They offer 7 freshly made sides you can pick from with all the usual favorites like rice, French Fries, coleslaw, Mac & Cheese and beans. Two other unique sides are Sweet Plantains and Yuca Fries. They offer 2, 3, & 4 piece meals which includes two sides. Also, in addition to soft drinks (Pepsi products) and ice tea try the Horchata, Mango and Jamaica drinks. Horchata is my favorite. The fried chicken is juicy and definitely different from KFC and Popeyes. The full menu includes chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets, and a spring mix salad.

They let you order your meal mixing fried and roasted pieces so I did. I also have tried the campero beans and cole slaw as side dishes. Prices are very reasonable. A 3 piece chicken meal with one side dish with self serve drink and tax runs about $13. Two piece meals are less of course. The chicken here tastes very good. As long as it is hot, the roasted version is seasoned and very juicy. The fried version had a nice seasoned crust and was also juicy inside. I think I liked the fried a little better but would be ok with either. Their sides are even better. My order of campero beans were hot and very flavorful. The cole slaw was cool and creamy with a rich taste. Those two were quality side dishes. This is the only outpost of Pollo Campero that I have visited. It remains to be seen if the other locations are consistent with this one. I have found that Golden Chick disappoints more than it succeeds. As of now, Pollo Campero is my fave of this type of restaurant.

My order: 5 piece spicy with Laynes sauce and ranch it ran about $14 for the meal. Chicken- very fresh they were definitely made to order for us. Very crunchy and juicy. Seasoning/Spice level- wasn't too spicy. More on the mild heat. I'm very sensitive to salty food these were highly salty. That was my only critique bc other than that they were delicious. They are also real tenders unlike canes which seem to be strips of chicken breast. Laynes sauce was decent. I tasted the black pepper. Paprika and definitely celery salt in there. Those note were very up front. The ranch was just ranch lol. The meal came with fries and some Texas toast. They also have shakes that's looked good but didn't try one this time. Now the story: Ok wow this place was an eye opener and had me highly curious my friend said u got to try Layne's chicken I'm like I had canes before. He said no Laynes. I'm like I never heard of that before. So we went since it sparked my interest we went and on the ride there I was wondering what came first? A new "chicken or the egg?" Thing. Lol. So I looked it up on AI and sure enough Laynes was in 94 and originated in college station TX. And canes. In 96 in NOLA. As we pull up to this location on 132 E Airtex Dr. you would never believe what was right next to this place. Yessss A Mother flipping Canes lol. I'm like are we on a batttle ground right now. lol. They literally have the same menu. And are neighbors. So now it was even more of a question which one is better? So it you are trying to decide: LAYNES - actual chicken tenters. Crunchy. Juicy. Way more flavor. Even though highly salty. Maybe it was just the spicy ones. I don't try the regular tenders. The do offer shakes here as well looked good but didn't try them. Always a plus for some shakes. Laynes is definitely a place to go to. Canes, Who's ur daddy? The answer to that is Laynes lol

The chicken fingers were a lot larger and I think hand battered, but definitely made to order. With that said all chicken finger/tender places (Cane's and Zaxby's) all went to way smaller size fingers/tenders around Covid time. That is my only complaint is the size of the fingers/tenders. Not sure if Layne's still hand batters or if they now use pre battered frozen product. Couldn't tell by looks. Size went down and price went up lol...3 piece spicy is what I ordered and $9.49 Hot and tasted great, good spice and I got the jalapeño ranch sauce..nice kick and sauce was great. Place is brand new and looks fresh and modern and clean. I will return but on a day that I am really hungry I'll have to order the 4 piece but at $11.40 it's pretty high.

We always order from the spicier side of menus, and there's no question when you get your food that they aren't playing around. The chicken is juicy, full of flavor, served on a perfect bun with cole slaw and a couple dill pickle slices. The lightly-battered, seasoned waffle fries are exactly what they should be. The woman who took our order was so nice it almost felt like a hug from your favorite aunt.

I remember the hype this place got as they started out and moved from their original spot to this new spot on Shepard. Now that they have inside seating, I figured it was time to check them out. I was in the area at a local bar with friends, and a few friends ordered Mico's through DoorDash. It looked and smelled so good that I decided I had to have it that night, but at the restaurant. I pulled up to what looks a new building. They share a lot with other businesses but I was able to get a parking spot easily. The restaurant is spacious with lots of seating. They also have bar seating by the register. When I looked around, I noticed alot of people waiting on food. It was a mix of food delivery drivers as well as patrons that had ordered and waiting. There was a customer at the counter going off on the employees and I got to commend the young staff for keeping their cool. That being said, the young staff was friendly and trying their best, but they were drowning and the mood in the place was off. Items were forgotten. People were not getting their food in the order of when they ordered. Four parties ordered after me, with similar items and everyone got their orders before mine. I think I was forgotten and only after one of the staff noticed me waiting did they come and look at my receipt. Time from ordering to receiving my food was close to 40 minutes. This is a hot chicken place that is trying to be somewhat fancy. I was served my food on a nice plated plate. Nice touch, but it felt off for the food being served here. They also give utensils in cloth napkins. No paper towels or napkins in sight. Hot chicken is messy and the cloth napkins was not doing it for me. I ended up up knife and forking my sandwich to keep the messy hands from happening. They also serve their fountain drinks in small cups filled to the brim with us. A few swigs and my drink was almost gone. For a place serving spicy food, a soda fountain with refills or readily available water should be available and out front. Now to the good part. The food was outstanding. I ordered the Chicken Sandwich at their hottest level which also came with a side. I got the waffle fries. The sandwich was voted one of the best dishes in the state by Texas Monthly and I can see why. It was a hefty sandwich with a large chicken breast seasoned to perfection. I always love when their is a little hangover of the chicken outside of the bun. The chicken was crispy but juicy inside. The heat was there but totally bearable with the cooling component of the delicious slaw on top. I usually pick pickles off sandwiches, but the pickles here were good and the acidity added a pleasant touch to the sandwich. The waffle fries were also excellent. They were the battered and seasoned kind which I love. The food most definitely saved the overall experience on my visit here. I will say it is one of the better hot chickens I have had in Houston. Now if they go back to their roots and not try to be fancy and do better on their customer service, I can see this place sticking around for a long time. With my experience, I don't see myself hurrying back anytime soon.

Hippo Burgers popped up on my Yelp search and was not too far away, so I bookmarked it. Could have went to the Popeyes near by, but I really had a taste for a burger. Reviews were solid, so I figured why not?! Drive was bumpy to HB, but that is typical for the Aldine area, so drive carefully! Parking lot was plentiful even during lunchtime, but I did arrive just before 11:30 so I may have missed the lunch break traffic. Still about half of the restaurant was filled up. The menu is straightforward and outlines the ingredients on the burger. Desiring a burger with bacon, I ordered the BLT Burger- without mayo added mustard. You will find that the burgers are not too overly inclusive with a bunch of toppings but include one ingredient that makes it unique enough to make a statement (i.e. bacon, mushrooms jalepanos...This gives HB time and focus to make an oustanding meaty and flavorful patty to showcase their burgers which gives it that homemade burger vibe. Plus the order came out quick! Portion size was generous and worth the price. Very tasty burger that will keep you full the rest of the day. I cannot forget the fries, which came out fresh and hot. A pinch of salt- just how I like them, which was the deciding factor for me to eat at HB versus driving back to training and risk my fries getting cold! I gladly indulged in every single bite of my burger and fries. Plus, I love that they have Pepsi versus Coke beverages. They sell one cup size for fountain drinks. Dining in? free refills! I also liked that the tables are spaced out and give people room to eat. Tables provided plenty of paper towels as well as you sink your teeth into your burger and possibly get a little undignified. No one will blame you. Good food deserves to be devoured and I most certainly will be back again to indulge accordingly.
