First things first: it took over an hour for our food to arrive. Although the pub was busy and two of our party ordered suet puddings that require 40 minutes prep, this seemed excessive. Anyway, moving on...
I was pleased to find this place does proper pub grub. There's always a chance that a little country pub has gone a bit 'gastro' and you'll have to battle through a menu with ingredients you don't recognise and eat from a plate with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar on it. Thankfully we found cheese and onion pie, lamb hot pot, beef suet pudding and so on.
I ordered a pint of the local ale from Greenfield Brewery - can't remember the name but it had an owl on the pump clip! - which was very reasonably priced and a good session ale. Food wise I went for the cheese and onion pie, and they were more than happy to swap the advertised beans for some mushy peas (baked beans are the devil).
When the food (finally) arrived I was a bit confused by my cheese and onion pie to be honest. I don't know how best to describe it - it was a thick triangular wedge that didn't look like it had been cut from a whole pie but rather made as an individual slice. Looks aside, it was very delicious, as were the accompanying chips and peas, made better with the addition of mint sauce.
After an enjoyable few hours with a pie and two pints, I left feeling not much lighter in wallet but much heavier in the belly. This place is a great choice if you're in the area. read more
