two bowls of guacamole and a bowl of salsa
    Sarah F.

I was in Bloomington for work, and asked a local where would be a good place to take a group, and they recommended la una cantina. I'm glad I decided to host my alumni dinner here! The service was great! Especially for a group of our size. I enjoyed two house margaritas. We had a delicious trio of dips! Salsa, guac and queso. For my main course I had tacos, the la piscado, el pastor and pork chochinita. All of the tacos were flavorful and delicious! I'd certainly visit again given the chance!

Spicy Margarita! Yes please if you like some spice in your drink this one will definitely deliver!

La Una Cantina has a modern Mexican ambiance with beautiful lighting, decorative walls, and bumping music. There is plenty of seating from smaller booths, tables, high tops, and larger group areas. There is (paid) street parking available nearby. Beware that around 9PM on Fridays a long line forms outside. Our overall dining experience was positive! The waiter we had was very kind and willing to offer his recommendations. We started off with the Dip Trio. The Queso was delicious, Guacamole could have used a bit more salt, and Salsa was okay (my husband enjoyed more than me - it tasted too much like tomatoes than salsa). For our main course my husband got 4 tacos. He absolutely LOVED the Carnitas. It had amazing flavor and the perfect amount of spice. I got the new Birria Tacos and they were delicious. It came with plenty of meat and consomé to dip them in.

You must try this. If you're looking for a different experience other than traditional Mexican where everything is just fried and coded in liquid cheese, this is your place. I got the street taco sampler platter. There were three different types and they used really cool ingredients like pineapple and cilantro. It was kind of an exciting meal. Street Taco Platter Choice of three tacos: Al Pastor, Carne Asada and/or Carnitas Served with arroz verde or frijoles negros (gf) The rice was also totally different. It was not your traditional red fried rice. It is callled arrow verde...don't know what it means but it was delicious. It seem to be some type of natural green rice with different seasonings than tradition Mexican rice. My dad got the sweet potato enchilada and swears it is the best food he has ever had at a Mexican restaurant. We didn't get to sample the tequila because it was mid afternoon but there is a huge variety for you to try which could be fun instead of a winery if you like to try new things. I wish I could give a gold star two places that are so outside of the norm. This would get a gold star.

I've been a couple of times for lunch and really like the beef and chicken enchiladas. A lot of Mexican restaurants have large portions but their food is not great. The portions here are not huge but I feel their food quality is higher. It was not very busy the times I've went for lunch and service was great and quick. I love taco Tuesday's here. They have $2 specials on their pork, beef, fish, chicken mole, and chicken tinga tacos. In my opinion, the beef and chicken tinga is pretty plain in terms of toppings so I like the others more. Their tacos are a generous size so 2-3 are a decent amount for an entree. There is a parking garage nearby and it is only $0.50 an hour to park there. Great spot for Mexican food!

Always a great experience every time we walk in the door! Juan Carlos is absolutely amazing and makes you feel like you are his #1 priority! The food is always delicious, the drinks are always fantastic, the servers are so friendly and the atmosphere is superb!

    - Trio Dip Platter 9.3/10 this was absolutely amazing. The queso was great (little thick), beautiful guac, and very delicious salsa. - BlackBerry Marg 5/10 brutally sweet. - Chicken Tinga Taco 8.9/10 once again this slapped. Got really soggy and tortilla fell apart but the meat was so juicy I can't be mad

We had a party of 13 for a birthday. Although our waitress was amazing and nice I think she needed some help. The place was packed for good reasons the food is absolutely amazing. With that being said she is only one person and had so many tables to wait on. We ran out of water and no one else would help her. We had to go ask for water. The restaurant was decorated very well. The bathroom could have been cleaned better. There was no tissue in the bathroom I had to go and ask for tissue. Now for the food, it was superb. We started off with the trio queso, guacamole and salsa. Omg the guacamole was to die for. It was spicy but so so good and you get portions 10/10 recommend getting the trio. I ordered a torta. I love a good torta and let's just say it didn't disappoint me. I also got a mango pineapple margarita and my friend got a strawberry banana they were both amazing!!! We did receive our food in a timely manner. No one had any complaints about their food. It's a family friendly restaurant until about 10. After 10 it turned into a club. You have to be 21 to enter.

Great food, great atmosphere! Their queso is hands down one of my favorites in the area. I always order the cheese quesadilla and have never been disappointed with the flavor or quantity! I also got the strawberry margarita which was delicious as well! My only complaint is they're extremely slow. We did go on cinco de Mayo this time which I understand they were extremely busy, but this lack of speediness happens every time. It took probably 20 minutes for our waiter to even address us. After that, we ordered our drinks and then waited another 20-25 minutes to have him ask for our food order. At that point, I asked a question and he answered and then mumbled something and walked away. Then we waited probably another 10-15 minutes for him to come back. I was going to order another drink but we didn't see him until like a half hour after getting our food. All in all, the food and drinks are good but make sure you have enough time & be prepared to wait for awhile after being seated.

$2 Taco Tuesdays is where it's at. All of the taco flavored are delicious! Chips and salsa are also good, although not complimentary (~$3). I've also had the green rice and it's very tasty. I love the aesthetics of the place, but the few times I've ever been there's been construction done outside or something being done on the inside and so it's not always the quietest. However, food is always on point.

great food and drinks, our waiter was amazing, the atmosphere is fantastic. try the spicy margarita.

Great Mexican spot in the heart of Bloomington. The mezcal margarita and spicy jalapeño margarita were excellent! Favorite taco here was the pescado.

Without the patio open though, I can see it filling up easily. The atmosphere is fun (board games!) and bright but somewhat industrial with the distillery next door. The staff was friendly and very enthusiastic but just a little overbearing for me. The samples they brought around of two of their spirits (a gin and amaro) were very good and much appreciated. As appealing as the cocktails sounded, I didn't feel like drinking, so I got the Last Call mocktail. I couldn't pick up much 5 spice, but it was still a pleasant and refreshing light drink. I had a sip of my parents' old fashioned and Smokin' in the Girls' Room, and those were both really good - I was really into the lapsang souchong tea-infused rum in the Smokin' in the Girls' Room and would've ordered it for myself if I'd been drinking. To eat, I had a mushroom melt (the veganized version with vegan cheese) with the OMG fries. I really liked the sandwich; I loved the giardiniera and the jus, and you usually can't get that sort of thing in a vegetarian or vegan sandwich, so I was really happy to have it here and thought it was done well. The OMG fries were also really good. I don't like fries if they're plain, but these were heavily seasoned with a delicious spice blend. The vegan version of the fries omits the truffle aioli that they normally come with, but they were plenty flavorful with just ketchup. We shared a Thai tea creme brulee for dessert. I am crazy about Thai tea so I expected to like this, and it was everything I hoped for. The tea flavour was nice and strong, and the tapioca pearls were a nice little enhancement. They do an auto-gratuity of 20% no matter the party size, which I'm not completely opposed to, but I think if you're doing that you at least need to have a note on the menu rather than have the waiter tell you as they're giving you the bill, or better (in my opinion) to just raise the prices by 20% and sell yourself as a no-tipping restaurant. But it wasn't a huge deal in this situation; our waitress was good and we would've left a good tip anyway.

We loved the atmosphere though - the building is kind of interesting and the decoration was very classy. Maybe the main area was a little loud, but we ended up seated in a semi-private room with one other table, so we had relative quiet. It was dim but not in a bad way. All of the staff was very friendly. Our waiter was attentive and enthusiastic but didn't come across as trying to upsell us. Drinks were excellent. I usually just go for beer, but the cocktail menu looked really interesting, so I got a cocktail was very glad I did. I got the rye-based "boss fight", which was very strong with unique, complex flavours. I also had many sips of my dad's earl grey cocktail - also very interesting and delicious - and my mom's "problem child" with non-alcoholic gin. They have a really nice non-alcoholic drink menu with different NA spirits too. Food was equally excellent. We got the muhammara appetizer, I had the butternut agnolotti for my entreee, and we shared a chocolate and a vanilla-cranberry bread pudding for dessert. My dad said the muhammara was one of the best dips he's ever had. The middle eastern flavour was a little different from stuff you usually get at American restaurants, and it was presented very nicely with different garnishes. The blue cheese cream sauce on the agnolotti was also a little different and really complimented the flavour of the squash. The bread pudding may have been the best bread pudding I've had in a restaurant - it was very moist but wasn't too sweet or too rich. The chocolate cake was kind of like an oreo cake with the thick vanilla frosting and cookie crumbs - not your generic chocolate cake with white frosting, but conventional enough that I think it would make anyone happy. Maybe the portions of the entrees alone are a little small, but I think they were the right size to enjoy along with a shared appetizer and dessert. Considering that, the prices are okay for upscale dining.

I've enjoyed food, beverages, and a tour of the distillery at Cardinal Spirits before, so I jumped at the chance to sign up for the event. The bar/dining area served as the spot for Fuzzy Zoeller, Champion Pro Golfer, to speak about his line of Ultra Premium Vodka. He highlighted a few special moments in the history of his business and seemed excited to be bringing the production of the high end vodka to Indiana. He also introduced State Senator Ron Alting, a long time friend, who had worked with Fuzzy over the years to help bring opportunities to be involved around the state. After the introduction and chats, guests were treated to a free cocktail made with the vodka. I ordered a "Fuzzy's Mule" which adds lime and ginger beer to the spirit. Excellent! The fine folks at Cardinal Spirits also provided an assortment of delicious foods for us to snack on. There were meatballs, vegan sliders, Italian green salad, caprese skewers, and Deviled eggs with truffle oil. I need to make a point to bring friends here for dinner! I enjoyed the opportunity to attend the event and hope that the transition of production to Cardinal Spirits will go smoothly bringing the same high quality product but using Hoosier corn, and talent.
