Not too many options in the five boroughs, but these guys really helped out. Very friendly service, they make sure you practiced a little before you go into the water with their own private pool and they double check to make sure your gear is all set. I dove at the Hampton Springs spot and it was really fun. Though the visibility is a little low underwater, it is a great place to practice and you can still see some stuff below the surface. I loved scuba diving and like most people when you initially try to get your scuba certification, your probably looking for the "best deal" like where can I get certified for the "cheapest price". Well you can go on yelp look up reviews call 15 scuba shops and I can almost guarantee not going with Ocean Horizons Scuba is a big mistake. When I went scuba shopping some places will give you your certification after one day in a pool and say "hey your certified, just go complete the course online and finish your certification dives and your PADI certified" After one lesson in the pool do you think your ready to get tested on skills underwater in the ocean or a quarry you decide? Paul's prices are so reasonable....There is really no competition. Paul & Jimmy (the handsome instructors) are the gurus of the ocean they drill the concept of diving and the risks as well as understanding. They embed information into your brain. The course is 5 weeks, that's right 5 long weeks of water time(spent either at YMCA park slope or Ft Hamilton high school) and class time... and if you aren't picking it up fast enough they wont "let you fly just yet" they will take you under there wing and spend individual time with you in the pool or tell you to come for extra classes(no they wont charge you, they genuinely have your best interest at heart). If you feel uncomfortable about a skill they will review it with you, over and over again. They prepare you to take the NAUI certification and are more than willing to help you out with anything. Paul plans trips to Cozumel and Micronesia and other places once your certified and also to complete your certification. Like I reiterated when you take a class with Paul not only do you become a certified diver but you just got a first class ticket to one of the best circle of divers to travel and dive the world with! Not only would I go back and do it all over again and again but this time I would take the paper with the list of other dive places and throw it out and not waste my time. I went to Thailand and It was such a great diving experience I owe it all to two hardcore scuba instructors. Working a full time job, and going to school Paul accommodates to every schedule possible. We had an incredible experience, with instruction being both academic and practical at the same time. Paul demonstrated a patience that remained unabated, answering all of our questions, and never failing to share his wealth of knowledge gained from decades of scuba experience. Pat, his colleague, was the best guy ever, fun and surprised us in helpfulness, showing up to provide assistance wherever he could. We would never recommend any shop other than OHS to do your certification, and look forward to diving with Paul again on his future trips!

Met Bob, was very nice to me, explained I needed to buy equipment to continue...okay no problem. He showed me various masks, snorkels, fins and boots and explained them all, answered all my questions. Ring me up...holy **** bit expensive, but me not researching ahead of time or knowing much about pricing of equipment, okay swallowed the lump in my throat and went along with it. Had my 2nd and 3rd indoor classes, again with Alex. Couldn't have had a better instructor. Did the online classes, took me exceptionally long due to a new and very demanding job. Eventually got it done and recently did my open dives (pretty cold out but came this far and wasn't going to stop). I'm now open water certified and eventually will be looking into the advanced cert. Bob.....so I read a lot of comments on here that he is rude, he is a crook, he's this and he's that. Maybe it's just me, since I've grown up around sarcasm in my family, but he didn't bother me a bit. Can sarcasm be taken as someone being rude? Maybe....definitely for those that are hypersensitive. When you're 100 feet under water, hypersensitive is the last thing you want to be. I felt a little rushed at first, but now understand why....there is a lot to learn, and I had to take a refresher indoor class as 1 1/2 months passed since my 3rd class. You lose a lot of what you learned if you don't use it, that goes with anything. Scuba diving, although a lot of fun, has to be taken very seriously as you could be facing life threatening situations if you are not prepared. Was he sarcastic at times? Yes. Is he funny? To me, yes. Was he helpful? Absolutely. I'm a fan.

The new Owner said that he would not honor it, even though there was no expiration date and regardless, the new laws do not allow expiration dates on certificates. As I stated in my previous comment, he will be sued because it is unlawful to refuse gift certificates that were issued by previous Owners. It is the Buyers responsibility and obligation, in their contract with the Seller, to receive a credit for any and all gift certificates issued but not redeemed as of the date of closing. If this information was not provided to the Buyer by the Seller, then he can file suit with them if he so chooses. I've been diving for years, but not very frequently and never had my own equipment. Recently…read moreplanned a trip to Belize and decided to finally bite the bullet and get my own setup. Randy was great at walking me through options and set me up with a great full travel set. He made sure everything was suited to my dive needs and came in time for my trip (despite general supply chain issues). It's been a while since my last dive, so I didn't want to waste my precious time in Belize on a refresher course. Randy instructed me through one of the most thorough refresher courses I've had in the pool the week before my trip. It was great as I was able to dive on day 1 in Belize without needing to take a refresher there. More importantly, it was a great review of all of the key skills and got me aquatinted with my new equipment. Just got back from the week of diving and it was awesome! Felt super confident under water and the equipment worked out great. It was so nice to have my own equipment I was familiar with and fit perfectly as opposed to the usual mixed bag of rental gear. These guys are very professional and experienced and they emphasize safety a lot. I was able to learn and get really comfortable with all skills. The training really helped me to stay confident when I did open water sessions overseas. Highly recommended and I will definitely go back for more advanced classes.
