A great little Peak District pub which I would definitely recommend.
We were a bit anxious on arrival that we'd be too late for food and because the landlord was so relaxed about getting our menu and taking our order feared we'd be forgotten but no, basically they were just busy on a bank holiday and once the order went in we got our very well cooked whitebait and then delicious ham hock, leek and mustard pies very promptly. I'm still not sure whether it's table service or order at the bar, but I think it's the former!
Beer was well kept and we a nice bitter shandy made with a golden ale. Oddly there were four pales and the one golden on - no amber, porter etc. Would be nice to see some darker ales on offer. There was a bottled stout which I bought to take away (was on a shelf in pub, not behind bar, but I think you can probably drink it on premises away) but it was really bad and I had to pour it away. Stick to the taps!
Very cosy multi-roomed layout, with a fire blazing in one room. Also very dog-friendly. Landlord very friendly and helpful. read more
