The handmade items are all infused with delight. I have several different items that I treasure.

I go to the Mission District pretty often and Laku is one of my favorite stores to visit. It has a very adorable, vintage feel to it. The clothing and accessories are so pretty especially the woven scarves and fingerless gloves. And the shoes are gorgeous- almost too lovely to wear even. It also has a lot of one of a kind jewelry; I bought a necklace from there and got a lot of compliments on it. My last visit, I bought a very sweet rag doll rabbit (that my brother is convinced is haunted but he's always been distrustful of dolls). But I think my favorite thing about the store is the art. The owner is a very talented artist and much of her work is inspired by Japanese culture or Frida Kahlo, with a surrealist touch. I'm not an art expert by any means but I do know I can spend all day staring at her gallery. Unfortunately, an original painting is still a bit rich for my blood. Fortunately, she also sells greeting cards that are mini reproductions of most of her art as well as prints so I made sure to buy a bunch of those. The only downside to this place is the amount of money I end up spending when I'm there. But she does have a very cute dog, so that's pretty cool too. read more

I can't believe no one has reviewed Laku- a shop full of original unique designs in women's and children's clothing and accessories. She also designs gorgeous brocade and leather slippers as well as some whimsical fabric animals. Some of the hats and scarves are more like one of a kind art pieces than clothing- but they're simple and elegant enough that they look beautiful when worn. Inside on little shelves all around the walls you'll be surrounded by a combination of contemporary art lamps, antique porcelain and handsewn creations. Maybe no one had reviewed Laku because they want to keep it to themselves. I hope I don't spoil it. Be kind to the velvet rabbits and give props to the owner. She is an amazing artisan and we're lucky she spins her magic here. 10/27/2006FirsttoReview (I originally posted this a year ago). read more

I purchased a pair of handmade fingerless cashmere gloves from Chateau Sonoma and was told about the designer who made them. They are my favorite and I want to buy more. I can't wait to visit the store! read more

Laku struck me as a cute store with handmade items... until I saw their storefront window. I'm not sure what's going on with the room for rent ad posted out front. "Only Women, no Drag" doesn't strike me as particularly kind. Won't be stopping back in. read more

This store is not my cup of tea but I'm sure it is for a lot of people out there. I think most of the items in the store are handmade by the owner. She seemed a little off her rocker, but she seems talented? There were a lot of cute knitted animals and clothing in the shop. I even saw some adorable baby shoes and wondered if she made them. This store is extremely whimsical and worth checking out. It's not for me though. read more

My favorite store in San Francisco. The most magical boutique with beautiful jewelry, kids clothes and antiques and collectibles. Hard to find these unique stores anymore especially in SF. read more

There are beautiful items in this store and I want to buy them, but this store is usually NOT WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE, and the owner gets very upset when I try to enter her store, because she is more concerned about her items than she is about creating wheelchair-accessible avenues in which to move around her store. I once had my husband move items cluttering the floor in the aisles slightly so I could get in, and I even bought a knit flower ring from Laku, but ever since, the aisles have been even MORE cluttered, and the owner makes no effort to welcome me as a customer or assist me from the front door, something that many other store owners do when their stores are inaccessible. It's a shame, really. I'm definitely her target market in so many ways. But if someone doesn't want me as a customer and treats me disrespectfully, I won't bend over backwards (figuratively or literally) to try to give them my business. If you are able-bodied and don't require a wheelchair, this store might be your cup of tea. read more

Have been coming to this little shop for over a decade and a half every time I find myself in San Francisco. The lady who runs the store is very talented and creative! You can always count on finding a one of a kind gift for someone in your life. Hand-knitted hats, re-designed dresses, or vintage jewelry pieces. It is all examples of types of items I have picked up there over the years. Absolutely a "must go" for anyone visiting SF area. I recommend. Just be patient around opening time. She's not always there to open at the exact hour and minute. read more

I love this store. It's like a kooky Japanese seamstress fairy woman child tailor went wild and set out to work on creating a fashion line. I got a headband here that I wear as an ear-warmer. It's very thick hand crochet, with embellished little flowers on it, and it's kinda hippie but so perfect for my ever-cold ears. It was expensive, but I've held onto it for about 4 years, and it was definitely worth the money. I love it! The baby gifts and booties are a highlight, but it's so fun to go in and look at all of the gorgeous handmade things. read more

Oh my goodness. I want to live here! I was drawn in by the adorable little knit baby hats with little knit animals pinned in their pockets in the window. So freaking cute! I thought one would be perfect for my little niece's first birthday, until I realized how much everything cost. Honestly, I think everything there is probably worth every penny, I just don't happen to have that many pennies right now. Besides the little hats though, the stuffed animals were amazing, as were the pillows and arm warmers. Maybe I'll invest in a gift from here for her birthday number two, once her head slows its freakishly swift growth a bit. read more

If you're searching for that something rare, hard-to-find-nobody-else-has-it, this is the place. Forget the snobby, limited stock stores with unappealing storefronts. Laku is that unique boutique that has it all, no matter what your size, economic status or religion. The owners are straight shooters: Yes, they WILL tell you if your ass looks fat in that dress, if that blouse makes your boobs look weird, or if you just look silly in that sleeveless when this little reversible top would look sooo much better. The owners are warm, funny and real, but this IS the Mission, so if you cop a 'tude, they will cop one right back, and they're much better at it, so be don't be a jerk and you'll get along just fine. read more

The crafty items on display lured me in. I was taken to another world. Apparently, a world created by a Japanese tailor. I believe everything is handmade. Their inventory mainly consisted of knitted accessories, jewelry, women's clothing, and baby clothing. Although there wasn't much for me (a guy), the experience of entering such a place is satisfying enough, similar to entering an antique shop on Valencia. The pleasant classical music, the decorated walls and lighting, the handmade objects. Just stand at the entrance, look up, then around. The place embodies San Francisco. Anyway, it was a somewhat profound experience for me. read more

Laku is exquisite. What an experience to enter this unique universe. I've bought cashmere fingerless gloves, little kids dolls that are treasured, scarves and other wonderful delights. Don't miss it! Yes it's quirky. But it's genuinely creative. The owner has my awe and admiration for what she achieves. read more

Such an inspiring shop in the Mission. I love that the proprietress works on her sewing while tending the store. It's a little forest of color, inventiveness and yummy textures in here. It's different from anything else in the city. Lovely, handmade slippers for babies, kids and women at reasonable prices. Gorgeous, unique hats. Felted funny toys, pricey buttons, Japanese fabric., more When you're tired of looking at ironic typewriters, pop in to Laku. read more

Be still my beating heart...pitter patter, pitter patter. I want to live in this shop, or decorate myself and my home in everything from this shop. When I walk into this shop I feel as though I'm stepping into an alternate time/place. Classical music is playng and I'm surrounded by handmade items of the best fabrics...linen, muslin, silks or fine cashmires, mohairs, wools, etc and in either very muted or vibrant colors. Baby handmade toys, hats, slippers, booties, sweaters, adult bloomers, wraps, gloves, mittens, scarves, sweaters, skirts, handsewn jewelry and vintage jewelry as well. All handmade, machine sewn or hand sewn or knitted right from the shop. I am in awe and envy of the owner's exquisite taste, creative vision and the ability to execute her vision. Everything is priced on the higher end but it's worth it. read more

This cute shop just look like popping out of the best illustration book. It's not cheap, but after an annoying shopping afternoon for my baby boy downtown, without finding anything I would really really like to buy, I ended up in this little faery land and I was really happy indeed. I found the cutest booties, orange with dots on it, to match Papa's favorite Tshirt with a mushroom. And a cute handknitten bunny with green dots and pink ears, and the cutest silk doll brooch ever, hum, this one was for me...I wish I was able to buy the whole shop! It's a little girl's dream, a real size dollhouse, cute and sweet! read more

I wandered into Laku with my brother, his wife and their 6 month old baby. The hand-knit baby shoes, hats, sweaters, flowers and dolls first caught our eye. Everything is original, colorful and all are works of art. The corduroy Scotti dogs and angora bunnies were my favorite! I also loved the little baby sweaters with finger puppets in their pocket! Throughout the store you will find hand made women's clothing as well. Great for that one-of-a-kind gift you've been looking for! I am inspired! I can't wait to go back! read more

MY ULTIMATE FANTASY STORE I've loved this dreamy shop ever since I stepped into it. It perfect for all girls who love pretty things. The only thing I can compare this store to is a Hayao Miyazaki movie (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Express Service, to name my favorites). There are so many crazy things and colors happening on the walls and in the display cases that it's hard to take it all in at once. Hand-knit baby socks, pom-pom jester shoes, velveteen hats, fuzzy gloves, zebra, octopus, gecko finger puppets, French porcelain lady shoes, strange figurines, thin-limbed rabbits. Plop yourself down on the polka-dot Alice in Wonderland tea party chair next to the front counter when you get dizzy. The Japanese owner artist is very gentle and cute, with long, middle-parted, salt-and-pepper hair. She smiles so sweetly but always seems half ready to morph into some trippy-ass Miyazaki creature and start moaning at you and spouting out gold spirit-bath tokens... read more

Happening upon Laku, about 4 years ago, I was enamored from the first. I had an idea for a dress, to be made for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in. Approaching Yaeko, the owner, she sketched and created a spectacular, dress with my specs. She doesn't prefer to do this, as she creates originals for her shop primarily. What originals they are! Purses and hats and dresses and slippers...sweaters and baby clothes every child will love to "live fully " in. Her quality and selection is superb- her vintage jewelry collection full of gems...literally! Do support this local fashion maven- may she continue to prosper. Did I mention her original- multimedia artwork..? This woman has Talent. read more

I bought my mom two lovely pairs of slippers. One a "dress" pair made out of velvet with gorgeous rosettes. The other, a pair of "every day" slippers were cashmere with little pompoms. My mom's reaction said it all. She put the dress pair on and admired them and refused to take them off! The best gifts don't have to be the most costly. These were each under $100. The store is lovely - quirky, eccentric, and so not "chain store." Laku is the epitome of the "neighborhood boutique" - not an everyday kind of place, but a place to find a unique, lovely, and well made gift for a special person. read more

It is quite a treat to wander into Laku with its original designs with beautiful textiles and fabrics. I long for one of Yaeko's sweater/shawls. She makes these unique and colorful gloves and baby booties and handmade plush animals. Often, Yaeko will be sewing and creating something while you are wandering the store! Its very charming! read more

I end up buying a lot of holiday gifts here for my nieces and nephews -- I just can't help myself; they have such cool, hand-made items. I have a Laku sweater jacket I bought here a few years ago I wear practically every day as my casual "house-coat" -- it's getting pretty worn, sadly, but I'm also amazed by how well it's held up with so much wear/tear. I also have several pairs of gloves from Laku that have held up pretty well with many dog walks in the cold salty mists and rain. read more

All offered here is scrumptious...I can't wait for a grand-baby. WHOO-HOO! When I wear my Laku hats, I just *feel* happier. There's magic in this place, and it's sewn into the owner's hand made clothing, hats and accessories.
