So I love ice cream and might even have a slight addiction and this place is not helping. This is second best ice cream place in New England I've been to. They have the typical huge sizes of New England ice cream stands although I would go with a baby here not a kiddie. It was plenty big for me and easily the size of a kiddie at most other ice cream stands. The prices are average and the service is very good. What makes this place stand out is the unbelievable quality of the ice cream and the really interesting flavor combinations. The ice cream is extremely creamy and soft which just makes it that much better. Their standard assortment of flavors would be amazing all on its own, but then they throw in special limited edition flavors which seem to run for a couple days. So make sure you check out what the specials available are when you go. So definitely check this place out if you like ice cream. Its worth a drive even if you're not in the area. read more

This place has really good ice cream. Really creamy and flavorful. I went with the raspberry Oreo, which was really tasty. The sizes are absolutely huge. The best way I can explain them is in terms of Starbucks sizes. So, the baby size is about the size of your average cup of ice cream that you'd find at any ice cream place. The kids size is pretty much a tall cup at Starbucks FILLED with ice cream. I think the next size was a small, which was the size of a grande filled with ice cream. I didn't get to see the large in person, but I imagine its the size of a venti filled with ice cream. So, pretty much listen to the other reviews and keep in mind that the ice cream sizes are absolutely gigantic. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place others, and I would drive out of the my way to eat this ice cream once in awhile. read more

Ice cream is my favorite food. I'd say I have pretty high ice cream standards as well, and Lago's definitely makes my top 10 list of best places to get ice cream. Despite the fact that Lago's doesn't exactly have the best setting to hang out and eat your sweet treat, their ice cream is fantastic. The service is also great because even though there are constantly long lines, they move incredibly quick thanks to the awesome staff! As for my favorite flavors, coffee health bar yogurt has been a consistent favorite of mine. I always love to try the special flavors, which I would recommend picking a random one if you arrive and don't know what to choose. You can't go wrong with the classics but why not try something unique like wild blueberry or chocolate oreo!? I stopped by here tonight. Service was horrible. I stood at the window for 10 minutes before they even acknowledged I was there. All college kids for staff standing around talking and ignoring the customers. I asked for a baby sized peanut butter cup in a cup. The portion was ok but it had way too much sugar in it and I threw more than half of it in the trash. Was going to go to Hodgies in Salisbury I just didn't want to drive all that way tonight. People around here are passionate about Lago's, and there's a reason why. Their flavors are unique and delicious and the portions are HUGE. I usually order a "baby" size, the smallest there is, and I never go away with room for more. Cappuccino Slam is my personal favorite, and Fudgie Chimp (when they have it) is also noteworthy. The actual stringy banana bits in the banana ice cream are an indication of the quality ingredients they use. To sum it up in one word - spectacular. You can taste the care that goes into making Lago's ice cream. Approximately 78.7% my spoonfuls of Kahlua fudge brownie actually contained pieces of brownie. Ask anyone who is has an interest in statistically examining their ice cream and they will tell you that a 78.7% BIF (brownie in ice cream frequency) is truly impressive. Let me start by saying I love little places like this that make their own homemade ice cream and I will gladly go out of my way to find places like this. So when I was driving through Portsmouth and my girlfriend saw this place on yelp (with such good reviews) I knew we had to stop there. When I got there and I saw the different flavors they had to offer, I thought this place was going to be a gem that I would gladly go to whenever I found myself in Portsmouth. But when I got to the window and I asked to try 3 flavors in a large, the server was like you can only get 2. I then asked if I could get a small with 2 flavors, but she said a small only comes with 1 flavor*. At this point I was thinking that the amount of ice cream that was in a large wouldn't be very much and that would explain the lack of choice in the number of flavors you could get. So I paid the price for a large with 2 flavors, thinking that if the ice cream was good all would be fine. When my ice cream came, my jaw hit the floor when they handed over 21 ounces of ice cream. In my experience at most small local shops, this would be equivalent to 3 or even 4 scoops of ice cream. And so not allowing customers to try at least 3 different flavors seems ridiculous, and this is due to either an unhelpful server or just bad policy in general. I really did try to finish the whole thing (because the ice cream was very good, but not the best I have ever had), but I just couldn't do it; the monotony of just having 2 flavors and so much ice cream was actually unpleasant (I never thought I would say this). My negative review reflects the fact that when I go to little places like this I want to try variety** and being forced to get get so much ice cream just to try a couple flavors is just too much for me. Considering I have had better ice cream elsewhere, I think the only reason I would go back would be to try their 5 scoops banana split ($8.50) just so I can try more flavors. *They have 4 sizes "baby", "kid", "small" and "large" **Note on yelp 2 stars is "I've experienced better" read more

We've been vacationing on the New Hampshire seacoast for years, so I'm not sure how we missed Lago's for so long. This year, we decided to try a different ice cream place every night, so I jumped on Yelp and found that Lago's was close to rental at Wallis Sands. When we pulled into the parking lot, we knew right away that we'd made the right decision, as we had to park in overflow parking, there were so many people. Despite the crowd, we were served quickly and the ice cream was delicious - and not pricey! We will definitely be making a return visit (or two) next summer! read more

Bring you cash or visit the ATM inside because this cash only operation even has its high school and college workers doing the math on paper!
