What a great find! Tom and Jahnavi at Hawaiian Crown chocolate recommended Lam's Garden for a quick lunch, and I'm so glad they did. My husband ate the pork Bahn Mi, and I had a chicken vermicelli noodle bowl. It was very fresh and delicious. I highly recommend the steamed dumplings, as well. After a cold and rainy day at volcano National Park, soup really hits the spot. Their oxtail pho is one of the cleanest I've had and they give plenty of oxtail and flank. I wouldn't go for the lemongrass curry chicken again as it was mostly onions covering bits and pieces of carrots, celery, and chicken. I did like how the curry came with rice instead of an extra add on charge. Parking in private parking lot. Lots of seating for small and big groups. The most positive reviews of this place sing the praises of the pho. Unfortunately, I was in the mood for Chinese, and the somewhat limited Chinese menu may not be the establishment's strong suit. But the problems started with the Thai iced tea, normally one of my favorite beverages. This rendition had an odd flavor, almost as if a bit of coffee had snuck into the tea. And the texture was oddly greasy. I normally have to restrain myself from downing a Thai iced tea before my food arrives, but I never finished this. For dinner I had kung pao chicken, substituting fried rice for the regular steamed for $3 extra. It was ... okay. Fried rice is hard to screw up, and they didn't. The kung pao chicken had a bit of kick (asked to select mild or spicy I went for spicy), but not that much flavor otherwise. Some nights I might complain that the vegetables significantly outnumbered the pieces of chicken, but I have had too much heavy food this trip so that didn't bother me. All in all it was a completely forgettable meal. On the plus side, my waiter was both efficient and friendly. But I doubt I'll ever go back. read more

The reason for the 4-star rating is because that lack air-conditioning in this enclosed restaurant. First time, tried the oxtail pho and was shocked how tough the meat was compared to all the other places on the island where it's tender and usually falling off the bone. The second time, ordered through Express Waiters at 4:30 PM. My driver arrived there 20 minutes later. At 5:10, my order still hadn't moved so I called for an update. The restaurant said they confirmed my order as soon as it was sent in, but that dine-in customers had first priority and I'd have to wait until after them to get mine. When my driver finally arrived at 5:30, I asked her how many people were dining at the restaurant. The answer was zero. She said the restaurant restarted their app at 5 PM and started making my food then. I was lied to, the food that showed up was mediocre, and not at all worth the $40+ for two dishes. If you want good Vietnamese on the island, the best option is Le Yellow Sub. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

If you're driving by two fast you'll miss it as the restaurant is pretty hidden. The only reason I saw it was because they had a sign advertising oxtail pho. I love oxtail and pho so putting them together sounded like a dream come true. I ordered the oxtail pho and my boyfriend ordered the spring rolls and beef pho. Mines was $12.95 which I think is such a good deal since usually oxtail soup ranges from $16-$18? The spring rolls and beef pho were both $8.50 which is also very reasonable. When my pho came I was not disappointed. There was three decent sized pieces of oxtail that were very tender and the meat practically fell off the bone. It also came with flank and beef which were also very tender and tasty as well. The broth was super flavorful and comforting and there was a ton of noodles along with some red onions to add texture. This bowl of pho was probably one of the best I've ever had!!! My boyfriend even agreed that their pho was very good. I will definitely be back for more pho and maybe to even try some of the other dishes. They have both Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. Don't let looks deceive you from trying out this restaurant. Lam's is a cute family restaurant with lots of space and lazy Susan table tops, perfect for family dining! we stopped in here with my in-laws to be for lunch before leaving Hilo and the meal was served quickly and everything was very delicious. me being the only vegetarian in the group ordered the fried tofu appetizer and vegetable egg rolls. My other half and parents-in-law to be all three ordered variations included the oxtail soup and the meatball with brisket. My father-in-law to be also ordered some fried rice all my mother-in-law to be ordered the mango salad with shrimp. our waitress was very friendly and was sure to make sure that our waters were filled throughout our meal. Next time we're back in Hilo we will be sure to stop back in at lambs for lunch. There pho is delicious and perfect on any type of day hot cold rainy etc..there pork spring rolls with tje table side chili sauce at your disposal is my fav.#LOVEit Crispy pork and cake noodles are excellent as well..everything came out fresh N hot. Shocked at the authenticity of the food and depth of flavor!! Ordered the oxtail pho and beef chow fun. The yummy hot chili oil on the table was the cherry on top. By far best Chinese/Vietnamese I've had on the island. Very open atmosphere inside. Update: The food is consistently good!! They use local produce and even grow their own bean sprouts!! The clay pot fish is a little small, but it is made with catfish! I think they could improve by playing music in the dining room, my mom said 'it feels like a library!' I spent more here then I usually do anywhere else but I wanted to try multiple items and give it a fair shake. It was not worth it at all. Everything tasted either bland or old. Nothing stood out as worth the price to me. In fact I would rather throw my left overs away then try and force myself to finish it. I might try agian but I am pretty disappointed with my attempt at being adventurous. Hilo siam is cheaper and tastes 10 times better.
