Renee found us wandering the streets of Ensenada after 9 am looking for some good Mexican food and drink. Two ships were in port and Ensenada was still asleep! He assured us that by 930 his place would be ready to serve us some homemade guacamole and fresh tacos! We read the dismal Yelp reviews and were determined to make our own assessment based on his sales pitch. No need...he was spot on! As they scrambled to set up tables, our waiter brought us a tray of fresh guacamole, and chips with a delicious salsa alongside. The Margaritas were delicious with plenty of alcohol! And the three tacos, topped with guacamole, onions and cilantro were hot and fresh. We lured other couples in to give it a try. Las Kawas is an ok bar with dance club pretensions, as soon as we got there we were served blue shots that were pure juice :( we had Heinekens and sex on the beach and both were cold and refreshing. Service was good, at the end the bill was a bit sketchy but we had fun! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This bar in Mexico is the definition of a tourist trap. They lure you in with the promise of 2 free shots, which honestly taste like watered down juice nothing close to real tequila. While you're taking those shots, they're already rushing you to order more drinks without showing a menu, which should've been my first red flag. Me and my girl had two double shots of tequila and two margaritas nothing crazy. When we asked for the tab, this muscle-head bouncer-looking dude comes back and hits us with $95 USD. I'm from Vegas, I know overpriced when I see it, but I ate it because I wasn't paying close attention partly because they got performers constantly passing by the bar to distract you & other things. To top it off, when I pulled out my card to pay, dude tells me "we only accept cash". Crazy because we had just left Papas & Beer, which definitely takes cards. Since we didn't have enough cash on us, I had to go down the block to the nearest ATM all in Spanish and if it wasn't for my girl being fluent in Spanish and guiding me over FaceTime, I could've easily withdrawn the wrong amount. I saw the reviews and couldn't understand why anyone was surprised by the bad margaritas. We popped in and got a bucket of 6 Bohemia beers. Didn't ask the cost before ordering but it was only $36. I probably should have asked about the price before ordering. They only take cash so don't try to pay with a card. It was reasonably clean and the music was loud for a Thursday early afternoon. As everyone else has said, total bait and switch. They bring you a menu in pesos and then when it's time to close out, they end up saying US dollar. The total in pesos for our bill was $49 US and they said $85 US. Once we asked them to bring the menu They brought the US dollar menu which was different. Then they admitted they're giving us the cruise ship rate not the local rate. They did end up charging us correctly after we challenge them, however most will not challenge them and will be taken advantage of. Got off the ship and was walking around the stores when we were approached by this man who basically harassed us into buying a margarita and promised us free shots. We go inside and he immediately gives us blue shots. It smelled like juice and tasted like juice. It did not taste like there was any alcohol in the shots. We order mango margaritas and halfway through the margarita I started to get a headache. It did not taste like there was any alcohol in the margarita. I'm not sure if he is using the fake alcohol that is now trending that has the smell of alcohol but does not contain of any alcohol. Was just here on a cruise this last week, went here because it seemed like a fun place and they lure you with "free shots" like many others in that same area. Ordered 2 margaritas, 2 shots, chips and guacamole and a plate of 3 el pastor tacos and that bill was $79.00! More then I pay for sushi and drinks back home here in California! I noticed the menu prices had been scratched out or not legible and didn't really think to ask just as we were having fun and wanted lunch. Deserves 0 stars. The worst food I've ever had with such a high price tag. They reel in tourists with "free shots" and then sell you awful flavorless unseasoned food that takes at least an hour to come out. The "shots" are just juice with no alcohol and the food is bland. My significant other and I ordered fish tacos. They took over an hour to come out and when they did the tacos were LITERALLY CANNED TUNA fish tacos . They tastes so incredibly bad that we took a bite and couldn't eat anymore. For the 2 order of "fish tacos" with no sides and no drinks cost us $14. They'll also charge you an additional $10 for a basket of chips they bring out automatically without you asking. Def come here if you want some awful expensive food. Las Kawas was one of four bars I visited on the Ensenada bar tour. It is a solid tie for my 2nd favorite between here and it's brother bar, The Shot Factory. My favorite of all four was Dona Frida, and least favorite goes to Nink. Apparently Nink is a private bar also ran by Papas and Beer, and its pretty watered down. First things first, this Bar Tour was part of an excursion package offered to Carnival Cruise goers. We hopped off the ship on a sunny Sunday afternoon and hit the Tequila slopes. If you are a cruiser or even just someone visiting Ensenada for the night. Go to The Shot Factory for the shots that they light on fire. Hit Las Kawas for their chicken wings , they are unexpectedly good and their music selection! They kept us dancing the entire time. Finally you want to check in to Nink for their freakisly delicious margarita. Although each bar had something great to offer. I suggest you start and end your adventure at Dona Frida. They make their margaritas with Mezcal and you can taste the difference. The ambiance is super authentic, which sounds ridiculous saying that but you will see what I mean when you get there. It's a small, divey type bar with awesome service and a simple menu that can't be beat. I appreciated the music they were playing, the decor and the vibe. If you are ever in the area make sure to check all these cool spots out. They are literally all right next door to each other so it's an easy back and forth. I would have given 4 stars but I felt that each place fell short in a few areas, for example, extremely small restroom stalls, and no paper towels in the restroom. read more

Folks on the street corner will guide you to this location in lieu of Papas or Hussongs with the promise of free shots and free guacamole, neither of which are free. Keep your guard up! The "free" shots are pineapple juice and sweet and sour mix with blue food coloring. There is 0 alcohol in these shots. Mixed drinks are also very light on the alcohol. Any beer from this location will be 5x more expensive than the usual Ensenada haunts. Tacos are bland and way overpriced. When you get your check you will be paying for the free shots (which they will bring you multiple rounds of) and the free guacamole. This is clearly a hustle for the locals.
