Let's start off with saying I am not a pro with working with wood or lumber. With that said, I have a great friend who's a few steps away from being a master craftsman. So if I get a hair up you know what he's there to assist, help or bail me out. I decide to replace the rotten out boards on my bridge that crosses a year round creek. Not an easy task to say the least. My first phone call to Larsen I get Chuck on the phone. He must have known I was green behind the ears. He had the patience of Jobe. I'm guessing through the whole process from first introduction to end of project probably 15-20 calls on my part. Every time Chuck was there to walk me through. These boards were not cheap, they were big and pretty expensive. I had order one to many, and from what my friend was telling me it had a slight curve in it. He said we wouldn't have used it because of the curve/bend. I could see it after it was pointed it to me so he said return it. I was surprised that they would. My buddy said to me, without even knowing Chuck or the Lumber Yard he said, "I've delt with lumberyards most of my life, a company that sells that quality of lumber is going to take it back, they want it right as much as the customer does." Holy moly he was right. Chuck kinda hemmed and hawed but I think he might've been just messing with me. A couple of days later the same driver who dropped all the wood off, what a nice guy he was, stellar performance on his part, came grabbed the beast and my account was credited. I used to be a big box store kinda guy but after having the kind of customer service from this company , I'll be thinking my trips to the cheapo are going to be slowing down considerably. read more

Larsen Lumber was ! I had been looking for a couple of weeks for a 100 7/16 inch wooden closet rod. It's been the annoyance of my existence, but thanks to Larsen Lumber my problem is solved! I called and spoke with a wonderfully pleasant guy named Sam. After informing him of my issue, he told me that they had just the fix. Upon arrival I spoke with Norman, and he cut my wood just right. Not only did he cut the pole perfectly, he also educated me on a few do's and dont's for the future as well as some additional wood closet rod info. Don't bother with this outfit. The counter staff is rude, understaffed and unprofessional. There were three clerks at the counter, two helping customers before me and one, who was sitting at a desk, that came out to answer the phone, instead of taking care of the customers that were waiting first. I was in line with one customer behind me. The customer behind me walked around the shelving and went to the opposite side of the counter. The clerk in front of me finished working with the customer he was helping out and I was next in line. As soon as I got to the counter he said hang and took a phone call instead. When he finished the call and he and I started to talk about what I needed, the other clerk interrupted him and said, pointing to the customer that came in after me, "we have other customers that are waiting in line". But when it comes time to get specific sizes of wood for special/custom applications, I don't have the proper tools (e.g large table saw) nor knowledge to get what I need. I called Larson in need of very specific size of wood. I spoke with Javier on the phone, he offered advice and the ability to cut what I needed. I got there and he was ready to help. Once the work order was issued, the employee was going to cut the piece for me said that it would be challenging. After a lot of thinking, he had an idea and the challenging rip cut worked out. Besides quality material, their staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Also one big advantage over buying your lumber over some of the Big Box stores, is that you can drive your vehicle right up to your material in their yard, and they will help you load it right up! These guys are great. I've been a contractor in San Jose for 22 years, but have recently moved to San Ramon. I had no idea where to go for QUALITY lumber in the area. I needed redwood fencing, so I started making calls. Even though there are lumber yards closer to me, just by the phone call alone I felt that Larson lumber would be my best bet. They didn't disappoint. Awesome customer service, and great looking lumber. I haven't had a chance yet to compare prices, but if you're a contractor, you know that if a lumber company has been around this long their prices will be competitive. I'll bet 70% of their median competition has gone out of business in the last fifteen years. That is beyond sad for anyone who grew up spoiled by Bay Area lumber yards. But this group has been great for longer than I've been alive. The 70% didn't die because the big boxes are better or cheaper. Big boxes ARE easier! Like a grocery store. But would you rather buy your fish from a monger or from Walmart, if the price is about the same? Oh, and the mongers get the good stuff. Oh yes, they do. I bought a chunk of redwood from these folks...after being referred to them by my local lumber yard...Think about that. I wasn't disappointed. The quality was outstanding for the grade I purchased. I felt they upped me a grade. Nice wood. Great service on top. They helped me figure out what I'd need, and I ended up with pretty minimal waste. Getting great wood is easy here. And bite that lip. Their retail shop was well laid out inside as well. If I was working on a weekend wood project, they had all I'd need. So if I was to buy wood for a project, I'd just go here unless I was combining a plumbing/drywall/electrical project for my weekend tasks. And it's usually just a task for me to get out of bed, let alone combine projects like that. You have to shop at a great wood place before you understand why you would want to. This is a great wood place. Nothing sucks worse than coming home from the box store with a piece of crud. Box stores have mostly crud. read more

Larsen Bro's sells decently priced quality building materials. What I love most is the ability to call and place an order over the phone and they deliver for a fee. Juan's their delivery guy and he arrives masked and very carefully and efficiently unloads ordered items (except cement bags and they forget to tell you that the buyer must unload the 60lb bags of cement). Recently there's been a shortage on fencing boards and when I called they suggested I call every two days. I called two days later and I got lucky. They had 3 units of 100 6' fencing boards come in and I scooped up the second unit. I feel like I got lucky. I'm very happy with the quality of their lumber. Hardware however is very pricey. It'll be lots cheaper at Home Depot if you have the time and patience to shop there. read more

Called in my order. When I walked in the door to pay for it the guy asks, "were you given a price" which immediately made me wonder what do you mean was I given a price". Isn't the price the price? Well apparently at Larsen Brothers it's not. Then I pay for it thinking that was strange; I walk outside with my ticket and hand it to the delivery/loader person and he says you will have to wait 15 to 20 minutes for me to find it, cut it and load it. Ummm, didn't I call in my order already hence the reason I called in so I wouldn't have to wait a long time! Ok, so I he comes over with the fork lift to my vehicle and just stands there and lets me pick up each piece of wood get splinters and load it myself. Literally the guy stands there with his gloves on and doesn't even offer to help, look for straight and good pieces. NOTHING. Unbelievable lack of customer service. Not sure how this place has been in business for so long. The part about whether I was quoted a price or not bugged me so I finally figured out where we went the last time in San Leandro to buy this certain type of wood and it was Woods Unlimited. Just for grins I called them asked them for their price on the SAME exact wood I purchased at Larsen and Woods Unlimited was $.26 cents per foot cheaper. Can't believe it!
