a bowl of seafood and vegetables

We went on a Friday night. (during a snow storm ). Of course, there was not a lot of people. The waitress was so kind and friendly. But what amazed me more was that the food looked exactly like their advertising photos. Posting a photo that I took of my actual dinner.

Fine Mexican dining, near West Vernor and Springwells in Southwest Detroit.

Today's Review of the Day for Detroit featured this restaurant. On a Sunday afternoon, I arrived and parked in their attended parking lot. We walked in at 1pm, and by quarter after, there was a line waiting the be seated. That was resolved quickly, as they were actually a group waiting for a large seating to be readied. Miri was our waitress this afternoon. She was pleasant and stopped by many times to check on things. She took drink orders and returned with chips and salsa. The chips were fresh ( I think they utilize the latest in chip technology - if you look closely, there is an expiration date next to the little bar code on the corner of each chip ;-) . The salsa was very good, as well. When the drinks arrived, we were ready to order. I sure wish this had been a Chinese restaurant, because then I could have asked for a #8 dinner. But instead, I simply pointed to one of the shrimp dinners listed (calling out spicy in the description). When it arrived, I knew it was going to be good, and it was. I didn't have time to snap a picture and post it - as a member of the Clean Plate Club, I had work to do - maybe next time. The entertainment was an Hispanic singer who sung nothing but Spanish songs. Every once in a while, I would hear accordion music starting to play, and once there was even a tuba - so naturally, I expected a nice German polka to break out when the Oom-Pa-Pa band started playing. Alas, after hearing him sing about his broken heart and tears, I should have realized he didn't know any German songs. How good was his singing? He got a couple women to get up from the table and dance. Was it as loud as others have written? Well, let's just say I was glad to be sitting at the back of the room. Yeah, they could turn it down a little. Still, the entertainment was lively and pleasing. Looking around the dining area, I saw many Hispanic families seated, as families. It was great to see the kids well-behaved, unlike many dining places these days where kids do not display any sense of manners or discipline. Most of the adults were dressed up in their Sunday best. Again, it was pleasing to see. The only drawback to the whole visit was when I had occasion to use the restroom. A leaking fresh water supply made for a wet floor. An experienced journeyman plumber could really make a difference in there, as I did not see evidence of such skills in the current layout. I cannot report on the women's restroom, because I was a little timid about going in there. What a great dining experience! I will return!

    What I had ordered

I ordered 6 food items for me and child to try and only got 2 items from my order I tried calling and the only person that spoke English said there was nothing they could do about it and hung up on me after I told her I placed a second order I had to call back and let her know how hurt I was she did that I wasn't trying to complain about it but please make sure all my food is in the bag this time please and she said ok I wanted to leave a review on the food but the instead I have to write about the customer service

    Shrimp and octopus cocktail
    Leslie P.

I had the MOST amazing meal at LaTerraza. The food and beverages were out of this world. Our shrimp and octopus cocktail was delicious and overflowing with seafood. The ceviche was perfectly seasoned with whole shrimp. I left a very clean plate after powering through the amazing tacos, but thankfully left room for dessert--silky flan and churros that I'll be dreaming about. Horchata (rice water) was a lovely companion to the food until I sampled the watermelon margarita--WOW. The service was gracious. I had the pleasure of meeting the chef/owner and his wife. He is welcoming and incredibly talented. She is warm and charming. And, they have live music on the weekends. I will definitely be back. Gracias.

    Blue Margarita was tasty...

Music was a little loud but very authentic and service was fast. Lots of room if you have a big party. Also, lots of seafood options!

    Tostada de ceviche

Let me start this review by paraphrasing something from Lost. 'Stop asking questions, because the answers will only lead to more questions'. I'm so confused, but that doesn't come as something new to most of you. Maybe its senility setting in; maybe I'm just into the food thing a bit deeper than I want to admit. Today I went on a taco truck search for ceviche. Instead of finding a taco truck, I ended up at La Terazza. I'm in search for the perfect ceviche and supposedly based on all the review of fellow Yelpers out there, La Terraza has it. One tostada de ceviche, one taco al pastor, one pollo taco. Please! Let's start with the tacos. These were standard faire Mexican Town tacos; 2 corn tortillas, al pastor or pollo, cilantro, onion. The al pastor was good, but not exceptional while the pollo had a rich, smoky flavor to it that I really liked. Putting a shot of lime on each with a small amount of loose guacamole on the pollo made perfect sense. Now let's move on to the ceviche and begin asking questions. - Why was this ceviche different from the ceviche that I experienced at Los Dos Amigos? I'm not talking that they were seasoned slightly different; they were like night and day. Amigos was a red pepper sauce with some seafood and veggies while this was chopped fish with lime and something else to help hold it together and a small amount of mild cocktail sauce 'swizzled" over the top. - Which ceviche is authentic? - How is it supposed to be prepared? - What type of fish and veggies are to be used? - What is the correct ration of liquid to solid? - What liquid is supposed to be prepared in? - Is it supposed to be hot or cold? - What is the meaning of the source of light at the center of the island?... Ooops wrong review. This tostada was totally different from the last one I tried and I really find it hard to compare the two samplings. I liked both for different things. I like La Terraza's because it had lots of fish, and 3 instead of 2 pieces of avacado. Of course, it was also $1.00 more expensive, but still a bargin at $1.95. What I missed from my last try of ceviche was the "spice". This was flavorful, but mild, my last was "hot" and made my tongue tingle. So which is correct? I guess I need to find yet another place to try ceviche. Overall though, La Terraza seems to be a nice place. They serve a wide variety of seafood and service was very good. As far as the chips and salsa that were served - "meh". The chips tasted like they were out of a bag and the salsa's were somewhat on the bland side. This is not a good place to carry on a conversation. The music that played through the restaurant was extremely loud, but I did notice that they have karaoke, although no liquor license, so the unbuttoning the shirt, showing off the gold chains, and "pretending to be on American Idol" is something that won't come too easy. . I'll give this place another try, I was intrigued by some of the ways that they presented their fish dishes, but my quest for the perfect ceviche continues... First I need to find out what ceviche is supposed to be.

This is probably the worst service I've ever had, so unorganized, my food was cold and some of the waiters had an attitude.

There was a 2 top table at the back that we were seated at - we could have sat at the bar also - and it was a great spot. We ordered the tasting menu and WOW, every course was amazing. I'll post pics because the presentation was gorgeous for each item. They have a small cocktail and wine and beer selection, but that was fine. My son got their Shrub Mocktail and I got the Shrub with Sake. Both were delicious and so interesting. I can't pick a favorite item because they were all so good, but the Torched Mackerel and Poached Bosc Pear were tied for #1, followed by the Salmon, Oysters and the crazy good Blood Orange dessert. The shrimp toast was just ok for me, not bad, just not as good as everything else. Additionally the service was outstanding. For a tiny place they did everything right. They explained each course, brought out fresh utensils for every course - YEA! - and made sure we had good pacing. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and enhanced our meal. I really want to come back and try the oysters and some of the tinned items. I'm so excited I found Mink and will be back for sure.

If everything is as good as what we ordered this time, I can't wait to try more! Firstly, the natural lighting in here is just fantastic, and I really like the layout - you have a bit more space than some of the other downtown restaurants, and it's fairly quiet. Nice cozy booth seating as well as chairs. The gated parking lot is also a huge plus downtown and service was absolutely excellent. We came on a Sunday to try their all day happy hour, and it did not disappoint. $2 oysters meant that we ordered 2 dozen, and while the east coast varieties tend to be our favorite, their west coast selection was also top notch. Just lovely, salty, briny fresh oysters with a great mignonette. We also both ordered dirty martinis, and they're perfect for $8. We also had the focaccia which comes with this amazing tomato pesto - it tasted like pizza concentrated into a sauce. Yum! And the focaccia is perfect - the kind of bread that makes you remember why bread is so good. Pillowy and soft inside, toasted crispy outside; an amazing app. For dinner, we had the squid ink and seafood pasta, the wild striped bass and the lamb. Everything was absolutely so delicious and perfectly cooked. They split the pasta for us, which was very nice, and I just can't get over the delicious unique flavor of that dish. Outstanding. This pasta is the kind of pasta you want to order when you go out. Lots of yummy seafood, perfectly seasoned al dente pasta, savory sauce. The bass was the most perfectly cooked piece of fish I've had in a long time - crispy skin, tender moist flesh, buttery sauce. And lastly, I was super impressed with the lamb - it was tender yet crispy on the edges, savory and satisfying. If a seafood restaurant is doing lamb this well, I've got to see what else they have to offer. Can't wait to try the tasting menu. Even hubby was impressed and had zero complaints about anything, and he's tough to please. What a gem of a restaurant.

My first impression: Noisy! Lots of hard surfaces. Difficult to hear the hostess, server and my wife. The tables were appropriately spaced for diners and servers to work with no bump & grind. We started by sharing a dozen oysters and the pear/walnuts salad. The oysters were a bit small-ish; but otherwise, excellent. Server took a drink order from my wife, but skipped me. Eh? I flagged down another server to order a Pino. It took a surprisingly long time to arrive. On the plus side, I was offered a taste to insure it was satisfactory - it was. The pear salad w/walnuts was excellent. The pears were sliced paper-thin. One of the joys of eating a properly ripened pear is the juicy explosion and thinly sliced pears defeat the juicy explosion. If the pears were fully ripe, perhaps cube them? Weirdly; the two sides (mushrooms, potatoes) were served before the entrees. The server noticed, seemed surprised and withdrew the sides, returning with our entrees (lamb shoulder, steak). Then the side returned. Both entrees were warm-ish and the sides were hot. The 14-day, dry-aged steak was ordered medium-rare and was seasoned and prepared as ordered. Again; warm-ish, not hot. I expected better beefy flavor for a dry-aged steak. One end was a bit chewy. Tenderness improved as I got to the other end of the steak. I ordered it with horseradish. I will admit to being a weirdo who loves spicy horseradish (and wasabi) that will clean the sinuses - this was "Ohio-spice'd" horseradish ... not creamy, but less spicy than Arby's Horsey sauce. The mushroom and the potato sides were served hot from the kitchen. Both were excellent, no complaints. The presentation of the steak needs improvement. It was a properly prepared, lonely lump of brown, served on a white plate with cracked ceramic glaze. The lamb shoulder was the better entree. For some reason, my wife was expecting Middle Eastern seasoning. The menu did not mention Middle Eastern seasoning and she did not ask, so that's on her, not the kitchen. I thought it was excellent. Gripe: After the entrees arrived, our server did not return to ask if the entrees were satisfactory. She did return later to ask if we wanted a second round of drinks. We did ... We were offered dessert and ordered, but never asked if we wanted coffee or an after dinner drink. Both desserts were excellent. Will we return? Probably ... not. With tip; dinner for two was $286. At this price point I expect better: Less noise, better beef and flawless service.

Starting with the maître D, carried over to both the waitress and our table server, everyone was polite, courteous, and very attentive. Looking over the list of appetizers, we went with the calamari. About 10 minutes later, it showed up and as it turned out, the portion was good for the four of us. The calamari was not rubbery, but prepared exactly how you would want it. It has a bit of a kick to it, but not so much as to be overwhelming. Before the calamari they brought us a bread basket with four types of breads for us to dip into a bowl of delicious tasting sauce. Because this was a pregaming event, we had to include a cocktail with our dinner. Two of us went with a Woodford reserve old-fashion made to perfection. There's quite a few choices of entrées to choose from and being this is a seafood restaurant I went with the servers recommendation and chose the "Dover". As part of the experience, they fillet the fish right in front of you. A nice touch. The fish was out of this world good. Flaky white meat, with enough there to fill you up. Even with the filleting experience, they did miss a bone. But that happens. No problem. With a choice of sides I went with the steamed spinach. A rather small portion, but it was very good. For the price you would've expected more. Beautiful view of the water looking over towards Canada. If ever in town again, this is a place I would return to.
