    Garden veg soup
    Lorene M.

I visited Ladles in James Island for the first time and the LAST time. I was uncertain if you placed tour order at the counter or ordered from a seat in the dining area. We were the only ones in the restaurant and the waitress totally ignored us. She was cleaning, etc. She was an older woman. I asked if I ordered up from or if I should take a seat. She said up front. I walked up front and she took her sweet time to meet me there. I said Hello, and she said....nothing. I told her I wanted an 8 oz She crab soup an 8 oz garden veg soup and 2 waters. She picked up the 8 oz plastic container and said this is the 8 oz size. I said yes. She rolled her eyes and threw it back on the stack. Like it was too small of a portion to buy. When I went to pay she grabbed my credit card out of my hand and put it in the reader that was in front of me. I did not like that and found that extremely rude. The soup was pretty good. The roll served with the soup was very stale. I could hardly break or cut it apart so I didn't eat that. There is no customer service number to call to complain about this woman or I would. This ruined my lunch and I Will NOT return to this location.

Visited Ladels on James Island for the first time. My wife and I had the She Crab Soup and the Garden Vegetable soup. The soups were really flavorful and seasoned just right. We enjoyed the food but the atmosphere was not very friendly. We were not greeted when we entered nor were other customers that came in behind us. The older lady at the checkout acted like she didn't want to be there. She rolled her eyes when my wife chose the 8 ounce soups instead of the 16 ounce soups. While checking out, instead of asking, she grabbed my wifes credit card out of her hand when it didn't scan the first time. There was no follow up after the sale to see if we like the soup or if we needed anything else. A few words of advice....work on your customer interaction, greeting customers, follow up after the sale and by all means be courteous to the customer.

Half pimento cheese and half tomato/mozzarella salad

This location is still really good and consistent with their service and quality. They had changed a few items (from Corporate) such as the bread and type of lettuce used in the tomato mozzarella salad about a year or so ago, but things seemed to have straightened out now. They still have the majority of items that you have become accustomed to, so I don't mean to scare you off if you are experienced with this chain. When I come here, I usually sit inside, but I would bet three quarters of their business is for take-out. They have a drive-up window, so order ahead and it'll be ready when you arrive. Many people just walk in and place large orders...obviously feeding a family or friends elsewhere. If you choose to hang out, they have on tunes for your listening pleasure, as well as a tv, and it's a nice open yet inviting dining area with lots of natural light. As the name would imply, this is mainly a soup and sandwich/salad type place. They specialize in quite a variety and will let you taste samples, or you can get three soups as a meal. You can also get the half and half of your choice. No matter what you choose, it will definitely fill you up and you will have had a fresh wholesome meal.

Grilled cheese and 16 oz. Greek Lemon Chicken soup
    Nicole O.

Ladles has quickly become one of my favorite places to grab a quick, delicious lunch. They have a variety of soups to choose from and a great lunch deal- a grilled cheese, 8oz. soup, and a drink fro $6.95! *They even offer frozen quarts from time to time. On this visit I ordered the grilled cheese and opted for a larger, 16 oz. soup. The grilled cheese is good ol' American cheese melted between two perfectly buttered pieces of thick white bread. It is melty, buttery, and perfect for soup dipping! For the soup, I picked the Greek Lemon Chicken- it is my absolute favorite! It is a chicken broth based soup with small pearls of pasta, fresh green onion, shredded chicken, and feta chunks. To add to all of that- there is a lemon-y goodness of the broth that sounds odd but is simply refreshing! This soup saved my day when I was sick last. My boyfriend was feeling more adventurous than I was that day and ordered the Insanity Burger. This sandwich includes 2 hamburger patties (with cheese in between), sandwiched between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. Insanity! Please see my picture to see the size of this monster. My boyfriend said the cheeseburger itself was one of the best he's had on James Island. The patties had that grilled on a flat top, good grease taste. Come hungry if you want to try this one!

Great soup selections and super nice people. I would say the lobster bisque is possibly the best I've had.

Had a slight kick to it (spice wise) but very little evidence of actual seafood in it. After much debate about what to get for a main course (and after seeing what other patrons got at the bar where I sat), I decided to get the Moroccan salad with salmon. Again...it was good...not great. I cook way better salmon at home on a cedar plank over real charcoal, so maybe I'm being unfair here? I dunno. The salad itself was heavy on arugula, which I'm not a huge fan of. Which is odd, because I love the flavor of pepper! Anyway, the menu made it sound like it was more fennel-oriented, so... Ended up capping off the meal with the blackberry key lime pie. It was quite tasty. Not the best key lime pie I've ever had, but good. As to the atmosphere, it's nice. My girlfriend has actually convinced me several times that we shouldn't come here because we weren't dressed well enough. Well, let me just say: I saw several guys here wearing jeans, fishing shirts, and ball caps and they fit right in. So: not stuffy at all! Bottom line, it's a good, not great place to grab a meal. I love that it's off the beaten path (i.e., not close to Folly Road). Will def come back with my girlfriend next time. Might try the swordfish or maybe the meatballs next time.

They are a burger/oyster bar with a diverse menu that has unique offerings. As far as I know this is the only true oyster bars on the Island. There are plenty of restaurants that serve raw oysters but no with a wide-ranging selection of oysters from various locales. I don't care for raw oysters myself, but I saw a lot being served. We started with cocktails with my wife ordering the "Don't Call It a Skinny" with Tequila, Guava, Lime, Agave, and Lime Salt. They say try it spicy if you are feeling feisty and she was. The drink was light with a wonderful back heat on the end. I enjoyed the Smoked Praline Sour with rye, hazelnut, Montenegro, praline, citrus and bitters with a nice smoke for added flavor. It tasted just like a praline, and I had a tough time getting it back after my wife had a try, We ordered some fried oysters Buffalo style with a ranch sauce for dipping. Being an oyster bar they were very fresh and full of flavor. Our favorite starter was the popular Jam Jar with ricotta cheese and seasonal jam with toasty bread. The jam was tomato and our server gave us a great pro-tip. Empty the bowl it comes in and dump the contents of the jar then swirl the two together then spoon it up on the bread. It was absolutely delicious and can't be missed! We decided to get a couple of burgers which are a mixture of brisket, chuck and short rib. I got the Harlow burger which has American Cheese, Comeback Sauce, Pickles, and Shredded Lettuce. I was pleased that instead of a smash burger which everyone seems to do these days, it was a thick juicy burger. It was so juicy I needed to wipe my hands and mouth after each bite. The comeback sauce was unique and definitely added to the spectacular flavor I was experiencing. Poe's used to be my thick burger go to and they have been dethroned! My wife chose the Southern Roots with Bacon, Pimento, Shredded Lettuce, and Pickled Green Tomatoes. It was obvious that the pimento cheese was homemade and packed with cheesy goodness. The fries were perfect burger fries being neither steak nor shoestring but just perfectly crispy and light, similar but better than McDonalds in every way. Zach, the general manager came over to chat for a bit and offer us a complimentary cocktail to try. The Section 112 was Bourbon, tarragon, preach, bitters, and a streusel foam. They purposely leave out a straw so that you taste that foam with each sip. I couldn't have had a better time. Friendly service that was top notch. Drinks that were creative as well as fulfilling and food that will linger in my collective memories for a long time. You need to make a reservation as they are so popular that walk ins may have a tough time.

But luckily I was craving seafood when I left Hyams, so I decided to to give CudaCo a shot. As soon as you walk in the door, you can tell it's not your typical seafood market. There's a room of wines for sale, beer, and a few dining tables. Then there's the fresh catch display case... And I must say, their selection is consistently great. The quality and freshness is top notch. And they usually have some hard to find fresh catch. What makes CudaCo stand out from other markets is that you can pick your desired catch from the display case and then have them cook it to your liking. Everything that I've had was literally foot stomping good. And to add to that, they also offer frozen seafood, premade dips, and many other items in the freezer section. Was prob the worst fried flounder I've ever had, to be completely honest. But that's not why I give this place such a low rating. It's the service. Both times I've been here - the first time to eat there and the second time to just buy some fresh fish to cook at home - the people who worked there have been borderline rude. Maybe rude is the wrong word. Personality-less might be a better descriptor. There was a major vibe of - "what do you want...because you're bothering me..." if that makes sense. Contrast that with Crosby's down the road (heading towards Folly Beach on the right) and the difference is STARK. Crosby's people are *always* so nice and helpful. Can't tell you how many times I've struck up a conversation about what I was buying and how I was planning to cook it at Crosby's. CudaCo, on the other hand, is cold and their staff seems completely indifferent about their customers. It's why I never go there anymore and I tell everyone I know to avoid it like the plague. Bottom line, save your time and money and go to Crosby's instead. Life's too short to be treated the way CudaCo treats their customers.
