Quite possibly the best meal I've ever had in WNY. I'd give them 5 stars if they offered vegan items all the time. Went tonight for a special event organized by Buffalo Vegan Drinks but the owner of restaurant told us they can do vegan with a couple days notice. This is Buffalo's smallest restaurant, only 700 sqft with a 98 sqft kitchen. As such, they can't keep a wide variety of food on hand and have to plan ahead. There were 5 vegan dishes and each was phenomenal. Guacamole with a twist had pickled veg, lots of fresh ingredients, some magical crisp with seeds, and large flat pieces of house made hard candy which sounds odd but really worked. Guac was served with flour chips. Pho was unexpected by so flavorful with a nice kick and pickle slices in top. Humus topped with pepitas, spices, pickled cauliflower and oil was served with what seemed like fresh pita-inspired toasted flour tortilla triangles. Mole made with 30 ingredients and topped with roasted and pickled veggies was bursting with flavor. Final dish was an outstanding tiny bowl of broccoli that looked simple but tasted cheesy, vinegary, salty and just crazy tasty. The chef truly transforms the food. I haven't seen anyone else in town apply this kind of skill to such simple ingredients since Martin Cooks and honestly, this food was even better. So much skill. I was really impressed. read more

This was one of the best meals I've had in Buffalo. Born and raised, but have lived in NYC for five years. This still takes the cake. Yes, it's a little pricey for "Buffalo standards", but despite other reviews I still left full and delighted. I regret getting the duck for +$35 over the lamb, but you live and learn. Will be back! read more

I'm struggling with this one and maybe I'll still change my mind. I wavered between three and four stars but ultimately, the fact that we had to get wings, tots, and pizza logs at Goodbar afterward is enough to keep me at three. First and foremost, I really want to like this place and will be going back to give it a second shot. The building is beautiful and trendy and a great atmosphere for going out with friends. I love that they are elevating Mexican food and hope they continue to improve. When we arrived, the three of us were seated very quickly although it was a bit confusing when we first walked in. There was nobody to greet us and we weren't sure if we should seat ourselves. The service was attentive but not overly intrusive so no complaints there. Between the three of us, we ordered the guacamole, shrimp, cheese plate, vegetables with mole, ramen, and two desserts (and several bottles of wine but who's counting). The guacamole was ok. Too acidic and the addition of ground up bugs seemed to be to add quirkiness but ultimately added nothing to the dish. Shrimp was perfectly cooked but the corn puree underneath was brown, gluey, and did not have a distinct flavor. I would not know it was corn if I didn't know already. The cheese was good and the mole was delicious. However, the vegetables could not stand up to that rich, powerful sauce. I think it's the wrong vehicle to showcase that beautiful mole. The ramen was super disappointing. They poured the broth in at the table but it was lukewarm at best. It also didn't have that addition of fat that ramen should. When you ate it, you really couldn't get past the flavor of oregano. I'm already not an oregano fan but it was soooo overpowering. There could have been a good broth in there but it was difficult to tell. We decided to order to cherry s'mores dessert and the peach sorbet. Holy crap were they good. I could describe them but honestly, just go try them. Creative, inventive, beautiful, and freaking delicious. However, at the end of the meal, all three if us (who are pretty small by he way) were still very hungry. Even taking the wine out of the equation, the dinner was certainly pricey so leaving feeling unsatisfied was disappointing. read more

Great food however the portions are way to small and over priced. You have to order two entries to make a meal. Bigger portions with the same price and I would give them 5 stars. His last restaurant in Youngstown had the same problem. read more

I've been twice - LOVED it the first time and left really bummed the 2nd time. Sure, it was more than a year apart, but most recently we liked 2/5 dishes and were disappointed by the lack of non-pork options. It's an expensive experience, one we will try again as the menu continually changes, but know that you will need a snack either before or after since it's a tasting menu almost like tapas. read more

Trendy but casual atmosphere. Friendly staff excellent chef. Everything is fresh and innovative. Plates are thoroughly explained and expertly presented. This was a culinary delight! And bonus you get 2 desserts! The restaurant strives for zero waste and locally sourced when possible. read more

This place is exceptionally creative. I hope that it's not too creative for blue collar Buffalo. My husband and I had the following: Guacamole: this came with a salty caramel brittle with added a unique sweet kick to avocado with crushed spicy crickets. The presentation was cool on a piece of tile. The portion was small considering the $8 price but the presentation and taste more than made up for it. Acapulco ceviche: this had a surprising tomato taste that overpowered the fresh citrusy taste common with ceviche. At $15 it was reasonable and presented in a manner that showed care for display. Tiradito: this same with raw red snapper served sashimi style garnished with strawberry and sorbet. The taste was outstanding. It's $14 and worth every penny of the tiny portion. Order two! Scallop Aguachile: the raw scallops come with a cucumber and apple garnish and sauce that's mildly spicy. The flavor is unique for scallop and very enjoyable. Highly recommend at $16. Bone marrow: this is very different than bone marrow served anywhere. They serve this cold and puréed and place back into the bone after preparation. It tastes like a mousse more than the normal taste of gel like bone marrow. I wasn't a huge fan but my husband loved it. It's comes with four small slices of bread and we had to ask for more. Chicken with Poblano: this is shredded chicken served sweet in a poblano sauce which is green and mildly spicy. This is the largest portion served when compared to the above option and priced at $17. It's delicious but not a full entree size. Arroz con leche: a different take on the traditional, comes with horchata ice cream and two pieces of house made puff pastry and small pieces of grapefruit. It's tastes great priced at $9 Our total bill was $113.10 (add to that tip). We were satisfied but not overly full. The taste and presentation was exceptional. I highly recommend this place for a unique flavor sensation. This is not a bread and pasta, fill your plate kind of place. It is also not a rice and beans stuff your face type of place. For adventurous eaters looking to experience a variety of flavors, this place is a must! The service is attentive, polite and personal. The owner talked to us and explained the different food options. They don't have a liquor license but do serve unique juice drinks including a watermelon and a lime non-alcoholic cocktail. read more

Las Puertas is a refreshing concept in the scene of cultural restaurants in contemporary America. I see many new creative and/or up-scale cultural cuisines opening; elevating them from what White America sees as fast food and cheap eats, and educating on what authentic food from these respective cultures entails. The restaurant sits in an rather unexpected location; a somewhat run-down residential neighborhood. The building itself is small, curious, and minimalist, standing out from its environment. In terms of dining experience, the drinks and food are executed in a creative, tapas and tasting menu style. The odd part is that there were no prices listed for à la carte. (Ordering à la carte yields the same amount of food as the tasting portions.) It was also strange that ordering a few individual dishes was almost the same price as doing the entire tasting. All that aside, the food was good albeit not stand-out. The visual presentation was present but the flavors did not reach the same level of resolution; the desert was best among the dishes we chose. Overall, an great concept. Visually and creatively indulgent but could reach a higher level of taste complexity. Side note: The reservation system is lacking. There is no way to do it online; one has to call, leave a voicemail, and wait for a call back. read more

This was the best meal I've had in Buffalo. We went last week and let the chef choose our courses. He did an amazing job, explained each course, and also happily accommodated my mom, who does not eat seafood. Needless to say, the service was good. The food was even better though. Our meal started with a warm traditional Mexican drink I'd never had, but I definitely want more of. This was followed by a soup which I believe was corn based but could be wrong. Then we had a ceviche like dish which was to die for, as mushroom taco which I think they are well known for (my favorite course), a pork dish which was very good, and a spectacular chocolate desert. Honestly, Because I don't remember the names of the dishes i feel like I may not be doing them justice. but I think that they change the menu quite a bit so you'll probably have to get something different anyway. There seems to be a little grumbling about portions and price on other reviews. It is very nice place with excellent service and food. It is priced accordingly and absolutely worth it. I can't wait for my next excuse to to go to Las Puertas. . read more

8 of us went for dinner here last night- we had a nice table off of the main dining room. We left our meal in the chefs hands and he did not disappoint- curating our entire dining experience. We had an excellent time and I look forward to returning. Check it out! The hibiscus tea & desserts were delicious- make sure to get your guacamole with crickets! read more

Enjoyable meal, quite pricey. For the price I don't expect more food per say but I would expect an impeccably clean restaurant. It was clean, but I expect clean ceilings, cleans windows, glass, no cobwebs in the corner, this is what one expects. Service is good. 3 different people bringing you food throughout the meal which is just "okay". We did add the steak option, I would say it's worth it. Best dish was the tuna followed by amazing dessert. Drink was excellent. Menus were cardstock and bent up, again, these small details should be taken care of, print new menus each night if they are mishandled. read more

Best restaurant in Buffalo. Wow. First time in tonight. Definitely an indulgence, but worth every penny. From the cocktails to the tasting menu to dessert, I enjoyed every bite. Service was outstanding. You can tell the chef has put seasonal and thoughtful spins on each course. Will be back! read more

Visited once before couldn't eat because it's a tiny room that requires reservations. Whatever, cocktails were delicious. Called the second time to make reservations to try their tasting menu with a friend; the phone number goes straight to voicemail. The voicemail was left five days ago and I still have NOT received a response. Followed up via another voicemail and iMessage and still nothing. Very disappointing. Somewhat over priced tasting menu. However, could potentially thrive better in a bigger city in my opinion. My suggestion is to return inquires about reservations more promptly. To clarify -- not responding to a customer messages does not constitute as being "busy". read more

Buffalo is lucky to have such an amazing restaurant. Everything about the decor, menu, and experience is extremely thoughtful. I would deter from listening to the negative reviews that state the portions are too small or it's too expensive. My experience has been that I am perfectly satiated by the end of the meal - which I can only assume is intentional. They rotate the menu seasonally and it's amazing to see what the chefs do with what's available. The wine pairings are also very well thought out and compliments the dishes. Everything is also so well seasoned, having multiple elements that elevate the dish (salty, sweet, acidic, texture). The cocktails are also meant to be simple, but well made so you can taste every element. I wouldn't recommend Las Puertas to everyone. It's not for those who are used to your classic American or French white table experience. However, if you have a large appreciation of the time and thought that goes into a tasting menu, a culinary adventure, and an open mind, I would highly encourage you to visit. Chef Victor, kudos to you and your team! read more

Total disregard for their diners. Had a reservation made the week before for Sept 4th at 6:30. Arrived on time to find them closed. Called left a message on the answering machine but no one called back the next day. Called after 5 the next day as I was curious and the person on the phone replied that they were closed for the holiday (the day after the holiday). When asked why they took the reservation in the first place, the response was "we forgot to call." This was stated with a flippant attitude that explains all the reviews mentioning bad service. Thank you for screwing up what was supposed to be a birthday celebration. Having been to the best high end Latin restaurants in the US (Topolobampo and Fronterra) I have no need to put up with such disregard for the customer. read more

We are visiting Buffalo from Boston and love great food. The flavors of the dishes at Las Puertas rival the best restaurants of Boston and exceed many of them. Every dish was spiced and seasoned perfectly. The appetizer portions were perfect for sharing between the 4 of us. We ordered eight in total for the 4 of us and enjoyed every item. The vegetables were perfectly cooked. The seafood was fresh and the pork belly was falling apart as it should be. The flavor of every dish was distinct and wonderful. We finished the dinner by sharing a single bone in rib eye. It was perfectly cooked ( maybe sous vide first then finished?). I cut mine with a fork, it was so tender. It was obvious that this was a prime cut of meat. It was gently seasoned and topped with butter. Las Puertas hit a home run with the quality of the meat combined with the way it was prepared. I have not had a steak this good in any restaurant in the last 10 years in Boston. Thank you. Although pretty full, we shared 3 desserts. In terms of value, we would have paid at least 2-4 times as much for this quality of a meal in Boston. The 2+ hour experience, combined with live music is quite memorable. read more

Ate here last week and enjoyed the food and setting tremendously. Its truly a beautiful place in which to enjoy a meal that is artfully crafted and full of ingredients and flavors not found elsewhere in Buffalo. I think we caught the server on a bad night. She wasn't rude per se--let's say curt. By omitting the normal pleasantries made by servers at pretty much every restaurant on earth, like asking us if we liked the food we ordered or wanted to order more, she communicated to us that she couldn't wait to be done with us--and there was no-one waiting for our table. It didn't ruin the meal, but I really wanted to give Las Puertas 5 stars on my first visit... read more

The best food in Buffalo. Not the best value, or the most popular scene. But for my dollar, I believe that the chef, Victor, is the best at his craft in Buffalo. The menu is rotating to reflect seasonal ingredients, so I won't linger on what I specifically had; in any case, it was all exceptional, from cocktail to first appetizer to main to desert. Instead, book a table, block off two hours, order a cocktail, and let Victor guide you through a full tasting menu. It's worth it. read more

Minuscule portions, uninspired food at ridiculously high prices and four very disappointed customers. No prior mention that the only menu option would be a $105/person pre fixe meal. We each had one drink before dinner and one glass of wine with dinner. So you would think that $650 for four people would get you a pretty incredible meal in Buffalo, but not at Las Puertas. I was so disappointed and aggravated with our experience, I took the time to write the owner/chef a letter. Several weeks later and I've still received no response. Apparently the owner doesn't care about customer satisfaction, so I'm writing this review. read more

We had such a delicious experience there last night and are so happy we stumbled upon this place while we were walking o! Austin and I sat at the bar, shared 4 small plates and had awesome conversation with the folks next to us and the workers. The restaurant only seats 35 I think they said. Mostly small tables but with one big table reserved for big parties that can sit up to 10. It's pretty much a family owned business, chef Victor prepares the food in the back along with his sister, chefs girlfriend and mother hostess and they have a pastry chef Madelyn who prepares the decadent desserts at the far section of the bar where we were sitting, so we watched her all night Chef Victor thinks the human connection piece is so important and tries to at least see his costumers once during their stay sometimes serving up drinks at the bar or hand delivering some of the dishes. The 4 small plates we shared were: Jackfruit (a meaty fruit native to Mexico with the perfect balance between Sweet and spicy), Crab ceviche, potatoes and poblano (my favorite I think), and pork belly( I don't even eat meat all that much anymore but this dish was prepared exquisitely the meat just melted in our mouths full of flavor and in a bean and mushroom sauce) for dessert we shared the spicy fiesta which was fudge mole, caramel, banana ice cream, and this spicy delicious brittle crumbed on top. We definitely will be back! It's located at 385 Rhode Island! Their dog a beautiful gray Weimaraner named Leroy Brown can also be seen often sitting and looking out the door next door. read more

Had such a great experience here. Enjoyed the chef's table where we got to learn all about the dishes and the thought process behind them. Everything tasted so good. Giving it a four because the food truly was delicious. I enjoyed the flavors and freshness. The service was excellent, with the Chef explaining the food and beverages. The staff seemed very passionate about their product which is wonderful to see. The reason it's not 5 stars relates to the portion size. While I did not anticipate leaving 'stuffed' as this is definitely not a plate full of rice and beans type place, I felt for $55 a person (not including drinks) that we should have at least left satiated. We (a group of 5 women) all left hungry. So - service, ambience, food was a 5. Just give us a little more .... read more

Joined my boss for dinner at this exquisite spot in the heart of the West Side. We were surprised that it was a fixed menu for $85, but she was down, so we went for it. I was excited to experience the food as the chef is a James Beard nominee. I told her about my time in Charleston eating at three different Sean Brock restaurants, and what an honor being a James Beard nominee is. I can't believe we have two here on the West Side (Black Sheep is the other)- it's nuts. We were served around 10 different menu options. Each one of them were hand-crafted works of art. They played upon Mexican and seasonal ingredients. Highlights included pork rolls, a beet salad, granita, cheese tarts, and the delicious final desert that I am still dreaming about - mango pavlova with strawberry sorbet. Yes! If you can afford it and you love food, I highly, highly recommend trying out the experience that is Las Puertas. read more

Buffalonians' know that there is a new vibe in and around Rhode Island St. And this new restaurant is certainly part of it. You might see this restaurant show on your Google search as a Mexican restaurant; but the flavors you will enjoy fall much further south ( as in South America) Think fresh, think Tapas', think complex.... With an atmosphere, and staff that make you feel as a guest in their home. The hand drawn mural hilites their families struggles to achieve this restaurant... The history will make you tear up with pride for the family Damn, that was a great evening, we'll be back! read more

Dined here Fri Oct 20th. Yes Yes I know that it's restaurant week in WNY and perhaps we should have taken advantage of that. But we were dining with good friends who were kid-free for the night and wanted to "get fancy". Plus they're vegetarians/pescatarians and we wanted an upscale place that didn't just specialize in steaks, etc. Thanks to a prior recommendation from a long-time resident of Buffalo who's definitely a foodie, I looked up Las Puertas. I called to ask about the menu, they said it's not available outside the restaurant - I was intrigued. The owner/chef Victor, on the phone with me, also said there's a plethora of options for non-meat eaters. We were sold. This place was AWESOME. No need to comment on ambience, location, service too much. All of that was just fine but this was all about the food. DRINKS: After trying a few of their different cocktails among us, the second round pick for ALL FOUR OF US was the Fall Blues - blueberry, thyme, tequila deliciousness. APPS AND ENTREES: We ordered Tapas style, and shared everything. Here's my favorite to my least favorite: Mushroom & grits - holy moly I love mushrooms and these had an insanely intense earthly flavor! Shrimp and corn tortellini - the all around favorite of the seafood eaters Guacamole - simple but oh so well done. One ingredient is spicy crunchy crickets, so we got them on the side. I ate them, they were good, tasted like the Indian snack mixes I had growing up that were usually served along chai (Indian milky tea). Burrata - super creamy and fresh cheese with yummy veggies Octopus - extremely fresh and tender. But not that exciting, compared to the other dishes. Scallops - was expecting a hot dish with a nice sear on the scallops, but these were more of a thinly sliced style with a cucumber based sauce. Tasted fine but not something I would order again. DESSERTS: Not A Peach - amazing! The only other time I had olive oil ice cream was the gelato version at Otto's Pizzeria (Mario Batali restaurant) in NYC. The Las Puertas version was just as good! The ONLY "ding" on my experience - I didn't really feel full with what we ate. Perhaps because the portions were small, but still worth the price. And some of the dishes were lighter than the others. Note that we didn't partake in the heartier large entrees, which at the time were a duck or pork option. So if you're looking for a big hearty Mexican meal this is not a great fit. But If you're looking for yummy unique food, this place is perfect! read more

Pride in service and creative food and menu all well explain in the context of the region the dishes are from: Always a delicious adventure.

It's funny left bank always was "that" restaurant in Rhode Island st but no more. This unassuming place is a hidden gem! Love that it's a smaller venue, chef came out and made great recommendations which were great. Recommend the pazole which had an incredible rich broth with just right amount of heat. The bone marrow left me wanting more and highly recommend anything with seafood. Limited menu but that's not a bad thing. Less is more, let the ingredient shine. Don't be afraid to order multiple dishes, you won't regret it. read more

We went there on Friday night to avoid the fish fry crowds and were looking forward to authentic mexican food. We left hungry. Not sure why all the 5 star ratings. While that was the case, the place is adorable, the owners mom is charming and made us feel very welcomed. The food was very tasty and not what you would think of for mexican. This restaurant is in a league of its own. I almost hate to say it but it doesn't fit in Buffalo. However, I will say, hope they never leave. The food is all so intricately prepared and finessed down to the very last details. I 100% recommend doing the tasting menu because that's how you get the best experience. I promise it is worth every dollar. Not just for the food but for the experience and exceptional service as well. Each food they prepare prepares you for your next course and all works very cohesively. On the topic of the service, Everyone was very attentive. Despite the restaurant being completely packed, our water glasses were never even close to halfway empty and the kind woman checking in on everyone put a smile on everybody's faces.
