Being one of the smaller state parks in New York what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in recreation. Known for its charter fishing fleet stationed on the North side of the park which embarks daily on fishing adventures (equipment provided) on the great South Bay or North Atlantic. There are two major fishing peers in the park one on the north and my favorite that over looks the Robert Moses causeway on the south, unlike the charter boats you are on you own with equipment for fishing off the peers but the good news is that there is a bait and tackle shop located near the North peer should you need some hooks or bait. Captree offers a bar and restaurant of sorts and concession stand if you're hungry after a long day of charter boat fishing or just stop in for the occasional live music. Don't forget to take a walk or bike ride on the ocean parkway green way, the trail head begins here and ends 13.7 miles away on jones beach. Come to captree to get out in the ocean air and maybe even have a picnic if you desire, the views from the south end on the overlook beach are fantastic.

I can't believe you can just rent a boat here with no prior experience at all, but honestly this…read morewas pretty great. I booked a day boat here for an afternoon with four of my girlfriends. Upon check-in we'd learned that the limit is typically 4 people (700 lb maximum), but since most of us are pretty small we were well under that weight limit even as five people, so they allowed it (and I lived to write this review so, all good). After signing my life away and a very quick motor tutorial by a kid who looked like he couldn't be older than middle school, we were on our way. The motor on this boat took a little getting used to, but once I got the hang of it I was a pretty good captain (I'd like to think). We put down the anchor and got out to explore Bird and Gull Islands, then headed over to another beach with a hill to climb up and get a bird's eye view of the area. Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the harbor, but we kept the party going with some drinks and food (will review that separately). Jay (who I think is the owner or manager?) told us we were only allowed to rent a boat if we took a picture and it turns out he was serious (see the photo shoot results in my photos which turned out pretty cute). He took these on his phone so not sure what else he plans to do with them.

At noon the food stand opens where you can get a beautiful lobster roll as well as many other foods and drinks. Ice cold beer and lobster roll was superb. Gift shop is fun. Clam chowder has chunks of real clam and potatoes. Restaurant quality fried calamari with seasoned breading. Quesadilla was a big size and the chicken was juicy. They advised us to place a sign on our dash stating we were at Ralph's so the public safety wouldn't issue any tickets.

Thankfully, someone finally put up some photos of FOOD and we went! Reminder: I always judge based on the type of place. I'm not comparing this to a fine dining restaurant. This is a great little casual place to watch the water, drink a craft beer and eat some darn decent chow! First off: GPS took us to the private members only club next door. We had to hunt to find it. Once we did, could there be better views on a sunny spring day??? They have a nice covered tent in case the sun is too much for you. You order at the window and they give you a buzzer for when your food is ready. You go next store to the bait shop for beverages...and yes, there are drawers of live bait next to the fridge, but sealed and no smell at all. Here's what we ordered: Pear & Gorgonzola Salad with Champagne dressing: WOW! SOOOOOO good! Real pears (unlike the fancy-schmancy expensive place we went a few months back that had the audacity to serve canned pears!). Nice fresh greens, yummy dressing (NOT ken's or anything of that nature, thankfully), nice fresh crunchy walnuts, cranberries and a generous helping of yummy gorgonzola. WIN! Shrimp Tacos: Three nicely appointed with fresh slaw. The tacos are flour and should have been warmed. If they were, this would have been perfect. Still, not bad for $!5! Fried Clam Strips & Fries: Because, you just have to, and stop judging us. It was worth the calories for the perfectly fried platter without a lick of grease to it. I could have stood for a little more salt on the fries. Clam strips did not seem to be pieces of whole clams...maybe minced mixed into a batter? Not my favorite way, but the batter was tasty and it did the trick. Overall, this place is a find. If you want a quiet hidden hang with good food and a spectacular view, this is the place.

(The crew made all the difference) The boat is beautiful, clean, fully accommodating with stocked bathrooms (had sinks and soap!). The crew provided everything we needed, plus educated us and helped us every step of the way. We caught a ton of fish, which they offered to either descale or filet for us (and they did a wonderful, quick job of that). The highlight was the crew. Ilya and Matt were super accommodating from educating us and giving us tips on how to catch and reel the fish in, to placing bait on our hooks and unhooking each fish that my family of five caught (all while helping others as well). The captain even danced with my daughter (5 yrs old with special needs) when she came inside the cabin and was starting to get tired of being out by the side fishing. These men were such hard-working, honest gentlemen- it sealed the deal for us to plan our next trip with Osprey and every fishing charter in the future will be with them! (I'll add that our boat was not packed in without room to move like other charters, and we had many other people on our charter that were long-time fisherman that have chosen Osprey for years. That says a lot). If you're looking for a fishing charter in this area and you're either first-timers or have fishing experience- look no further. You won't be disappointed. *I'm not one to put personal photos of my family, but the crew even helped take photos of my kids' first catches and sent them to me privately. Having a young child with special needs limits our family adventures so everything they did that went above and beyond really was appreciated.
