Jim's Auto Care - Pricing estimate showing how they were going to charge $3k

Kept having to call in, finally got through, was told he'd call me right back... never did. Eventually had to show up in person. The big issue was I had them check out what was making a scrunching noise once in a while. They said it was the control arm bushings. Quoted me $3,233.14 to install new assemblies on both sides.I looked it up and everyone was saying it should cost between $700-$1400 for my car - both sides, full assemblies. So I called around and the very next shop I called quoted me $800 for the same job - 4x less! BUT IT GETS WORSE... I take it to this other shop, and they bring me to the back and show me that there isn't a thing wrong with my bushings. No cracks, tears, slop, and the frame isn't sitting low or anything. The shop then demonstrated that the sound was my struts. So Jim's Auto tried to charge me 4x for a repair my van didn't even need.

They did the job just fine (at about $2,000), but after getting my car back I noticed that the center console was very haphazardly put back together as well as the drivers side door window control panel was completely busted. I brought my car back three separate times, 2-3 days each, to get this fixed and not only did they not fix it, but they refused to take any responsibility for it and blamed any and all damage on my very minimal phone mount. I also was never able to directly talk to either the manager/owner or whoever actually worked on the car, I was only able to talk to the "middle man" of the shop.

Dropped the car off told them the problems and mentioned, when braking, the car pulled a little to the left. Later they called with a diagnostic fee which seemed a little high but wanted it fixed. Someone called back the next day told me they had changed the oil and recharged the air conditioning and found leaks at both Schrader valves which they replaced (part of the diagnostic fee I imagine) and I needed $2000 worth of brake work, (front pads and rotors, rear shoes and drums, front calipers, BG brake system service). My response was, "that is a third of what the car was worth, put it back together and the car will be picked up. A total of $2875.81 of work and parts were declined by me. " Just to be on the safe side, two weeks later the same vehicle was taken to another auto repair shop to have the brakes checked, their receipt says "Inspect brakes, approximately 50% -OK". The brakes are working fine. There is probably a large gap as to what is needed for vehicle repairs and what the manufacturers suggests and how much money you have.

I have taken my cars to Fred for over 20 years. I drove my 2006 Elantra to 304,000 miles, mainly because Fred maintained it for most of its life. My 2023 Elantra has 50k on it and was recently serviced by Fred. I had a fuel induction/injector cleaning service (I think that is what it is called lol) and the car is running as good as the day it was brand new. I highly recommend Fred and his crew. They are amazing and their prices are fantastic.
