Flan with a bite or two missing -- eggy and delicious

We arrived in the midst of a rare Santa Fe rainstorm, so they had hurriedly brought in the outside table and umbrella, but the interior is brightly lit and decorated with both contemporary art and panoramic photos of Havana's waterfront. The chairs have wooden legs and plastic bodies, but they are quite comfortable, and the surrounds on Lena Street are charming. We were greeted with a smile and a carafe of still water with our menus. As we pondered the many choices, another couple was just leaving and they made sure to let us know they loved the food and the service. They were proved absolutely right. My dinner companion and I both ordered mocktail mojito, which were tall, refreshing, and wonderful as a meal partner. My companion chose the Guajira plate, pulled pork with Moro rice (black beans and rice cooked together with a magical spice blend) and plaintains. I had the same, but with the Ropa Vieja shredded beef instead. Both were outstanding, and the portions were just right. That left us enough room to share an order of the house flan. Lago's version leans rustic, with visible egg texture rather than the glossy version served by some kitchens. Just the right sweetness from the drizzled light caramel sauce sent us out the door smiling and determined to return with a small party so we can sample the enticing tapas platters together.

On our last night in Santa Fe, my son and I were looking for something different and we came across Lago Café. It's off the beaten path, but I think that really enhances its appeal. There are roughly six tables inside and an outdoor seating area. When we walked inside, we were immediately greeted and ushered to a table. The wait staff was engaging and attentive. My son ordered the virgin Mojito and said that it was very refreshing. For our meals, I ordered the Guajiro with the moro rice and plantains, and my son ordered the Cojimero. My son really enjoyed his cojimero. The guajiro? Oh my goodness. The slow-cooked pork was excellent. It says 'with barbecue sauce,' in the description, but don't think of your typical tomato- or vinegar-based BBQ sauce. It was something altogether different and very tasty. Mix it with the chimichurri to add another level of goodness to the dish. Also, the plantains and the moro rice were delicious. Finally, I ordered flan and an espresso for dessert. The flan had that great custard texture and the perfect level of sweetness. It came with a chocolate sauce, but did not need it. The espresso was a bit of a let down. It did not have that sharp sweetness, but rather tasted like the coffee had been exposed to too much air, oxidizing it. That is a very minor thing in comparison to everything else. All that to say, I highly recommend that you enjoy a meal at Café Lago, and do yourself a favor, order the guajiro.

Patrons were all soft spoken and music was low as well here, which was a very nice contrast to the often loud music of other restaurants in the area. Food was a pleasant medley of spices and sweetness. Cannot recommend this place highly enough, their jerk chicken was fall off the bone. It reminded me of Jamaica but it was honestly better than when I was there. 10/10! I forgot to take photos we devoured the food we ordered so quickly! Vegetarian combination platter was also something my partner loved! So great for vegetarians too!

You should never in life need a knife for oxtails, but the knife was warranted because we indeed did. What meat there was, was tough and entirely lacking in flavor, to include the gravy they swam in - which had the barest HINT of spice. Another reviewer got it right when they said it's generous to claim the dish is accompanied by a side of collards. There was a sprinkling of chopped, nearly raw collards and a chunk of mofongo. Perhaps the food is better when the chef is actually in the kitchen, but he definitely wasn't back there on this day. My husband's Coke was flat and the Jamaican hibiscus tea was mouth puckering. The ambiance was nice - loved the bazaar - and the staff friendly, but unfortunately that's the best that can be said.

Perfectly seasoned, crispy, and you get a generous portion, which makes the price feel like a steal. My husband's grilled catfish salad was huge and genuinely delicious, not an afterthought like it can be elsewhere. Sides were a bit mixed. The mac and cheese was overdone, but the red beans and rice were excellent, full of flavor and exactly what you want alongside that fish. Only real drawback is the hours. We found ourselves wishing they were open more often because it is the kind of place you want in regular rotation. Overall, great food, strong portions, and real value. We will absolutely be back.

It wasn't like a soup how we are used to, it was sort of thick and slimy, the flavor was a little too different. 1 star dish to be honest. We threw it in the trash. The jambalaya was a little better, but it still wasn't great. It actually made it to like a 3.5 star quality dish; it was good enough to eat, so we ate this. The fried oysters were pretty good, especially when dipped in their spicy tartar sauce, 4 stars for this dish. I might actually crave this once in a blue moon. Their Mac and cheese had so much potential. It was thick and creamy how I like it, burned cheese on it was great, they attempted to put som cajun seasoning in it that you can barely taste, but the part that docked them points the most was the Mac was overcooked probably sat on a heat lamp for a very long time. The fries were soggy after only a 5 minute drive. They also use styrofoam, which I personally don't like eating from due to the forever chemicals that leach into the food when it's hot. Also after spending $40 and asking for an extra sauce I got charged a dollar. I mean okay I don't thin the side sauce was worth the dollar but also the sauce that came with it was only filled half way. I mentioned that am still I was charged the buck. The lady up front had an alright demeanor, the lady cooking in the back seemed really sweet and asked me how i found them, had a smile etc. I think they should have someone like that cashiering.
