Beautiful spot to take a break on the drive down to San Diego. Take a good look at the wildlife and view but watch out getting pooped on by birds! The entire floor is just bird poo... so don't stop unless you gotta if you hate bird poo. Don't let the seagulls see you with food cause they will crowd up your car even if you didn't feed them. lol As an animal person, I enjoyed being there to watch the wildlife. Just don't bring a super nice car there unless you don't care you are risking scratches and bird doo doo on your baby. read more

If you're scared of potentially damaging your car or getting bird turds on it, this isn't for you, or at least park at the periphery away from people who are clearly feeding the animals and not following the signs. Saw a guy feed the gulls and he was swarmed INSTANTLY. All over his car, perched on it, orbiting around it, flying towards him. For those who are scared of birds too, not a great place either lmao. But if you want to pull over and get a view of the beach and ocean, especially around sunset, it's quite a nice place. You can see the shrubbery and grasses growing along the water's edge too, along with the rocky denizens. Lots of ground squirrels. If they think you have food, they may hold your hand (at your own caution). There's also lots of little shrub birds living near the ground too and other song birds, mixed in with the large gulls. This is a great scenic spot! I finally had an opportunity to stop in the Camp Pendleton area traveling south on the Interstate 5. Right away, I can tell this place is very popular. There was quite a number of people there...birds and squirrels also in the mix. Gotta love nature for bringing us together!! I was a little disappointed that I didn't see any flowers at Las Flores View Point. From the distance, I think I saw both San Clemente Island and Catalina Island. It was too cloudy to tell. Overall, I enjoyed the beauty of the landscape and was able to settle into the peaceful atmosphere. This location definitely provides a relaxing setting for anyone looking to unwind...especially after a long drive. You'll have an appreciation for the natural beauty of the coastal region...that's for sure. read more

I have passed this turnoff at least a 100+ times and have never thought of stopping. I thought it would be funny to take a look. It's an interesting stop but as far as a view...well...you can see the ocean....oh and the train tracks. But the part that is wild, is this colony of squirrels who are not as afraid of humans or even dogs. Cako was able to come pretty close to one before he turned and scurried away. It is a nice place to take a break and stretch your legs. We saw a number of company people eating their lunch in their cars or going over notes. Worth a stop if you need to. read more

I have driven past this view point quite a few times on my drives to San Diego but never decided to stop here. Usually, I just zoom past the view point but on my last trip I was stuck in heavy traffic. I decided to stop by to take a break from the traffic and check out the view. Las Flores View Point is a small view point with only a few parking spaces for cars. It is only accessible if you are driving southbound on the 5 freeway towards Oceanside/San Diego. There is not much to see other than a view of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding areas. However, it's a great stop if you want to stretch while taking in the views. read more

Vista Point on the way to San Diego. It's a nice little break if you're into site seeing. Parking: there's about 10 slots and it's quite packed as people love to stop by to view the ocean. and it's free :P Atmosphere: nice weather. I like it whenever I stop by and the horizon is crispy clear and it was pretty clear this past Friday. Lucky me! I've driven past this place many times, and I finally took the time to stop by and enjoy the view. This place is accessible from the southbound 5 freeway. It's about a hundred meters north of the rest stop that lies along the same freeway. There is a nice view of the ocean, atop a hill that overlooks a section of Camp Pendleton. The drive twists and comes to a small parking area. The view for me was ok that day, as it was overcast and did not make for a dramatic photo opportunity. However, I can see this place getting beautiful around sunset. I took in the scenery for a few minutes, then continued on my journey southbound. It was a nice stop along the way. However, there are no amenities here, so I recommend stopping at the designated rest stop a hundred meters south of here if you need a restroom or snacks. read more

I like many others passed this on the way back from LA. Eventually one day I decided to be spontaneous and drop by as I was along and didn't have Mr. W by my side who usually drives. It was lovely looking at the water from where many stood. Though it definitely was PRETTY COLD that afternoon I went. Many seagulls flew around and did some laps while those who stopped by took pictures of the birds in flight and watched in amusement as they flew up and then landed once more. Was a good couple of colonies there. Driving in and out want a problem at all. You drive in the way the lane turned and then swing into a parking spot. Afterwards you reverse and then go back on the road to go back on the freeway. Is a pretty nice place to stop and then go. read more

There's really not much around since it borders Camp Pendleton and is clearly marked US Government Property but that's not a bad thing. It's the perfect place to stop get out of the car, stretch, do a little walking around, visit with the sea gulls and the fat little squirrels they all seem to be very friendly and looking for handouts. If you need a restroom there's one just a few miles up the road but if you don't this is a much better option. I stop by here every single time I'm out this way. It's been a favorite of mine for about 5 years! TONS of squirrels and seagulls. I think I actually checked into the place because Yelp for some reason does not recognize Vista Point as Vista Point. Vista Point is a hidden treasure for anyone who is traveling South on the 5 freeway and passed up this vantage point you are missing out. The sign for Vista Point is easily missed as you are driving 80 MPH south of the 5 while looking out for the CHP running Laser/Radar. Vista Point is located just past San Clemente so if you see signs for San Clemente get in the far right lane (slow lane) and look out for the small sign that says 'Vista Point,' you will not be disappointed that you did. At Vista Point you are able to view Camp Pendleton and the Pacific Ocean from an elevated position. As you are stretching your legs USMC tanks, Helicopters and personal transport vehicles will pass right below you. While we were there the U.S. Navy (my old employer) & the Marines were running combat drills utilizing all the cool toys I just described, they even waived at us as they flew by and/or drove by. At Vista Point signs are posted everywhere advising all visitors to not feed the squirrels and/or birds, but no one listens, nor did I. I actually was able to hand feed the squirrels part of a multi grain bagel from Starbucks. They would come up, stand on their hind legs and reach up and grab it from you. It was kind of cool feeling their little finger nails scratch against your extended finger as you were offering them food. They knew the drill that to get food for the human folk they had to be nice otherwise people would freak out and that is exactly what happened. At Vista Point there are no trash cans so make sure whatever you bring with you, you take with you, a little gust of air will blow right toward the Ocean and the plastic cup you brought & placed down for a second or two will now be floating around the Ocean for 20/30 years so please make sure you do your part to make sure that does not happen. There are many other and better places to stop at on the 5 for pictures of the landscape. The only interesting thing about this place is the amount of gulls and squirrels there are begging for your food. You can get a few good shots of that. It doesn't really offer anything else. If you need to stretch your legs before hitting up SD, this would be a good place to do so. read more
