We had an absolutely wonderful stay here! The best stay for the money I've had in a long time. The building is lovely and very well-maintained, a manageable walk into the little downtown. Our room was super charming -- the electric fireplace got a lot of use -- and the bed was extremely comfortable (I'm seven months pregnant and slept better in the bed here than I've been sleeping at home!) I also loved the thoughtful little touches, like the coffee and tea station in the dining room that included homemade cookies and a little bowl of chocolates for guests to dip into in the afternoons/evenings. Breakfast was excellent and came in courses, which was a fun novelty. Also, the elderly black lab in residence is a sweetheart (very unobtrusive and quiet, as befits a hospitality professional, but also a very polite receiver of enthusiastic head-petting for those so inclined). I've been actively recommending the Wainwright Inn to my friends and family, and it completely deserves the five stars on Yelp. (My only tiny criticism: I wish they offered actual shampoo and conditioner, instead of the combination two-in-one stuff, which left my hair pretty fried and hard to untangle. If you have much hair you should definitely bring your own conditioner to avoid my fate!) read more

Thank you Chris & Barbara for being awesome innkeepers! I visited the inn for one night. I found this spot online researching between TripAdvisor and Yelp. All the great reviews and photos led me here. I was on a New England road trip passing thru Massachusetts with two relatives visiting from out of the country. I booked the West Wing (via telephone), two bedrooms separated by a hallway leading to a private bathroom. 1 king master bedroom + separate 2 twin bedroom. We arrived at 4p on Thursday before Memorial Day. Chris greeted us, offered us coffee, tea & port wine and showed us the rooms. We took a leisurely 10 min stroll to downtown. Walked around town (most stores were closed by 5:30p) Had a delicious dinner at the Prairie Whale followed by a stop to Soco ice cream shop and then a walk back to the inn. Slept great, free wifi, quiet bedrooms. Air conditioning in each bedroom kept the room nice and cool. Bathroom was comfortable, stall shower, hair dryer provided. Plenty of towels, soap, shampoo, lotion. I posted a bunch of photos too of the rooms and inn. Three course breakfast served between 8:30-9:30a the next morn (other arrangements can be made for earlier or later breakfast on request). Fruits and Greek yogurt, followed by poached eggs, toast and potatoes and ending with homemade banana bread (see photos). Juice (grapefruit or orange or apple) and coffee and water in a beautiful dining room. I would most definitely stay here again. read more

Barb and Chris run a fabulous operation, all the more amazing given the challenges imposed upon by Covid. We ventured out for our first getaway since March to celebrate a birthday, and this in was perfect. Chris gave us great dining recommendations for each of our three nights. We had a room in the cottage which made for a nice, isolated Covid friendly accommodation and it had tea, coffee, mini fridge and microwave so you could have do it yourself meals there. The breakfast each day was delicious with Chris delivering it to us in the cottage one morning. We will look to return, maybe for next year's birthday. read more

My girlfriend and I stayed here in the middle of the week and were the only guests. Chris and Barbara still treated us royally with delicious breakfasts and a consistently running fire in the shared room. They also had good tips for Berkshires activities. They did some Google research for us when we asked for specifics. Above and beyond. They also were very accommodating to my girlfriend's gluten allergy - provided multiple breakfast options and also tailored desserts. The room itself was very comfortable with plenty of amenities. This is an absolutely lovely place to stay in Great Barrington. The hosts, Chris and Barb, were so gracious. The inn is extremely well kept. In the evenings, I sat in the living room chatting with the people with whom I was with. (It is so much nicer than sitting in a bedroom.) Hot water for tea, coffee and cookies were available all the time in the dining room. Sherry and port were available in the living room. A word about the cookies: Barb made them and they were probably the best homemade cookies I ever had. A hearty breakfast was served starting with fresh fruit. Then there were omelets the first morning and thick French toast the second. Bacon and rolls were included. Breakfast was enough so that we had no need to stop for lunch! The inn is well situated in the town. A lot of restaurants were within walking distance or a short drive. When we visit this area again, we will definitely stay here! read more

My family and I stayed at the Wainwright Inn for the last two nights and we all agreed that it was wonderful! We are so glad that we didn't stay at some hotel without personality or character. The building is beautiful and I am already missing the adorable and spacious suite I shared with my parents and sister. The Innkeeper, Marja, and her husband take their roles to heart, and we were welcomed openly! Marja even took extra pains to create delicious vegan alternatives to the breakfasts that my omnivorous family enjoyed. I am really accustomed to people making light of my vegan diet and just expecting me to cope with less, but she went the extra mile with tofu scramble, potatoes, waffles, cakes, and even soymilk for my tea! My mother is already planning on getting the ladies in her book club to head out to the Wainwright Inn and I know that I will recommend it to anyone looking for a little haven in the Berkshires! read more

The Wainwright Inn is, quite simply, the roomiest, friendliest, and quietest B&B we have stayed at in years. I agree with everything that's been written here about the soaps, the sherry, the teas, the port, the innkeepers, the delicious breakfast, the choice location, the WiFi, the gardens, and the overall warmth and charm of the place. Marja and Robert are truly kind-hearted, generous people (as noted in almost all of the other reviews) so I will focus on a few of our own revelations about staying at the Wainwright. First, Google Maps will send you to the corner of Route 7 and South Street where you will not find the Wainwright. (There are two large funeral homes there instead.) Do not despair. Turn your car around and head south on Route 7 two more blocks (past the Dunkin Donuts). The Wainwright is at the corner of Route 7 and Pope Street with plenty of parking around back. Next, the innkeepers have no problem accommodating guests with food allergies. Just be sure to mention something before you arrive. Our breakfast included a smoothie course in between the juice-and-warm-apple-cake course (with 6 juices to choose from) and the main dish (ours was waffles with sautéed apples and bacon). The smoothie packed a punch with five fruits plus carrots and kale! Also, and this is for early risers out there (like us). There is a Keurig coffee maker in the kitchen and K-cups that Marja fills with her own delicious ground coffee. So if you need a cup at 7 a.m., go for it! There's fresh milk in the 'fridge. And have another cup if you like. We had our coffee in our room and even went for a little walk before breakfast, which is served between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Lastly, the Wainwright oozes with history. When you look at the brick structure from the outside and imagine it without the porch and without the addition on the back and without some of the Victorian touches here and there, you see a building that truly dates back to the 1760s. The Wainwright had a front-row seat to history when General Henry Knox and his men defied all odds by transporting 60 tons of cannons by oxen from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston during in the winter of 1775-76. The column went right by the Wainwright, which was a tavern back then, and I had no problem picturing Colonists in the front drawing room enjoying a flagon or two of ale. read more

The Wainwright Inn has become one of my favorite places on earth. Robert, Marja and Darryl always welcome us in as part of the family and immediately there is warmth and laughter. As always the breakfasts were phenomenal. Lisa and I just spent Labor Day weekend there and it was just what the doctor ordered. We spent hours on the porch reading, playing cribbage and watching the classic cars drive by. We explored the area, ate great food, picked up real estate brochures and immersed ourselves in the Berkshires. On Sunday night a group of the guests got together with Robert, Marja and Darryl and we hung out on the porch eating and drinking and laughing. We did not want to leave but we are now home relaxed, re-charged and ready to face the working world again. Thank you Wainwright Inn. We are already planning our next trip! read more

To begin, I'd just like to say I have nothing to compare this to since it's our first B&B. However, I gotta say this was more than just a room and breakfast, it was a wonderful experience. Our innkeepers, Marja and Robert, were beyond friendly, accommodating, and just delightful to speak with. The breakfasts were delicious! The lunch/dinner spots recommended surpassed our expectations. We ate at the Barrington Brewery and Gypsy Joint, both fantastic! The fireplace room was cozy and inviting. Very romantic. The conversations with Marja and Robert really made this stay an experience to remember. Robert, thank you for the beer discussions... AND THE PLINY!!! I'm sending you over a bottle of an IPA I find to be just as incredible. Also from the West Coast. You must taste it! We are 100% coming back and we're bringing friends! I stayed here with friends for a weekend of cycling during the Memorial Day weekend. The inn is located on Main St. and is about a 5 minute walk to great dining options. We stayed in the carriage house which is a bit further away from the main street and is very quiet (if you are bothered by street noise). The inn is an old house built in 1776 and has old world charm. The rooms are clean and cozy. The innkeepers Chris and Barbara are very friendly and make you feel like you are staying with friends or family rather than a business. They also cook delicious homemade breakfast in the morning. My sister and I just stayed here for the weekend because we were visiting family in Great Barrington. We stayed in the Anna Carriage House. Everything about the Wainwright Inn and Barbara and Chris is amazing. We arrived very late at night on Friday and Barbara and Chris accommodated our arrival at 11pm. The room was very warm and cozy but spacious. The decor was beautiful and true to the history, yet stylish and chic. The beds were very comfortable and the whole space was welcoming. There was WiFi, (in a town where cell phone service is not guaranteed), cookies, wine, coffee, and tea in the Carriage House. It is actually quiet and dark when you sleep, so there is no way to not get a great night's sleep! The very best part of the Wainwright Inn is breakfast. The first day, we were served a fluffy chive omelette with bacon and berries on the side and the most delicious banana bread. I didn't think it could get any better, but the next day, we had french toast, and the bacon again (note: I am mostly vegetarian and rarely eat pork. This bacon was INCREDIBLE and there was no way I would pass it up). Anyway, I have nothing negative to say about the Wainwright Inn. Barbara and Chris are very friendly and offered some hiking suggestions that turned out to be great! The price cannot be beat. There are many B&Bs to choose from in the Great Barrington area, but I will stay at the Wainwright Inn every time I visit Great Barrington, and I highly recommend this inn to all! read more

A perfect choice for a Berkshires visit. Rooms are pleasant and very comfortable without being fancy. The hosts are charming, and eager to make your stay perfect. They are happy to adjust to guests's preferences and dietary requirements. Wainwright Inn is a plush, upscale B&B, with gourmet breakfasts and a wonderful welcoming vibe. My husband and I stayed in the Edison Room and loved it. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room and bathroom were both a good size. The whole place is in immaculate shape. We were so delighted with our stay for my birthday weekend June 2015. The new owners are terrific and they've picked up where the old owners left off. The food was delicious and they were very personable, yet not intrusive. I'm going to see James Taylor this weekend at Tanglewoods and would've liked to stay there again, but since its a last minute trip for me (my sister gave me a ticket!) we are stayed elsewhere - glad to hear its booked for their sake and anyone staying there will not be disappointed! read more

5-Stars all the way. Super nice place to stay. Very clean and lovingly restored yet keeping the nostalga and romance that once was. Inn keeper Marja (MAR-eee-ah) is super charming and keeps the inn in immaculate condition. Breakfasts are wonderful and the coffee is great. We stayed on the 2nd floor and had access to the wonderful front porch. Working fireplaces and large rooms make this Inn a must stay. The carriage house is a 2-bedroom kitchenette suite that is fabulous and suitable for long stays for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. I could see booking an entire month and staying a while. Highy recommend! read more

We've stayed here 3 times over Memorial day weekend, and love it. We come to GB to road cycle with our club each year for three days, and Marja and Robert's place is by far the best in town. It is close to all the restaurants and shops, the rooms are nicely appointed, the bfast is delicious and filling and Marja and Robert are super informative about other nearby activities to check out and are super friendly. My wife and I just returned from a marvelous four nights in the Berkshire Wing room at the Wainwright. We were extremely comfortable and enjoyed the perfect location within walking distance of the restaurants and shops of Great Barrington. Delicious, well-rounded breakfasts (homemade baked goods, fruit, and then a "main dish" like an omelette, scrambled eggs, french toast or waffle) always got our days off to a good start, and port and sherry were available in the front room (in beautiful antique glasses!) for a night cap. Marja is a perfect innkeeper, friendly and knowledgeable but never intrusive. A note to my fellow tea snobs - there's an excellent array of teas available with breakfast, from hefty Irish Breakfast and London Cuppa blends to a more delicate Earl Grey and also herbal and green varieties. Also, a note to my fellow internet addicts - the wifi signal is strong and steady even on the third floor. We look forward to visiting again in future. read more
