When the large bill came we felt it didn't quite have the wow factor we'd expect at that price point. I think I'd try again but not on a Sunday. At the moment, the much less lauded Hare & Hounds in Mill Brow I think is doing at least as good a job at a slightly lower price.

The traditional open fire type pub had been transformed with a very modern and quirky decor, which in my opinion worked. Very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with attentive (but not overly so) staff. I opted for the chicken liver terrine and marmalade jelly which was well thought out and tasty. I followed this with the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding (had to be done really!). The meat was cooked well and was accompanied by a wide variety of well cooked vegetables. Home-made onion gravy and fiery horseradish cream set it off nicely. Finished the meal off with STP, which was lovely and came with very nice ice cream. My companion opted for the deep-fried mushrooms, which they thought were nice and came with a spicy sweet sauce that complimented it well. Their main of beef hot pot and dumplings was well received (maybe a little too piping hot to eat) but the dumplings were a bit dry, making them hard to eat. They finished their meal with Eton mess which was very nice and came with a variety of fresh fruits. The only small gripe was that the dishes felt a little over worked with garnishes and "food art", as if they were trying a bit too hard to impress, when the food did the talking very nicely for them without it, in my opinion. All in all very nice food and at 55 GBP including 2 drinks was very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend and will be re-visiting again.

There seems to be a good range of food on the menu plus a few specials to choose from. The prices were relatively cheap and my husband enjoyed a Greek lamb dish, whilst I had a small steak, chips and salad. The food was fairly average but the prices were reasonable. The decor is a little tired - seems not uncommon around Hayfield. There is a beer garden outside but we didn't actually see it so I can't comment on this.

We were given a recently redecorated, immaculate, spacious En Suite room replete with snacks, beverage makers and personal toiletries. The room also had a Jacuzzi tub (which we did not use). Returning to the dining room we enjoyed a delicious meal selected from a diverse menu, prepared by the chef/owner, and served by our friendly hosts. After dinner, we retired to a comfortably large bed and enjoyed a restful nights sleep. The following morning we enjoyed a typically large tasty cooked English breakfast before saying goodbye to our hosts. One word of advice. This is not a very well kept secret. Advanced bookings are strongly suggested.
