered with local island teens to care for the islands and the environment? Not many. My son is a better person for having these experiences, and he is lucky to have had the opportunity to be on Sail Caribbean. My son now aspires to work there, and hopefully someday will. I am happy to talk to any parent and my son would talk to any teen interested in more information. Reading some of the other reviews I've seen on Yelp I am incredibly surprised at some of the experiences I've read. I've gone on SC for the past two summers and loved it. All the staff were super welcoming and patient. From the dive instructors to the day to day counselors you live with on board, there is a deep and mutual amount of respect that develops over just 3 weeks. There is enough room on all the boats for campers to find places to sleep, but I found myself in a hammock almost every night looking at the stars in the warm Caribbean air. Learning sailing and diving is all hands on. The instructors explain everything clearly so that every camper understands the concepts. I had never sailed before my first time at SC, and I feel very confident on a sailboat after SC. The balance between activities, down time and sailing is very well done. Our whole boat was exhausted by the end of the sail so downtime was highly needed. You really get to know everyone is your fleet over the course as you interact with them all the time. Both years I found myself enjoying the company of all my campers and counselors. There is an expectation to do chores and take turns cooking on the boat. This is, after all, a camp and not a luxury cruise. All my fellow campers were willing to do their part in helping on the boat. We all did was needed to be done on the boat. If you or your child is outgoing and looking for an adventure and to meet new friends I would highly recommend this program. If you want to do anything you want for 3 weeks in the Virgin islands, then you are probably better off staying at a luxury resort. read more
