Average sushi at best! Ordered three very different rolls and all were room temperature - not what I look for in fresh sushi-grade fish! Also, the salmon was pale. It tasted fine but did not inspire confidence. Miso soup very average.
Their delivery area is about ten square blocks, but all south of Dundas to Bloor. I live at Rogers (which is just as far away from Dundas as Bloor) and they would not deliver to me. This arbitrary and ridiculous rule (that, incidentally, is not particular to only this Junction restaurant) will prompt me to immediately only frequent restaurants that will accommodate my location for delivery.
The dining room (if you can call it that), sucks. Mismatched cafeteria-style tables do not welcome the sit-down diner. They're really trying to cater to a take-out clientele - annoying. Equally annoying that they don't have bathrooms, or dinnerware. In my opinion - though I'm not a stickler on this - a food as elegant as sushi should be served in an elegant restaurant complete with polite servers and pleasing decor - the clumsy way the room is assembled represents a real departure from Japanese culture. It certainly does not put the diner at ease. You'd think, at least, that the prices would reflect the extra low overhead that comes with not having table service, not the case (they do, however, drop the food off at your table).
The staff is friendly and cheerful - until they see the tip (that reflects the lack of table service).
The Yelp posting says that they accept credit cards but they do not! Very inconvenient.
Also, notice that, among these reviews, the majority are from people who are just glad that there's a sushi place in the Junction - not a good enough reason to rate it so high in my opinion.
Also, didn't get the much-talked-about free hand roll though I saw pretty much every other customer get one.
As far as the food goes, the temperature and pale salmon was my only complaint. Being the only sushi resto in the Junction means that they have enough clientele that the fish should turn over with sufficient frequency - excellent news for a sushi restaurant.
"Favorite sushi"??? Have any of you other reviewers even eaten sushi before?
Despite Lan Sushi's shortcomings, I'll try them again sometime to make sure the food (and the rating/review) is accurately represented - it's only fair. read more
