The Navigation was run by one of our Fisher family members at the beginning of the 20th Century. When we shared this info with one of the owners, Sue, she proceeded to show us a document that listed every person that ran the Navigation over that last several hundred years. Sure enough, there he was, Franklin Fisher. Sue even offered to send me a copy of the document. She also confirmed the location of our 4th G Grandparent's pub, The Tunnel End Tavern- which was in the current location of another hotel in Diggle- that is near the 'tunnel's end'. I wont name it- but the owner was condescending and downright abusive. Sue was lovely- as were almost all the people we met on our journey through Oldham. I can't wait to go back!

In Uppermill there are plenty of pubs to choose from and if you are after doing a pub crawl then you should start here really as it is at the bottom of High Street. It is a great little pub and sells good alcohol and has a friendly atmosphere. I have been here a few times now and I always enjoy myself as the locals are friendly and let me join in on the game of cards or dominoes! It is a family pub and has an enclosed beer garden for those summer months. On Fridays they have a disco and Sunday is karaoke day! It really is a good night out if you fancy a quiet drink with some laughs thrown in!

It was a busy Sunday afternoon as ManU v Liverpool was on the television so the entire town rocked in at about the same time we did. As a result, there was a slight push and shove to get to the bar and our food took a little while to arrive but it was worth it. We managed to score a table in the corner, away from the tvs, and settled in with some excellent local ale. The staff were friendly and took our food orders efficiently and warned us that there was a 40 minute wait for the suet pies. We were ok with this. Unfortunately the 40 minutes turned out to be over an hour but considering the number of people in there and the top quality nosh that arrived at our tables we were happy to wait. It was gooooooood food - big servings of warm, hearty food that you expect from a local pub. We were all patting our bellies by the end of it, feeling very satisfied. Definitely a winner for anyone out walking in the area.

The bar area which has TVs showing the footy got very busy whilst we were there, so your visit might not be as quiet as you'd have hoped. Six hand pumps including three local ales from Greenfield (Silver Owl was a cracking pint) and Millstone breweries are served together with some seriously hearty home cooked food. The portions are generous and everything was delicious. There was a bit of a wait but the quality of the food more than made up for that.

Nevertheless, it still is a good pub and has some fine beers and drinks. It looks grand from the outside and it is inside. At weekends all the pubs in Uppermill are full and this one is no different. They are very strict on I.D so make sure you have it. They have their own parking area which is fantastic in such a small village. They have quiz nights as well and singers at weekends. It really is a good pub but should offer more to its customers. They offer food but I have never tried it as I have never been drawn to eat in here.

On this occasion, however, I was the designated driver so this was more of a reconnaissance visit for my return - and I am going to return as it was excellent here. Given the choice between the restaurant and the brasserie, we chose to sit in the latter - as it would be quieter and you'd get to see said 'Gin Emporium'. You can also get their full menu served here too as well as the bar menu so I'd advise to book in advance as there aren't many tables in this section. Their Signature Menu had apparently been awarded a AA rosette, which is a rare feat - though definitely deserved as we loved both courses. At two courses for £25 or three for £30 it was very reasonable indeed given the quality of the food. You can obviously order lighter snacks from their other menus. Service was warm and friendly - we were well taken care of throughout and not rushed despite how full they were. If it hadn't been chucking it down we'd have gone for a local walk as well - the village of Delph is charming. Tip: on the last Thursday of every month they hold a gin masterclass. Tickets are £15 per person and a light supper is included.

Once we were settled, we decided to order and I chose something I had never really had before and that was a steak filled with feta cheese. When I say it was filled, I mean stuffed. The steak was made into a ball shaped and once you cut into it, steaming hot feta cheese came pouring out. Anyway, this pub is ok. To me it would not pass as a family place at all as it is full of young groups situated in near enough every corner of the place. They have a snooker table which you can never get on and I would not suggest you tried. It is one of them places where your feet stick to the floor! Great? NAH
