    Fire pit and driveway

Over the past two years we have stayed at our fair share of motels in the Berkshires while looking for a home. The Briarcliff Motel is far and away the cleanest and most charming. Immediately after turning off the road and onto their drive you feel like you are coming somewhere a little more special than other motels. Rhonda, the hotel manager really welcomes each guest and makes them feel at home. Her adorable puppies are like shadows always following behind her. Have I mentioned that this is a very dog friendly motel, each furry friend welcomed to the hotel as additional member of your traveling party. The hotel rooms are somewhat basic but large and clean. My only real knock on the hotel though, are the TVs (yes I know I should be hiking and not watching the idiot box) BUT why even have them if they are going to be the size of a laptop screen? There is a fire pit for all to enjoy that comes on around sun set just steps away from your door. The breakfast, though basic, covers the majority of continental bases, and whatever they don't have Rhonda is willing to help figure out. Don't miss resting your bones at this special Berkshires Gem. One thing to note: the walls on this motel are very thin (somewhat of an unfortunate motel standard I have found) so if you aren't an early riser you may want to avoid the rooms directly next to the lobby/breakfast area.

We had a wonderful stay at The Briarcliff Motel in Great Barrington,Massachusetts. In the Berkshires near the Norman Rockwell Museum. Comfy beds, thick towels, a nice hot shower. Very clean and welcoming. They welcome dogs and even had a dog run chain in the front so our dogs were able to walk around outside with their leashes attached to the long chain. I was enjoying the morning and the manager put the fire pit on for our enjoyment. So thoughtful! It's a five star stay!

My husband and I stayed at Briarcliff Motel after visiting the Norman Rockwell Museum and the Hancock Shaker Village. It is convenient to both. The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. The decor was a contemporary colonial with Scandinavian influence. The bathroom was updated and had a European feel. The breakfast was great - not the typical vending type food. There were homemade scones and fresh baked poppyseed coffee cake - yum! The view was nice of the nearby mountain with fall leaves. The one odd thing about the room was that one area of the room had no furniture. I did have what I needed, but the arrangement seemed odd. Also just a minor problem was TV volume could not be adjusted on the remote. The Internet was sporadic, but the staff was working to solve the issue. The staff was very nice. I would recommend a stay if you are in the area of Stockbridge MA.

Read a couple of critical reviews and was somewhat surprised because my experience was quite different. When reviewing and rating a business I try and compare it to other similar businesses that I may or may not have patronized. For example, if I order a steak in a diner and it's really good, that will be reflected in the rating. If I was to compare it to Peter Luger, however, my rating would be way lower. Same with a motel. I have stayed at Ritz Carltons before and they are solid 5 Star performers. Does that mean the Briarcliff should be 1 Star? No, not at all. So when I compare them, I do so based on other similar places I have stayed and clearly, they are superior. The owners took what was undoubtedly a run down 1960s era strip motel, modernized it and made it really cool and interesting. Ecclectic and rustic touches abound, adding to a warm and comfortable ambiance. Owners and staff could not have been more accommodating or friendly. We actually had a prior last minute schedule change and they went out of their way to assist us. They even gave us blankets for our ill-fated trek to the fire pit to have a glass of wine. Word of advice: When it's -5 degrees a fire pit is not going to do much to keep you all that warm. Cool touch though. The room and common area were really nice and inviting. Small touches like little signs and photographs were placed in various locations adding a bit of interest and humor. Unlike many photographs I have seen of other motels, the ones on here really do tell the Briarcliff's story quite well. If you are looking to be nestled in the lap of luxury there are certainly better choices, although they may be quite a distance from Great Barrington. But if you want to stay in the area, The Briarcliff is a solid choice. We were more than pleased. You will be too.

We cannot say enough about this motel and about Rhonda! The eclectic vintage vibe of a classic roadside motel and the friendliness of Rhonda and her adorable dogs were perfection! We will definitely be planning another stay soon!

The rooms were clean although a little outdated. I think they were striving for '60s and the succeeded. Pricey for what you got.

Our room was super charming -- the electric fireplace got a lot of use -- and the bed was extremely comfortable (I'm seven months pregnant and slept better in the bed here than I've been sleeping at home!) I also loved the thoughtful little touches, like the coffee and tea station in the dining room that included homemade cookies and a little bowl of chocolates for guests to dip into in the afternoons/evenings. Breakfast was excellent and came in courses, which was a fun novelty. Also, the elderly black lab in residence is a sweetheart (very unobtrusive and quiet, as befits a hospitality professional, but also a very polite receiver of enthusiastic head-petting for those so inclined). I've been actively recommending the Wainwright Inn to my friends and family, and it completely deserves the five stars on Yelp. (My only tiny criticism: I wish they offered actual shampoo and conditioner, instead of the combination two-in-one stuff, which left my hair pretty fried and hard to untangle. If you have much hair you should definitely bring your own conditioner to avoid my fate!)

All I can say is that I have never never never encountered as nice of a place - and as nice of hosts, than at Granville House. We were lucky enough to score a room here during the 2021 holiday season and we took it without high expectations - but holy snowflake Batman! This place is amazing! And I had the pleasure of meeting both owners and connecting as nice easy going human beings. What a find! Our first night was especially special because we got a size-able snowfall! So I spent quite a bit of time downstairs by the fireplaces, playing billiards, listening to vinyl records, and under the front porch space heaters. Magical is a word I might use but it's inadequate. I think I prefer transcendental. I tend to give emphatic reviews seldom - only when a place really impresses me (or disappoints me). All I can say about this place is please don't book the nights I want next year!! And in the meantime - go find out what you are missing!!

A Community Venue Changed…read more The Egremont Barn, now operating as Buttonball Barn, was once a cornerstone of local music and community gathering. Because of our long-standing connection to the space, my husband and I chose it for our wedding celebration, placing our deposit with the previous owners, who were professional and supportive throughout the process. After the property changed ownership, we still proceeded with our event in October. This celebration held particular significance, as my father was seriously ill at the time, and we were grateful he was able to attend. Unfortunately, our experience with the new ownership raised serious concerns about professionalism, transparency, and respect for both clients and staff. On the day of the event, the owner attempted to impose additional charges not outlined in our contract. This included a demand for a $500 fee for using a room to get ready--a space she had explicitly told me I could use earlier in the day, noting it was acceptable despite the building being under construction. While I was getting ready, she entered the room while my mother and a family friend were assisting me and removed a rug from beneath them, stating that I "wasn't supposed to use the room all day." I chose not to address this at the time in order to preserve the tone of the day. Throughout the event, the owner was also openly drinking at the open bar, which had been paid for by my father. As the night concluded, she insisted that I personally break down the entire venue either immediately or first thing the following morning--despite knowing I had family visiting--or I would be charged for a cleaning crew. This expectation had not been communicated beforehand and was not included in the contract. When I suggested discussing it the next day, she continued to press the issue and confronted my husband, who attempted to redirect the conversation. To avoid further escalation, my friends and I cleaned the venue that night--while I was still in my wedding dress. She later stated that she would retain space heaters I had purchased in exchange for waiving the disputed room fee. When I noted that none of these charges or arrangements were contractually agreed upon, she responded, "I'm expensive, and I'm not in the contract either, honey," in reference to her being casted on The Real Housewives of New York City. Additionally, her conduct toward long-standing staff members--many of whom had supported the venue for years--was concerning and contributed to an atmosphere that felt transactional rather than community-centered. Some of those staff members have since left the venue. What was most troubling was the timing and context. The attempts to extract additional money occurred at the end of a wedding celebration involving a seriously ill parent, placing unnecessary stress on a family during an already significant moment. The Egremont Barn once represented collaboration, music, and mutual respect. Under its current ownership, that spirit appears to have shifted toward aesthetics and revenue at the expense of community and care. I encourage readers to proceed with caution, ask detailed questions, and ensure all expectations are clearly documented in writing before booking events there.

That should've been the first red flag. Second, don't believe the photos. Property is not upgraded and in much poorer condition than advertised (especially the rooms). Very old bathroom fixtures, window AC unit kept turning off and on, stains on lamp shade, light scones in bathroom do not work, cracks/stains in wallpaper (see pics). Our room door would not lock with the key they provided. (It would not even lock with the skeleton key the staff member tried). We reported this and were told it would be fixed the same day. When we returned it was not fixed. Ensuring that the room doors can all be locked is a basic safety standard. This was not upheld. Not only that, their staffing levels is also below industry standards. No one is reachable, not by phone, not by presence on the property, not by email. We came in around 9 on our last night for example. The main door to the inn was opened, didn't even have to use the key to enter (is this even safe?). Not one staff person was on site for us to follow up re: door. We were told we would receive a text about the door that morning. We did not. Tried calling and emailing and got no response. We found this very unprofessional and inhospitable. Do not waste your time or money to stay here.
