Gateway to the a beautiful past

AwwLa Venecia, more than a 100 years old. 42 years ago(from this year 2019) two brothers inherent the tradition of their grandparents and father, to go and have some Manzanilla wine at this particular bar. As their parents did, they also got together with their collage friends and enjoy life with the things that really matter, friendship, wine and some good tapas:) Unfortunately, the owner of that time was taken illed and his children were no longer interest in the family business. So the two brothers decided to drop out of collage and venture as entrepreneurs and keep their traditional bar and make their favorite get together spot, their business and way of life. Walking in La Venecia, is like walking through a time portal that takes you 100 years back. The smell, the amazing atmosphere in their wine is a testament of history and Spanish traditions. But above all, it stands up for human passion and the power of dreaming. Thanks to Nacho and his brother, I was able to experience one of the most unique places I have ever been to. You can really stand here for hours and see people from all ages and countries interact with the locals and see how it was decades ago and how a new generation of locals are being born in to this beautiful tradition. If you are in Madrid, La Venecia is not just a bar, is an interactive museum were you can stop time and savor the most amazing Manzanilla wine and the powerful aroma and taste of an Oloroso wine. Is a MUST! You will thank me :) so, you are welcome!

Love love love this small, old-time, cash-only sherry and tapas bar. Olives are free with a drink. Small selection of other traditional tapas. They close from 2:30 to reopen at 7:30. Easy place to stop in for a 15 min quick drink, or stay longer. Excellent value but cash only. Love how they write you tally on the bar in chalk.

This place was on my list. Unfortunately, ALL sherries were dry.

Note: Old School joint where *I believe* you have to just go to the bar yourself and order. I don't think orders are taken at the table, as per my experience. I don't know anything about sherries and I thought that I was going to be educated here. However, the bartender, who I assumed to be the owner as well, doesn't speak English, so I did have some troubles ordering. I believe there was another younger guy working, but we were never approached so just seated ourselves and I made my way to the bar myself. I tried to ask the owner/bartender the cost of a flight, which ones were sweet, and it became apparent that his English wasn't very good. Luckily, an English-speaking man who was next to me explained there were NO SWEET SHERRIES on the menu. He let me try his manzanilla and omg, it was soo dry! Since I was kinda embarrassed, I felt obligated to order something. And some olives accompanied the drink. My drink was like 2EU. Thanks to the kind stranger who talked me out of a flight 'cause it wouldn't have been something that I would've enjoyed! P.S. This place is soo Old School that the owner doesn't accept tips!

Simple and to the point. Lots of sherry, do not attempt to order any other drink! Bar has quite the charm to it. We also really enjoyed the olives!

Rustic, antique, simplicity ! This is my kind of place ! Sherry and tapas. We started with amontillado & palo cortado with olives on the house. We ordered Cecina & manchengo cheese. So good we came back the next night and had 4 more amontillado !!! So good!!!

Came here for a trip in the summer and was brought here by a friend, highly recommend trying the vermouth! It is quite dark inside and slightly crowded being a small place but still amazing.

I truly have to highlight Pepe, Franco, and Grace for taking the time to speak to us and get to know us. The food was FANTASTIC. Everything was fantastic, but the Sangria was spectacular, (probably one of the best sangrias I've ever had). At the end of our meal, Pepe brought us two liquor de Limon shots, which made our whole night!! Definitely recommend this place in the La Latina neighborhood. You won't regret it!

It has that classic bustling tapas bar energy where everyone is close enough to feel like part of one big conversation. The food was the highlight. The clams were flavorful and fresh, the octopus was cooked beautifully and the paella was delicious. It is a great place to stop in for a drink and a quick bite, especially if you want something authentic and lively. When we visited, it was packed to the point where you were shoulder to shoulder with other guests and close enough to easily hear the party next to you. It adds to the charm if you enjoy that classic crowded European dining atmosphere, but it is something to keep in mind if you prefer more space.

Service was in Spanish or English, and they were patient with my poor Spanglish butchery. Everyone was friendly. Service was paced to be leisurely but it was not slow. Inside was cool on a hot day and decor was upscale. I wouldn't roll in wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt but there was outside seating in the plaza outside. Not that we even considered it that day, evening would have been a different story. The area has a lot to see if you want to wonder around and then swing in or take your time after. This will definitely be a regular stop when we are in Madrid. The restaurant is located in the heart of Madrid on a very cute street, and it is easy to find and walk there if you stay in the city center. The place is not very big - both times I went there for lunch, there were no tables available, so I had to sit at the bar; once I even had to wait about 7 minutes until one bar spot became free. The restaurant's design is simple, but pretty and lovely. Overall, the restaurant is in very good condition and was perfectly clean both times I visited. The only small downside is that the place is quite noisy, but it did not bother me. One of the best things about this place is the people who work there - both a guy and a lady at the bar were extremely nice and friendly to me; plus, both spoke very good English. They gave me recommendations on what to try, and I followed their advice. The restaurant's menu is not big, but it has all the most popular traditional Spanish dishes. Both times I ordered Rabo de Toro (a traditional Spanish stew), Fardos (squid rolls with bacon and squid ink mousse); and once I also tried croquetas de jamón (ham croquettes). The croquettes were tasty - I loved their flavor and soft texture. One portion includes 6 pieces, and they are quite big and filling. It was my first time trying Fardos (I ordered a 1/3 portion), and it was a great experience - the dish turned very delicious after the bartender mixed it for me. The squid was cooked very nicely, and combined with the fresh bacon and ink mousse, it tasted fantastic. Rabo de Toro (I ordered a 1/2 portion) was also my first time trying this dish, and I loved it - the stew was perfectly cooked, very soft and moist, with rich flavors, and it melted in my mouth. The restaurant also offers a wide variety of drinks, especially wines. I do not drink alcohol, so I was recommended to try grape juice - Mosto, which was extremely flavorful and tasted like fresh pressed grape juice, even though it came from a glass bottle. I loved that drink! Price-wise, all items on the menu seemed reasonable. I paid €8 for 6 ham croquettes, €12 for a half portion of Rabo de Toro, €8 for a 1/3 portion of Fardos, and €3 for one glass of grape juice. It is possible to have a nice full lunch here for around €22, which is reasonable for a restaurant in the heart of Madrid. The place accepts all major credit cards and Apple Pay, which is a big plus. If you visit this restaurant, I strongly recommend trying 1/3 or 2/3 portion of Fardos, a half portion of Rabo de Toro, and their grape juice Mosto - it's enough food to feel full and experience traditional Spanish flavors.

I ordered the Oxtail (Rabo de Toro) and wooooow... easily one of the most tender and delicate pieces of meat I've EVER had. They serve it boneless, but I'm pretty sure if they would have provided a bone, it would've fallen right off. The whole place gives cozy tavern vibes with a rustic interior that feels perfectly Madrid. NOTE: the portions are a bit heavier than most spots. I hate to waste food, especially when it's as immaculate as the Oxtail, but if you're a party of one, you got to do what you go to do.
