Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

Owned by Matteo and Alyson, a family team, the pub specialises in Sardinian cuisine, which is executed to an exquisite standard. Speciality starters include Sardinian Cocoi: Courgette, Tomato And Pecorino Rosti served with Pickled Onion Chutney and the delightful Prosciutto, Melon, Mozzarella and Tomato Platter (The cheese is homemade by Matteo using real buffalo milk). All of the starters are around the £4-5 mark. Mains include Prickly Pear Glazed Pork Belly With Spam And Black Pudding, Apple And Cider Chutney at £9.50 and Roast Rack Of Lamb, Roasted Pear And Cannonau Wine Sauce at £11.50. Not just for the vegetarians, the menu offers an excellent Roast Butternut Squash, Fregola And Pecorino Cheese Crumble for £8.95. The prices are very reasonable and the standard of the food is second-to-none. Yet above even the wonderful food on offer, the Red Lion's well-deserved fame really comes from its cellar. Matteo maintains 5 guest ales, featuring options like Goldings, Nine Ladies Ale, Swift Nick (from the nearby Chatsworth estate) and the omnipresent standard-bearer of the real ale world, Jaipur. Weston's cider and perry is also on pump, in addition to the selection of bottled ciders available on request. The Red Lion is a friendly, welcoming establishment that offers the very best of Sardinian cuisine and British ale at extremely honest prices. The owners maintain their cellar to a very high standard and really understand the ethos of the real ale movement. It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that The Red Lion was recently awarded the 2010 trophy for CAMRA Pub of the Year. This comes in addition to a string of other food accolades including: Award Winning Home-Made Ricotta (Bakewell Show 2009/10), Silver Award for Novice Cheesemaker (International Cheese Awards 2010) and Silver Award Pecorino (Bakewell Show 2010). Popped in on the way back from a cold day out at Alton Towers…read more We got a lovely warm welcome, were quickly seated near a roaring fireplace and settled in for a great meal accompanied by some very well kept Hartington IPA. The pub is cosy and friendly, and in a great location for walkers and cyclists on the Tissington trail. Food very good - starter of roasted tomato soup, then delicious veggie option of braised puy lentils with mash and a Yorkshire pud while Diana's fish pie was unctuous and topped with some outstanding crispy mash. Washed down with a great local pint - grand. Not quite five star fodder but not a million miles off. There's an attached restaurant serving the same grub but didn't explore it as we had muddy boots and had probably sat in sheep poo up on the moor.

It's a charming little pub chock full of classic English heritage. The staff were lovely and accommodating and the selection of ales, ciders and beers were most superb. If you find yourself up in this beautiful neck of the woods (it's literally right in the middle of the picturesque Peak District),I'd highly recommend that you stop in for a Tipple!

Hands down the best place I stayed in all of the UK…read more Coming from America I was so excited to stay in a little country village and just relax. I got everything that I wanted. With just 8 rooms (4 above the pub and 4 located in a cottage just a few steps away) the inn was so quaint. Our room was located in the cottage and it was huge! Also, it was equipped with plenty of water and snacks. The food was also fantastic in the pub. We had dinner both nights we were there and weren't disappointed. May I recommend whatever the soup of the day is and the sticky toffee pudding? YUMMY! Breakfast was also super impressive. The breads, croissants and fresh fruit were so fresh. OH and the service was impeccable. So friendly and accommodating. If you are heading out to Chatsworth House, exploring the Peak District or just want to relax you need to stay here.

This place had good reviews online and was recommended by some local walkers. It's a very nice place. Felt very warm and comfy inside. But since it was a warm summer evening (and 'cause we travel with a dog) we took a table in the nice outside area. We had a beer and a cider for a starter :) For the main we ordered some pork belly w/ mash and a Pie w/ mash. Some beers on the side (and a Gin Tonic later). The pork belly was a good choice, nice and creamy sauce. Tender and crispy on top. The Pie was also nicely done, very rich filling. The mash was a wee bit bland though. Beer and Cider were cold and nice. And they gave me a really good pour on the Gin Tonic. All in all a very good choice when in the area. If for a drink or a whole meal after / during a good walk. Prices are fair, service is fast. After the good meal we headed back to Middleton-By-Youlgreave.

Entering the bar at 5.00 pm, having driven from Edinburgh, we went to book in. The worries started, they couldn't find our name in the book. My mind spun, where is the nearest Travelodge? Caroline, behind the bar, shot off to check. Returning, she rechecked to book to find that the young guy behind the bar, Josh, had the book turned to a week ago. Panic over, a minor glitch. We can laugh at it now. She booked us in, made a reservation for dinner that evening although they were extremely busy. As I pointed out it wasn't a problem as I could have a few pints while we waited. Shown to our room, The Cowshed. At least we didn't get The Pigsty. Nice comfy room. Everything we needed and plenty of space. Bathroom was again adequate but, a problem we have down south also, black mould. Not a complaint but something that maybe could be addressed. Time for dinner. The pub was heaving with regulars and diners. Lovely to see a village pub so full as so many have closed down. Service was brilliant by two young ladies with a continual smile. The food we chose was 'average'. Hunters chicken overcooked to the extent the cheese was hard. Steak and ale pie that was passed its best with dried meat and no ale. The mash was exquisite, in fact not mashed but more pureed. I think the kitchen was overworked that evening. Ice cream to follow. Those scoops were huge. Then a wonderful cafetiere of coffee. All in all, a reasonably nice evening. Night time was wonderful, so quiet and the bed so comfy. Reviewers mentioned the rude landlady. We hadn't met anyone we could class as rude last night. We went for breakfast in a really nice breakfast room to be met by Suzi, the landlady. No way could you describe this lady as rude. Eccentric maybe. A few decibels over the top, yeh. But rude, in no way. Come down south to some place for rudeness. She took our order for breakfast and made sure we had everything we needed. Yeh, she told me off for not finishing all my baked beans LOL. A lovely character. Would we return to The Farmyard? When we visit the area again it is on our list of places to stay and we would recommend this B&B to anyone. Thank you Suzi, Caroline, Josh, the two young girls serving and all those in the kitchen for a really enjoyable stay.
