It was originally built way back in 1796, so expect low wooden beams, lots of exposed brick and cosy fireplaces in every dining space. The bar is well stocked and as well as three regular beers they have guests from the likes of Phoenix (a brewery based in nearby Heywood). Lots of choice on the food menu, with everything from soup of the day right through to steaks and roasts. Have a look on their specials board for the pie of the day - we had steak and pepper which was not only delicious, but was practically the size of a saucer and coupled with chunky chips, veg and gravy left us unable to talk, let alone get up out of our seats afterwards. Service was friendly throughout and despite us turning up without a reservation (it might be an idea to book a table on weekends) we were seated and served without too much of a wait for our orders. A tip for winter - the pub lacks a porch door, so if you're sitting in this section expect the occasional draught when the door opens. We were well hard and braved it ;) When the weather is more pleasant they have a decent-sized beer garden at the back. If their small car park is full there are plenty of spaces in the layby directly across the road.

I had one of the 'different' dishes, Warm lamb, apricot, cashew n Harissa Salad - it was delicious! My husband had one of their more traditional fayre, sausage, mash & gravy. He thoroughly enjoyed it. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because we waited a while for our meal - around half an hour - but it was definitely worth waiting for!

Open afternoons and evenings, it's a great place to catch up with friends or go for a quick pint before a gig or movie. The front bar is tiny and usually populated by grey haired men nursing a never-ending pint. If you walk down the corridor however, you'll find a cluster of cosy rooms with old velvet seats, copper topped tables and a roaring log fire. There's also a small beer garden which gets rammed in the summer - despite having no views, flowers or atmosphere! Upstairs there's a cosy reception room which local promoters sometimes use for live gigs. I saw Badly Drawn Boy play his first gig here many moons ago and was quietly blown away. If you're coming to a show, get here early or you'll have to choose between queing for a drink or trying to find somewhere to stand. Speaking of liquor, stay clear of the wine - it tastes like battery acid - and stick to their great range of ales, beers, whisky and bourbon.

On a particular night the week before I witnessed a 2am refurb going on, builders were hard at work transforming this particular building into something very appealing. As we walked in a week later, Abel Heywood was born in our reality. What an establishment! Let's get one thing straight, I love the NQ. But, as I've mentioned numerous times in previous reviews, Thomas street on a late Saturday night has begun (unfortunately) to resemble (much like somewhere like Printworks or Deansgate locks) a George Romero film from the 70's. That's exactly how we felt driving through it on our way to Abel. Now Turner street on the other hand has always been my favourite. It's that street in the George Romero film the Zombies haven't discovered yet. So we quietly parked there and tiptoed into the Abel avoiding attention of the Thomas street crowd. And wow, what an oasis. Calming music plentiful booths and comfy couches to sit on and timely bar service with friendly staff. The drinks range I've been told is fairly decent and there's a restaurant and a boutique hotel on the first and second floor respectively. Most of all the chilled out vibe on a saturday night was a clear winner. The seating booths are super comfy with heaters lined in between, which is likely to be a God send in the upcoming winter chill.
