This is a bit of a cheat really - I'm majorly reviewing the Snake Pass road(A57 from Sheffield to…read moreGlossop) which is one of the most awesome roads to ride a motorbike, or drive a car upon. Beautiful scenery, mixed up with some excellent twisty bits of road. A real challenge, which should be respected - people do have accidents here! The pub is not far out of Bamford, and is a pleasant enough place to stop for refreshment, or a room. The road runs alongside Derwent Reservoir (where the Dambuster's practised their bombing runs for the attacks on the German dams during WW2) which is a spectacular area for hiking around or mountain biking responsibily. Come up, you will not regret it.

Lovely little pub on the Snake Pass between Glossop and Sheffield…read more The general bar area is quite small but theres also a dinning area if you want to have a meal. The drinks are reasonably priced and they also do lovely hot chocolate, tea and coffee if you're driving or if you've been exploring the hills in the cold and need to warm up. They have open fires too which helps! The Snake Pass Inn also has has rooms for bed and breakfast. They have singles and doubles, a honeymoon suite which is around £75 per night and a four poster bed room which is £80 per night. They also have function rooms available and advertise for weddings and parties. There is outdoor space and a good sized car park. The pub always seems quite popular when driving by and I've stopped several times for a quick drink to break up my journey.

A very old (1500s) pub that is clean and comfortable without having been yuppie-refurbished. See?…read moreIt IS achievable. Michael B having mentioned scampi about 30% of the way through the walk I was relieved to see it at the top of the menu board as lack of scampi would have cause lack of safety for aforesaid Michael B. Food came really quickly even though there was 7 of us. Scampi was of course great as all breadcumbed and deep fried things are. The chips were also really nice, fresh and crispy. Other people's food looked good too - the hiker's special involves a Cumberland sausage and a pasty, obviously. The vegetarian option also sounded appealing - red onion, leek and goats cheese. It's obviously not gourmet but it's very decent pub food and ideal if you've been hiking in the area.

The pub was fairly busy but we managed to get seats for all 8 of us. There was a big screen TV with the football on at the other side of the pub but couldn't really hear anything - apart from near the end when City scored. I went for scampi and chips. Its been awhile since had scampi and also, as Natalie has mentioned in her review, it was mentioned a good few times by Michael B. So I couldn't think of anything else and it was right at the top of the specials menu! The food came quickly. The scampi and chips came in a fancy "zip zag" sort of plate with the chips in a mini chip basket thing - the sort of thing you see in a chippy when you put chips to cook - but smaller of course. I actually saw something similar to this when I was in the Lowry Hotel few months ago. (Someone had a burger and it came in a wooden crate/box). The scampi tasted good but could have done with more, chips were tasty. Peas were OK but it also came with a bit of salad too. Overall decent pub food and perfect after walking.

It is everything you'd expect from a pub which makes it's stock and trade in tourism. Nearly everyone in the pub was a walker or at least a tourist coming to enjoy the beautiful Edale Valley and it oozes that familial feel of a shared interest even though you are amongst a group of strangers. The pub is exceedingly warm and cosy with one side dedicated to eating in three rooms. There is also a large beer garden out the front of the pub which is lovely in the Summer sun, though was not heavily used on this cold Winter day. They also have accommodation upstairs for walkers who have an entire weekend of activities planned. They have a nice selection of cask beer (quite a few from Bradfield Brewery which being only 16 miles away is probably the most local) and the expected keg beers though I won't grace them with acknowledging any in particular. There was a large number of us booked in for a late lunch. I would suggest booking ahead especially on the weekend if you are a sizeable group. I ordered the Roast Beef. A large meal arrived and was devoured with gusto. I wouldn't say it was the best roast I've had but it was exactly what you would expect from a local country pub and filled you with a hearty warm feeling after a cold day on the hills. They were also exceptionally fats in delivering food to about 20 people. All ordered and received their meals within about 30 minutes. I was rather astonished by the speed, but then reminded myself that they do this sort of brisk trade week after week.

Ordered the sausage and mash overpriced at 10.95 and a beer and attempted to pay by credit card. They barman said the had some trouble with the credit card machine so I said I would sign on the way out. The meal arrived within minutes so obviously not freshly cooked although it tasted ok. However when i went to sign off my card I was left waiting for 20 minutes by an very ungracious landlady who would not return my card until she got the epdq sorted. I found the whole experience rather distastful and will not be returning.
