It's a simple motel but it's clean, inexpensive ,cozy, friendly and close to all Great Barrington attractions. I have been coming here for years as well as many of my friends and colleagues at work. Great doughnutt shop next door for coffee in the morning too!

now let me explain my five stars on this one... clearly this is not a 5 star in the 5 star sense of those big fancy we have everything tall towers of hotels this is a roadside motel in small town America you park the car right outside your door (of course its only one level) you have a room and a bathroom now thanks to the popularity of this small town Great Barrington (in fact it is listed as one as in #1 best in Smithsonian) so with that comes price nothing in the Great town of Great Barrington comes cheap but it does come nice and that is exactly what the Lantern house is thanks to our family owning land in the neighboring town of Monterey since before I was born ...Great Barrington has been in my life forever So one stunning weather day we stay at the Lantern Hasu is super friendly on the phone we made our reservation right on the phone easy peasy we arrive Hasu greets us warmly we get a nice old fashioned REAL key on a plastic key chain oh yes indeed 1973 come to me bring me my memories of when I was just a small child and Great Barrington looked huge our clearly 1970s styled room was spotless and I mean SPOTLESS clean knotty pine walls, plaid curtains orange and brown themed carpet and bed spreads go there knowing time has stood still and you will have the most enjoyable time my mattress was big thick and very comfy, small fridge and even a microwave in the room! remember I said GB is pricy make a couple of your own little meals and save on some cash there is a lovely pool and a gazebo on the front lawn you can sit out there and just enjoy.

five stars again, thank you marriott…read more just checked out and made it home, wanted to post my review. every part of the process was great. check in was ez and she was so friendly, I saw her down at breakfast the next morning, great hustle! Jane of all trades! room was well done, clean, as expected. working microwave and fridge helped this family getaway not become a meltdown moment. losing an hour was rough, but still had a nice breakfast, plenty of time to enjoy the amenities. kids loved the pool, I didn't dip, but I was wet enough from the rain on the mountain, which is 5 minutes away. actually, tons of stuff is right around this property. they also have a game room, rare these days, no pinball alas. I'll be back , book it

But the Marriott standard is not being checked or upheld. I'm lifetime platinum. I've stayed roughly 900 nights in Marriott properties. I have a baseline to compare. 1) clean towels absolutely stunk. Like sat for days in the washer to mold and then dry stench. Getting them wet made it 199x worse. 2) had to beg for the bedding for the fold out couch. Was told it was under the tv. I checked 4 times. Even went back to check. Not there. Had to beg to get. 3) came at an odd hour. Son and I looking for a snack. The market was literally bare. All shelves spread out with original skittles and potato chips. That's it. Freezer section was off. Nothing in there but a towel for moisture. Soda and drinks were old and Pepsi product - any self-respecting Marriott fan knows they ended their 34-year relationship with Pepsi for Coke. That brand standard is not being enforced. 4) in the room remote controls don't work, end tables plugs don't have power, lights unplugged and their cords are behind headboards. Dishwasher full. Just overall a miss. This is likely all unknown to corporate and on the operator. Maybe it was a glitch. But there's so many options in the area I am going to continue to find new and different. Positives: morning shift folks were lovely and breakfast was hot and fresh.

Our room was super charming -- the electric fireplace got a lot of use -- and the bed was extremely comfortable (I'm seven months pregnant and slept better in the bed here than I've been sleeping at home!) I also loved the thoughtful little touches, like the coffee and tea station in the dining room that included homemade cookies and a little bowl of chocolates for guests to dip into in the afternoons/evenings. Breakfast was excellent and came in courses, which was a fun novelty. Also, the elderly black lab in residence is a sweetheart (very unobtrusive and quiet, as befits a hospitality professional, but also a very polite receiver of enthusiastic head-petting for those so inclined). I've been actively recommending the Wainwright Inn to my friends and family, and it completely deserves the five stars on Yelp. (My only tiny criticism: I wish they offered actual shampoo and conditioner, instead of the combination two-in-one stuff, which left my hair pretty fried and hard to untangle. If you have much hair you should definitely bring your own conditioner to avoid my fate!)

The property is so inviting and cosy and comfortable - we didn't want to leave! We booked room 5 which was very spacious, with a gorgeous bathroom. Bed was super comfy. And I don't know what they put in those olive oil muffins but they're heaven! Just do yourself a favour and stay here! All I can say is that I have never never never encountered as nice of a place - and as nice of hosts, than at Granville House. We were lucky enough to score a room here during the 2021 holiday season and we took it without high expectations - but holy snowflake Batman! This place is amazing! And I had the pleasure of meeting both owners and connecting as nice easy going human beings. What a find! Our first night was especially special because we got a size-able snowfall! So I spent quite a bit of time downstairs by the fireplaces, playing billiards, listening to vinyl records, and under the front porch space heaters. Magical is a word I might use but it's inadequate. I think I prefer transcendental. I tend to give emphatic reviews seldom - only when a place really impresses me (or disappoints me). All I can say about this place is please don't book the nights I want next year!! And in the meantime - go find out what you are missing!!

No coffee maker or vending machine or breakfast or any sort of place to hang out. It seems haunted or abandoned, and it's super badly maintained. Scratches and chipped paint, dirty floors, wrinkled up rugs, holes in the wall. Even the fire pit is "no longer working". I can't believe this is even a place that can be paid for by tourists. We also found a bug in our bed the first night and switched rooms. They were less than empathetic. There are also "locals" that stay here for long stretches under some sort of mental or physical welfare situation, so be aware if you choose to stay. There is some operation between this motel and the local law enforcement to put up people in need. There is also NO HOUSEKEEPING SERVICE. they don't service the room while you are staying!!! No fresh linens, no garbage clean up, no sheets changed, nothing. I can't believe that. I hope this place gets knocked down and rebuilt. What a joke. The only nice thing here was the new retro mini fridge. I could buy one of those for a nights stay, though. The new owners should be ashamed of themselves for renting this place in the condition it's in. It's not even fit for paying guests. Also... a 20 inch tv? In 2025? Come on. Barely any outlets in the room. No closets. Only some rooms have suitcase stands. There is also no coffee maker in the room so you can't make coffee, tea, or anything. One of the worst hotels I've ever been to.

Second, don't believe the photos. Property is not upgraded and in much poorer condition than advertised (especially the rooms). Very old bathroom fixtures, window AC unit kept turning off and on, stains on lamp shade, light scones in bathroom do not work, cracks/stains in wallpaper (see pics). Our room door would not lock with the key they provided. (It would not even lock with the skeleton key the staff member tried). We reported this and were told it would be fixed the same day. When we returned it was not fixed. Ensuring that the room doors can all be locked is a basic safety standard. This was not upheld. Not only that, their staffing levels is also below industry standards. No one is reachable, not by phone, not by presence on the property, not by email. We came in around 9 on our last night for example. The main door to the inn was opened, didn't even have to use the key to enter (is this even safe?). Not one staff person was on site for us to follow up re: door. We were told we would receive a text about the door that morning. We did not. Tried calling and emailing and got no response. We found this very unprofessional and inhospitable. Do not waste your time or money to stay here.
