What a great experience we had with JK Kayak and SUP. This was our first time kayaking and we were in great hands with Joe and Connor. The website provided all the information we needed to be prepared for our adventure. Upon arrival, Joe and Connor got us fitted with our safety vests and our kayaks and then gave us lessons on how to use the paddle, get in/out of the kayak and provided general navigation and waterway guidance; from there we were off and loving life! We kayaked in Cold Spring Harbor just behind the lab and had an awesome time. It was so relaxing and quiet as we glided across the water. Joe led us in the front and Connor picked up the rear so we always felt safe and in good hands. Since this was our first time, we opted for a 1hour lesson/tour and Joe told us that most of his customers, at the end of the tour, say they wanted more time. This past weekend, I took a 3-hour kayaking tour of Cold Spring Harbor. The weather began cloudy and cool with the harbor as still as glass. Then, the wind picked up and the sun came out. It was glorious. I met some lovely people and exchanged phone numbers with one of them for a future kayaking trip. Joe and his assistant were great. They made sure no stragglers were left behind, and Joe shared details about the things we were seeing along the way. A great experience! Went on the 90 minute SUP in Cold Spring Harbor with Joe and it was very relaxing. He is knowledgeable about the area as well as the wild life and truly passionate about SUP. Had an awesome experience paddleboarding for the first time! I have tried a couple other SUP places on LI and this was my favorite for numerous reasons. Booking was super easy, even with a groupon - they have an online booking system that's super easy to navigate and tells you the times and how many slots are left (perfect for when you're going as a group). We went to Cold Spring Harbor (all of us newbies) and the weather was perfect. We were fitted for life jackets, paddles were measured to our height, and even the boards were given based on our weight. (At a different rental place they didn't bother to do any of this, gave everyone the same, did not even ask if we wanted to use life vests, I took one from a pile on the side). Boards were brought to the water for us, and we were taught the basics on how to get on, balance, and paddle by Joe the owner. Then they helped us on. Kris and Gianna stayed with our group the whole time, one in the front and one in the back. Both were awesome - pleasant and knowledgeable. They showed us tricks on the SUPs and let us rest when we needed to. I have to say I was compelled to write this after I had a not-so-great experience at another SUP place, where the owner was gruff and droned on about how we know nothing about SUP, was unpleasant, and even though we were doing a rental and not a lesson, the lesson I overheard from another group was not so comprehensive. Made me realize how awesome JK kayak was compared to others. If you PM me I'll be happy to share my story. But would HIGHLY recommend JK kayak for SUP and kayaking. Joe & Chris were fantastic! This was my first experience kayaking and I was little apprehensive before we arrived and instantly felt at ease. They explained everything really well before we went out on the water, making sure we had the right hand placement and technique. They were also very informative out on the water giving us tips on weather/wave gaging and how to advance our stride. My husband and I loved the two hour session and swore to go again with them next year. Truly enjoyed every minute of this friendly and knowledgable experience, and will recommend it to all of my friends and family. Upon reading a negative review I would also like to add this. I personally received plenty of notification (at least three emails stating) that before the day of our trip we needed to check the site for weather cancelations. Great day with my daughter! Never been kayaking before and wanted to do something different with my 16 yr old. Joe was very helpful and gave very easy to follow instructions that everybody could follow. I did the short 1 hr trip just to see what it was like but wish I could've been on kayak longer. It was easy and lots of fun! Not easy to please a teenager, but my daughter had a great time as well. Next time I think we will try the stand up paddle boarding. My best friend and I were first timers at kayaking. We booked a groupon for this activity on a whim and we were pleasantly surprised. During a summer of very few options for activities, this is a perfect choice for a relaxing and enjoyable activity that almost anyone can do. I came with my sister to the Cold Spring Harbor 2 hour tour at 9:30AM. (Arrive 45-1 hour early, please, parking is hard around that area). Joe and Tom were very friendly and helpful, we were informed that the equipment was all wiped down. They have waterproof gear available for purchase, and also water. Prior to entering into the water he gives a helpful tutorial on how to hold the paddles and different stroke techniques. The tour was around Cold Spring Harbor. Between the two leaders he was able to keep the group organized (5 people) and safe, although Cold Spring Harbor didn't have jet skis or lots of moving boats to navigate. He pointed out 3 or 4 homes of famous/wealthy people (John Lennon's former home, Tiffany's former home, Watson (of DNA fame)'s home, and several types of wildlife, as well as give instructions on how to best paddle. We really enjoyed and would recommend this tour. It is a bit pricey--for two people it was almost 200 with taxes included. There is a downpayment when you book and then the balance is paid in cash. Joe also offers stand up paddling (which sounds like it is very weather-dependent). No rentals. You can tell Joe loves what he's doing and that's very contagious. read more

Did our third kayak outing with Joe and Joey yesterday in Southampton with all our children and their "other half". (9 to be exact). We have done 2 hour trips out of Southampton and Oyster Bay with Joe. This year we upped the anti and did a 3 hour tour. As always, Joe and Joey were fabulous. We did miss Chrissy this year since we kayaked later in the season than we have in the past. but nonetheless less we all had the best time! I am the oldest and the most out of shape in the group...therefore falling way behind everyone. But that didn't matter because Joey most graciously was in the back with me, being ever so kind, pleasant, funny and helpful. ( as he seems to do every time we do this.) And Joe.. they don't come any nicer or better. So all I can say is book a "trip"'with JK Kayak. You will have a fabulous time and won't be disappointed! This was a great tour! Joe is very friendly and helpful and made the overall experience very enjoyable. Started out with a brief lesson on how to use the kayak and steer, etc. It was supposed to storm during our scheduled time, and Joe was very accommodating and went out earlier with us so that we did not get rained on. These guys were doing free demos at the Bay Shore Marina during the Great South Bay Run and they were so kind and wonderful to my 5-year-old, who was desperate to kayak on his own even though the minimum age is 10. One of the guys got in the water with him and pushed his boat around, giving him tips on how to paddle and words of encouragement. They went above and beyond for him and he had the time of his life! The tour guides were terrific and knew so much about the harbor, it's wildlife, and the beautiful houses lining the shore. Kayaking is a perfect activity during this pandemic because you are comfortably spaced but still able to share the experience with others on the tour. JK Kayak is a little pricey, but you get your money's worth. Did a kayak tour and paddle board session on two separate occasions and was very pleased with each one. Excellent experience for beginners. The mini-lesson on land was helpful, but the strokes are different once you are in the water. (Only saying this as an experienced paddler).
