FINALLY Zach and I made it out onto Lake Belton! We tried last year and Frank's was doing some…read moremaintenance on the bobcats and then we just didn't get around to it. So we showed up today a casual 10 minutes late. I'm always stressed about being late and they were very cool with it which immediately relaxed me. I think the marina itself could use more signage as we didn't see where to go to check in and had to be directed by someone else on the dock. We find our way, one of the employees said she was going to check that our bobcat was working (really appreciate that, always want to know it works) and we checked in inside. Without prompting, they recommend some cool areas of the lake to check out. This was excellent and I loved it. Zach was driving, so I was thriving, and they had wine on sale for 20% off, so they twisted my arm and I ended up with some delicious, cheap, plastic, single-serving bottles of wine. They were very patient with my nerves as we got loaded onto the boat and I tried not to lose all of my items. I really misinterpreted the size of the boat and, as I always do, overpacked. We did not need towels, we did not really need ... anything .... except maybe the wine. They gave us a great overview of how to steer the bobcat, cuz it was a little different than what we are used to with big boy boats, and we were off! We had a great time, we made it back alive, we signed a paper saying we were alive and had returned their bobcat, and they surprised us by saying bobcat rentals no longer have to pay for gas. We did not argue and hippity hopped it out of there. They made it so easy, the price is reasonable, they seem to have pretty open availability, and you can rent by the 1/2 hour. I can see us having a date night where we grab some dinner at Deadfish and then take a bobcat out for an hour to watch the sunset from the lake. This is my life now? No complaints.

BEST shelter and park we have been to yet. We are extremely impressed! We rented shelter #5, it overlooks the lake and is across the way from the bathrooms, huge plus (I love camping, but don't hover well haha). The restrooms were so so, nothing special, but better than peeing behind a tree. Same goes for the showers, nothing special, but I loved that they were private, offered hot water, and had a little sink in the stall. The shelter itself was amazing! We have never been to a park where the shelters have tarps to cover the screened areas. You can tie them up or lock them down, perfect for privacy or blocking out the wind on cold nights. We also brought a lock to lock the shelter while we were away, but with multiple gates to get to the shelters we felt very safe. We came in late and left early, so we unfortunately did not get a chance to interact with the park host or other employees. But they were very friendly and helpful when I called asking for information. Overall I am very impressed, I don't think I can express that any more clearly. We will definitely be back and are already looking at our calendar! We need to get our canoe out here!

I went in on a Saturday to look at a specific kayak they had in stock. As soon as I opened the door…read morethe smell hit me. The shop smells like a litter box. There's at least 1 cat walking around and it's clearly been using several items in the place as scratch pads. One kayak had the flooring all torn up. The furniture with padding is disgusting! There are birds too. Cages were disgusting. Even the fish tank was gross. In fact, the place looks like it's owned by hoarder. There's stuff stashed in various areas. The more you look around, the more you see. Now on to the shopping experience. I told them what I was looking for and they directed me to a "salesman". He showed me what I was looking for which was outside covered in dirt. That's where his usefulness stopped. He had no clue about any of the kayaks I wanted to see. Told me the kayak had 800lb weight limit but it's actually 650lbs. When I asked where the floor inserts were he said they didn't come with them, but they actually do come with them already installed. Asked for a specific color and was told that color was "defective" and the manufacturer was recalling all of them, and that's another lie. When he realized I wasn't going to buy one right then and there, he proceeded to follow me around the store for the remainder of my visit. The only way he would've gotten closer was if he had ridden on my back! I ended up driving to San Marcos the same day and bought the exact kayak I wanted. If you buy anything from here, make sure you disinfect the hell out of it.

It had hair and scratches in the boats and furniture. Then there were bird cages that smells bad as well with almost black looking water in them. Fish tank didn't look too good either. There was a bag of open chips and other food items like salsa out in what looked like a break room, along with what looked like newspapers and trash laying around. It looked like hoarders storage unit. The boats were dirty and the kayaks were stacked on top of each other outside. So you had to move them to look at the other ones. It just looked completely unprofessional compared to other places. The sales guy didn't know anything. Everything he said was completely wrong from the pamphlet they have of the kayak I wanted sitting up front for anyone to take. If I can't get this kayak I want from anywhere else, then I'll just swim around.

Three of us caught 130 fish in four hours and it was SO much fun!…read more Bob Maindelle is no ordinary guide: he graduated from West Point with a BS in engineering and made a living in and out of the service as an environmental engineer and minister. He worked with Mepps to develop his signature MAL lure which we used exclusively on the trip. He has a custom designed center console boat crammed with LOTS of state of the art electronics, including FIVE Garmin LiveScope monitors with a separate LiveScope transducer for each side of the boat. All of us were amazed at the ability to see our lures go up and down and see the fish respond to them. We chose Bob Maindelle because we wanted a good lesson besides catching a lot of fish. He totally delivered on this with detailed demonstration, description and coaching on the very specific ways he fishes the MAL lure vertically and horizontally. He had separate rod and reel setups for vertical and horizontal fishing: slower reels with softer tips for vertical fishing and faster reels with stiffer rods for horizontal fishing. Bob also gave use a good lesson on how he uses his marine electronics. He uses a Humminbird Solix as his primary fishfinder in for sidescan mode and it is linked to his Minn Kota i-Pilot Linked trolling motor so he can mark a location on the fishfinder's touch screen and then send the trolling motor back to that exact location with a few more touches. He carefully explained the importance of positioning the boat downwind of the mark before commanding the trolling motor, so that the boat will be positioned correct when it arrives at the marked location. His attention to detail is exactly what I expected out of a West Point engineer, but he has an excellent ability to explain things so that less technical individuals can understand. Bob also pulled up Canyon Lake on his fishfinder map and showed us a bunch of places for us to try fishing on our home lake. We will certainly bring our boat up to Lake Belton for Bob's on-the-water sonar training class to make sure our electronics are properly installed and the settings tweaked to maximize our units' fish-finding potential. Based on Bob's demonstrations, we will be adding additional electronics to our boat to improve our fishing. White Bass fishing is fast-paced with lots of fish being caught. It is PERFECT for younger anglers who need a lot of action to stay interested. It is LOTS of fun for all ages. Bob makes it all so easy and fun and he is reasonably priced.
