Covid-19 Review #7 Don't tell anyone but needles scare me! It's my second time coming to this location. Once before the pandemic started to shut everything down in San Diego. Despite having to be poked twice both times I didn't get a bruise and my experience was good. I have small veins that roll. I never know when it's a good time to tell the phlebotomist this. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't. Both times Phil and Joe were working and it seems they have a good working relationship. Before you go: You can schedule a visit online or walk-in. Both times I did walk-in. There are self-check-in tablets. You need your insurance information and your ID. It will be easier if you have a hard copy of your lab slip. The second time I had it in my email. The Wi-fi service there isn't too good. I had to step out of the office in order to get service. They accept health account spending account cards, debit cards, or credit cards. This location is closed for lunch from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm. Inside: The first time I went over half of the seats were taken. It took almost 30 minutes to be seen. The second time I was the only patient there. I wondered if they were doing testing for Covid-19 and Joe said no. There are several chairs inside, a water dispenser (the cups were removed), and posted paper explaining how they are taking precautions of Covid-19. Patient Experience: Joe and Phil do great explaining the process. Joe and Phil take turns helping check people in and administering the tests. Overall: This is in a convenient location for me. There is a decent amount of parking. I enjoy the small talk Phil and Joe offer and the banter they have towards each other. If my doctor needs another blood test I plan to return to this location.

Mr. Healthcare Staff, your mask needs to cover your nose too.

While tradition HIV testing like the Rapid Test detects HIV by detecting antibodies, the Early Test detects infection by detecting the virus. One can get both tests performed and both are FREE. Results of the standard Rapid Test will be given within 15 minutes while the Early Test results will take two weeks. The doctor will provide a personalized ID number along with a date to check for the results online (https://theearlytest.ucsd.edu/The_Early_Test/Results_of_The_Early_Test_HIV_Antibody_%26_HIV_Viral_Load_Testing_in_San_Diego,_California.html ) or by phone. For HIV testing at this site, I find it best to make an appointment. Find parking on the street; there's usually plenty within a three block radius on Park Blvd. Lead The Way is hard to miss, it's literally across from the Crypt (http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-crypt-san-diego-2#hrid:If-S8-HYtS143l9lASWtqQ/src:self ). Lead The Way is very different from the two other places I've been to get tested before (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ucsd-antiviral-research-center-san-diego#hrid:4JuCu7uiyaw-lTRY70QAuQ/src:self ). When they say they're trying to banish the sigma of HIV testing, they mean it. It's an intensely relax atmosphere. The decor is modern and definitely sets the mood they're going for. There's one computer station to surf the internet while waiting. I got in right away with my appointment and the whole thing took 30 minutes. After explaining the consent forms and procedure, they pricked my finger for the rapid test. The results are faster than the mouth swap by 10-20 minutes. During the 10-15 minutes waiting time for the results, the worker asked me further questions about my sexual practices and explained things if I needed it. It wasn't my first time at the rodeo, so I didn't really need much explanation. Then, I got my rapid results and was taken into a room to get my blood drawn for the Early Test. Done and done. PS Note that there are limits to every test and know what the results are telling you. While the Early Test detects recent infection well, the Rapid Test detects a wider time frame. It's important to pick the appropriate test for your possible exposure time frame. I like to do both for the overlap.

Luckily, a friend recommended this wonderful nurse practitioner, who can perform nearly any health-maintenance service one might need, with the imprimature of a doctor as backup. Exams are less stressful, rates are reasonable; she listens well, and takes good notes. Office visits are empathic, fact-finding conversations. How wonderful to be actually taken seriously! How refreshing to not be repeatedly tested for diseases we can't possible have, just because that's the clinic's (or hospital's) standard ($$) procedure. If you've ever had to call and call and call ... and call ... to get your lab results - you need to consider switching health-care providers! And you won't give up quality of care at this small clinic, either. UCSD had misdiagnosed my wife for years; they kept treating her for the wrong condition. They ignored all evidence she presented them that was contrary to their diagnosis. When her test results kept getting worse, not better, UCSD's only answer was ... to increase the dosage! When she told them she was going to stop taking the expensive medicine, since it wasn't helping, they made a note in her medical record, labeling her a "difficult patient" to deal with (in other words, a hysterical, unreasonable person)--virtually guaranteeing that other doctors wouldn't take her seriously, either. Yet on her first visit to Progressive, she was tested for things that UCSD never even considered testing for--and bingo! A new diagnosis, new medicine, and changes in diet have made my wife feel like a whole new woman.

I had tried almost every form of birth control on the market and had finally removed my copper IUD after 1.5 years of the worst pain I ever been physically and mentally. Doctors threw pills and vague ideas at me like a dart board hoping it would stick with little concern for the issues I was voicing about my body. I was ready to give up but I can't verbalize enough how grateful I am I didn't. I had never felt so seen, validated and heard by a doctor I was blown away. We did blood work, came up with a plan, and she aided me in changing my lifestyle habits as well as prescribing supplements to get where I wanted to be with my physical and mental health. As someone who has had diagnosed anxiety and depression since I was a teenager (I am 30 now), so 15 years, I healed my nervous system in ways I didn't think possible with her help. She is incredibly kind, knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely listens to both what I want from my care and what I know about my own body. What stands out most is her willingness to problem-solve with me rather than expecting me to endure discomfort. I have had hundreds of infusions and have experienced nerve pain from IVs repeatedly. Not one previous doctor or nurse had ever found a way to help with it. Dr. Rosas gave me hand warmers during my infusion, and it took away the nerve pain. After years of being expected to simply tolerate that pain, having someone notice it, care about it, and find a solution was incredibly meaningful. The treatment chair was also too short for me to lie comfortably, so she created a setup that better supported my body. This reflects how she approaches care overall: when something is not working, she listens, believes me, and looks for a solution. Because I have many medication allergies and sensitivities, she also works with a compounding pharmacy to create medication options that I can tolerate. I have already noticed significant improvement in only three weeks of working with her. She is especially patient and compassionate when I am overwhelmed or dysregulated. I do not feel pressured to hide what I am experiencing or push through an appointment in a way that is harmful to me. She makes accommodations with kindness and without making me feel difficult for needing them. I also deeply appreciate that Dr. Rosas wears a mask and that the office is clean. Those details make accessing care feel much safer and more comfortable for me. Dr. Payam Zand has also been very kind and welcoming, and my overall experience with the practice has been extremely positive. Dr. Rosas combines medical knowledge with patience, creativity, compassion, and genuine respect for the person receiving care. She does not just provide treatment; she works to make treatment accessible, tolerable, and individualized. I am incredibly grateful for her care and highly recommend her.
