West Fort St. Bar (WFSB) certainly falls into that category. It has all the trappings of an exemplary dive bar: exclusively country music on the jukebox, 30 year old video poker machines, dish soap instead of hand soap in the bathrooms, and a POW*MIA flag on the wall - but something about WFSB is extra special. It's the stuffed gorilla propped in a corner, the tiny purple dildo sitting on a broken artificial aquarium behind the bar, and the Ms. Wonderful doll still in the box (for collector value) perched on a blank television. There's a reason that no one has Yelped about this place before. The company is what truly makes the experience worthwhile. The bartenders are two women in their 70s (maybe 80s) with loose dentures, thick southern twangs, and tacky holiday sweaters. Be forewarned that cigarette smoking is most definitely still allowed and the bartenders lead by example. Ancient barflies continue the same "Negro problem" discussion they've been having for the last fifty years. Detroit may be 80% black, but it's unlikely any of that majority has ever stepped foot inside WFSB. There are no droughts, but ice cold 12 oz. cans of Labatt Blue Light are served from a side-by-side refrigerator like the one in your home kitchen. I was charged for the first one, but the second can was automatically handed to me "on the boss." Don't be fooled by the clinking martini glasses silhouette art above a barred window, there are no martini glasses here. WFSB sits across from the Detroit Produce Terminal in a little cement block addition with applied faux stone veneer tacked onto the front of a house. It neighbors a burnt out, abandoned old commercial building with "Keep Out" scrawled across the boarded up door. Parking is on the street. You may choose to park as the regulars do with one side of your woody station wagon up on the sidewalk. Unfortunately "& Grill" has been blocked out on the sign above the entrance, so we are no longer able to sample the tasty delights WFSB no doubt once had to offer. However, the famished will notice a handwritten menu stuck to a toy motorcycle offering "Vienna sausage, peanuts, popcorn, Rolaids, Alka-Seltzer. $1 each." It's the kind of hangout where you don't feel embarrassed paying the tab with a stack of quarters, and you do feel an overwhelming sense of relief upon finding your vehicle unmolested after the visit. Whether you want to quietly sip vintage peach schnapps or luxuriate in the privacy of the empty basement (VIP lounge?) and play pool, WFSB is the right place for you. Need I mention credit cards are not accepted?
