I am not a fan of tiki drinks but as a fan of Tiki vibes I can say that Mutiny Bar in Detroit offers a captivating escape for anyone seeking a vibrant tiki experience. Stepping inside, guests are immediately enveloped by the rich Polynesian aesthetics - think bamboo accents, dim lighting, Christmas light-laden fish nets on the ceiling, wicker furniture, and an abundance of tropical decor that flawlessly transports you to an island paradise. While the extensive tiki drink menu is a highlight, the bar's appeal extends far beyond just the beverages. The bartender's craft is a show in itself, especially when they prepare the fiery drinks, which provide a spectacular visual treat and add an exciting energy to the atmosphere. I think one of the reasons I enjoyed Mutiny so much is it also gives off a very dive bar atmosphere, blending the exotic appeal of a tiki bar with the relaxed, unpretentious feel of a neighborhood spot. The drinks are fairly priced, the service is welcoming and outstanding and has been an excellent every single time I've been with my friends. I will definitely be back again.
The drinks are really good I tried a old fashioned made with wild turkey which was delicious. They have small bite options . The staff isn't the nicest but they are busy and it gets hectic so it's not a big deal.
Lauren, our bartender, was so knowledgeable and cool. The only true tiki bar left in Detroit. It's very authentic and a must visit. Bartenders in general are cool and make great drinks. They stick with the classics, but have a few fun shots in case you're feeling wild. We ordered the Tusk of Plenty and the Cobra Fang. Boozy. A tad sweet as some tiki cocktails are. This spot is one of the few bars that still has Green Chartreuse. The Slurricane has a few splashes. Street parking is plentiful. Easy to get to. Decor is great. Total time wrap. Definitely stop by Detroit's last tiki bar.
For me, you know you've walked into a great bar when you can see yourself enjoying it in different scenarios. You can easily see yourself there with a lover because its esthetic is romantic. You can see yourself hanging out there with friends because it's also festive. However, you can also see yourself sitting alone and enjoying the warm, beautiful surroundings while chatting with the gregarious bartender. I found the Mutiny Tiki Bar quite alluring. I definitely enjoyed myself and will definitely return. The drink menu is fabulous with so many cool choices to choose from. Many of the drinks are rum based. What could be more appropriate? I ordered the banana bread shot, which was super yum, and yes, it tasted just like a slice of banana bread. It was warm, aromatic, sweet, and tasty with a whipped cream topping. I also ordered the "Tusk of Plenty." The drink came in a little elephant shaped mug, with a teeny rubber duck taking a bath inside. To finish off the presentation, sprigs of rosemary adorn it and are toasted before it's placed in front of you. The drink is also festively lit with some sort of led lights. It was much more than a drink. It was like a ritual and was tremendously tasty. My drinks were served by the most wonderful, friendly bartender. I really enjoyed chatting with him. He took the time to explain some of the liquors that I was unfamiliar with, which helped me make the right choices for the evening. The drinks are moderately priced for sure. Parking isn't too plentiful on Vernor, but it's on a corner, so there's side street parking. Munity Tiki Bar is more than a neighborhood bar. It's actually a tropical escape. Go check it out, I promise that when you walk in, you'll immediately be transported to a tropical hideaway.
stopped in on a sunday for a late night cocktail and was pleasantly surprised. I asked the bartenders to make me a cocktail that wasn't on the menu and they executed it perfectly. I asked for a banana "old fashion" and it was absolutely delicious. The vibe was perfect and it was clean.
We were celebrating NYE at home this year and I wanted to treat my husband and mom to a little something special to sip on so I stopped into Mutiny to see if they still offered beverages to go. I don't know if they still regularly do it but they told me they could help me out that night, which I was very grateful for! I ended up ordering 3 drinks and they bottled them up and sent me on my way. There were supposedly 2 drinks per bottle but they didn't quuuuiiiiite get there. IDK if they add a lot more ice than we did to each glass but we all poured our beverages into standard sized tiki mugs and it shook out to be more like 1 1/3 drinks per bottle, which made the price point for each pretty high. BUT the drinks were delicious and NYE was a special occasion so it was ok. But IDK if I'd do to-go again. What I DO know is that the bar itself is awesome (very colorful and fun), the staff was super helpful and accommodating, the drinks were very good, and the price points on-site were more reasonable. So I'd definitely come back again but next time I'll stay in the bar.
We'd just finished dinner at Flowers of Vietnam down the street and wanted to continue exploring a bit before heading back downtown. I found this spot on Yelp so Nate and I walked in and managed to grab the last two-top table all the way in the back by the bathrooms. The vibe is kitschy with the decor on the ceiling. The music was SUPER loud, especially near our table. It made it a bit unfortunate to try to carry on a conversation which is not my favorite. The menu includes 12 drinks, all reasonably priced at $11-$14. I got the fortress and Nate ordered the peg-leg. The fortress has a garnish (I think it was rosemary) that they torch at the table. Our server lit it on fire and then just walked away. I don't know, I was thinking maybe he'd tell me I could blow it out, or just let it flame out? I ended up blowing it out after it burned for quite a while. I don't think it adds anything to the drink itself, it's just a bit of a show. Kind of cool but I don't need all my drinks lit on fire. The drinks were okay, but nothing super special. We finished them and then waited... and waited... and waited as our server kept going to every table near us except ours. It would've been comical except I really wanted to leave at that point. It took forever to get our check so plan extra time if you're going before a dinner reservation. I've been to plenty of tiki bars in my lifetime and this isn't really one I'd need to visit again.

No food at this establishment just a little Jimmy Buffit. Ask for Alejandro awesome waiter and good friend. Music here is from a good 70s and 80s you are going back in time at this place. For now I can pretty much figure out that this place is pretty good for a night out any night of the week. It's pretty mellow for anyone that just makes the world a better place . I can't say enough about the banana bread shot, trust me just get one. This place is worth going to and we will be back soon.

We come to Mutiny for after dinner cocktails, for birthdays, for date night, for everything! It's always tiki time! This is totally hidden on Vernor in Southwest Detroit. It's a little spot, you need to make reservations.
Mutiny has been on my places I've been meaning to visit for quite a while (covid put a pin in those plans for a while) but it DID NOT disappoint! Make a reservation in advance and best to plan ahead as weekend bookings can go fast especially with current hours closing at 11. True tiki vibes here and overall a fun vibe! My partner and I were big fans of the banana bread shots and after having a round we quickly understood while the table next to us had 3 rounds. Drinks are great, vibes impeccable, and looking forward to returning.

Absolutely outstanding small local Tiki Bar. The cocktails are a combination of adaptations of Tiki classics, as well as few of their own creations. The three that I have tried were very good. Bartenders were friendly and engaging. Amazing collection of exotic rums from around the world. The ambiance is pure classic Tiki with a few contemporary touches. Mutiny is small, but at least when I was there, on a Sunday evening, not crowded. I suspect that's not always the case. There's no kitchen, so they don't serve food. But they are fine with you bringing in your own. Parking is on-street. Great addition to my collection of tiki bars. Highly recommended! read more
Today is the last day for this place apparently which is probably not fair raiting the place so low... but drink was subpar. I got a Painkiller. Son got a Mai Tai. No where near a Trader Vic's... most patrons there were rude. read more

I loved this place....took so many people here and wanted to have a final hooray with some of the people who also appreciated this place. However, that night I recognize why stop coming. The employees. The place has the tiki vibe but the heart was ripped out when they hired a group of people who don't have that spirit of what tiki is about. To me it represents a way of life focused on kindness, unity, humility, patience, and mutual regard. It felt more exclusionary and lack of kindness almost an irritation to be in the service industry. I do hope great things for the owner in the future because he did have something special there. Wish his vision was seen by the employees. read more

This small hole-in-the-wall tiki bar has karaoke on Thursdays! It is a great spot for fruity drinks - a lot of them have a great interactions, where some are on fire. It is very small, so if you wish to sing, try getting there a bit early or plan accordingly. The atmosphere is very fun and Instagram worthy! read more

This place is fun and has a chill vibe. The drinks are fun but not strong. The ambiance is a total vibe with the DJ in the background spinning some great house and upbeat tunes along with a mixture of soul. We order a few drinks and loved all of them. A great place to hang out. read more

PACKED on a Saturday night! Very popular spot. The cocktails were cute and tasty and service was fast/decent quality. There were two bathrooms and they were sufficiently clean. We got the last table in the place around 10pm on a Saturday. They had a good DJ performing and we danced a little bit with a couple gals. Overall a fun time and we hung out for about an hour (it was post seeing a show at Willis show bar from 8-9:30). Will be back but maybe not so late next time so we can get a booth! read more

Not a large place but lights, DJ, and drinks on fire made it fun. Service was good & drinks were potent enough for me but I'm admittedly a light weight for drinking (Banana bread shot, Jenny's tea cup). Others had hornswoggle, freebooter and said they were good. The moment we walked up to the Door I knew I was gonna enjoy myself. We first walked to the bar. It's July 2nd so it's kinda full. One seat at the bar and that's it. But I notice how Inviting the bar man was and he gave us a menu right away. We got a booth soon after that. Drinks came in a timely fashion and let me just say, the music was very viby I loved it! Like want to go back tonight almost. It's my birthday btw! Lol. Anyway I had 3 drinks on the menu and my partner had 2 as well!!!!! read more

Our first night in Detroit of course has to include a tiki bar! And boy did we find a good one! Right away, we were amazed by the ambiance and the bartender was so welcoming! Drinks had: planet of the apes, piña colada, puka puka, and peg leg parlay. The highlight of the night was the banana bread shot! Such a great time. read more
My friends and I came here after eating. We came here at night. I like the decor. The umbrellas and lights are cute. We sat at a table in the back of the bar. The service and drinks were good. The only issue I had was the ladies room. The cold water did not work so I had quickly was my hands with hot water. read more
This place is cozy and intimate. They do accept reservations. We sat at the bar. We got there right at opening. Initial concern that we got timing wrong and the bartender came out and opened the gate. Service was prompt and friendly. Drinks were unique and different from other spots. The Corsair was earthy and had ingredients I haven't had before. The banana bread shot was my favorite! The peg leg was pretty strong. This is a fun place for a group! read more
I love the vibes in this place, decor and staff: super fun place to hang out on a Friday night! This entire block on Vernor is the place to be now and that makes me so happy! Mutiny opens at 5 and 4 of us were starting to amass at 4:45, - ready to kick off the weekend with drinks on I'm recommending everyone start with the banana bread shots- you'll want to end the night with them too. Best on the menu and the menu has lots to choose from Next, go with Painkiller because you're coming off a little sweet with the shots... And then finish with something from the smoky, earthy or less sweet: Pegleg, Corsair or island hopper all sold choices The fun here is the show- you're coming for the show, the "tiki"- so the drink taste/quality is not SugarHouse- don't get confused- but this place is FUN and different- Detroit has few, if any, true tiki bars- and they have the right staff for the mood- sit at the bar for your close-up This is my new regular Friday night kick off spot! read more

I love a good cocktail bar, and this is a *great* cocktail bar! The decor is purposely kitschy, and their menu matches the ambiance. The bartenders are helpful and talented, and most importantly, the drinks are delicious. My wife and I split the Privateer (refreshing and sweet, tequila), Landlubber (crisp, gin), Hornswoggle (refreshing, rum), and Crow's Nest (sweet and creamy, rum). No complaints about any of them. All their drinks are served in fun glasses, and they're stronger than they seem, so be careful! read more
Great little find in the Detroit area. Who doesn't love a tiki warm in the heart of winter?! Perks include free parking AND you can bring in food. Only fun and yummy drinks here, but lots of options including pizza next door. I love the chill vibe. Lots of seating available at the bar and throughout the facility. We opted for bar seating so we could enjoy all the fire side action. There is a decent selection of tiki themed drinks with lots of tiki themed glasses to enjoy them in. We enjoyed the painkiller, the scorpion bowl, and the banana bread shots to name a few. The painkiller and the banana bread shots were a couple of my favorites! The scorpion bowl was definitely fun! This bar isn't too loud so you can still hear people talking. Not fancy, just low key and peeps trying to have a good time! read more

Pretty cool tiki vibes, they have every corner of the place covered in decorations. All of the cups they serve their specialty drinks in are ceramic decorative glasses. I tried three different drinks there and they were all wayyyyy too sweet. I ended up ordering a vodka water instead. Service was extremely slow behind the bar. I wasn't able to get any service until 25 minutes after being there even though the place was not that busy. They have a juke box which is fun for guests to be able to choose their own music, but it throws the tiki experience off once Cardi B starts playing. read more

Is this place just for drinks or do they offer a food menu?
Drinks only but they welcome food from outside. I have seen people bring in food from downtown here. Yes, there is a pizza place next door.
Do they take reservations?
No. Just walk in and try to grab a seat or section that's available. Seats fill quickly when busy.
