***Note: This review pertains to a "dinner" experience.*** I should start off by saying that if you go in expecting a "usual" restaurant experience, this restaurant might seem odd and/or slow; but if you have the patience and a desire for a good meal in a classy setting, you'll be pleased. The restaurant itself is not exactly as busy as other restaurants, therefore Robert, the owner, provides your dining party (or just you if that's how you roll) all of the services (from answering phones for reservations, to seating you, prepping & cooking the meal, etc). Wednesday/Friday/Saturday dinner requires a reservation; when you call to reserve you'll likely be asked what you will be ordering...mostly because the restaurant isn't as busy as other places and Robert prepares each meal fresh from scratch once the reservation is made. A "full" fondue dining experience requires about a day's notice/reservation ahead. The Saturday night dinner we experienced was a 3-course meal (with dessert optional). The first part was a fresh salad w/delicious house dressing that is strongly recommended. The second course was a bowl of Boston Clam Chowder & another bowl of Chipotle Black Bean soup accompanied w/sides of bread; all of which was exquisite! Then came the main course; I ordered the Pan Seared Scallops and my wife had the Pan Seared Pork Loin. The dishes come with a side of steamed vegetables and potatoes. Both dishes were delicious but my biggest critique is that I wish they came in bigger servings (4 scallops for me, 4 pieces of pork for the wife). Each 3-course meal (not counting dessert) was roughly $32.50. We opted for dessert and selected the Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake & Vanilla Bean Cheesecake with coffee to drink. Everything was delicious. As previously stated, this restaurant is a very classy & relaxing dining experience. Did we find the owner/waiter/cook (Robert) "obnoxious/annoying" as other reviewer(s) did? No, not really. After each course he would simply ask how everything was, which of the soups we preferred, etc, as he took the empty plates away. He genuinely seemed interested in knowing what we thought of each dish for his own improvement/edification. He didn't "push" us to dessert...he simply gave us his recommended picks & asked us if we still had room left for it. All in all, the lunch experience (which we've yet to have) is likely a more casual dining experience...with the dinner experience being something more attune for a fancy date or business meeting, etc...but still deliciously recommended! What an experience that was! Visiting from california , i needed a break from the city life and was recommended by family to come here, I was the only customer that day, for a second i thought it was closed but I was approached by the owner and set me down. Now the scenery was great for my eyes and the music playing (jazz) just added to it. I had the lobster bistro which was amazing .Do note he does give u samples of each soup so you know what you are ordering which I appreciate . I ordered a sandwich (forgot the name of it but comes with three types of meat i believe) wasn't able to finish it but still amazing and it came with a side of salad. Some advice when getting the salad though ask for his homemade dressing. He suggested it and I try it and WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! But the best part of this whole experience was his character, such a nice, respectful person not sure why people kept saying he is pushy and rude in the reviews , but anyways we spent almost 2 hours just talking about numerous topics. In short, decent service and food, awful, obnoxious owner. I will never go back. The owner came by or table to check on us. He picked lint from our young female servers pants and critiqued her dessert presentation in front of us. Then he tried to push us into getting dessert. The restaurant reminds me of that Seinfeld where Elaine gets upset because the cafe owner hires only young attractive women. Only in this case, I'm pretty sure these girls aren't his daughters. Lunch at La Sous Terre is very good, but make sure that you have the time to spare. You don't walk in and order a sandwich and leave in less than an hour. They make everything fresh when you order it and usually only have one or two people in the kitchen. The restaurant is not accessible; you have to walk down stairs to get to it. The sandwiches are themed after movies- my favorite is the Big Lebowski. The food is very fresh and thoughtfully prepared. A sandwich, side (salad or chips) and a drink will run you about $10-12 per person, but it's worth it. The soups are not freshly made- they are gourmet packaged soups- but good nonetheless. A little hidden gem in Warrensburg. We are from a larger city and have been looking for a place with food made with great ingredients and attention to detail. This is the place. The owner/chef really love food and knows his stuff. The decor and environment feels a little run down, but the food is great. Soups are his specialty and I have yet experienced one that wasn't wonderful. Wish he had an updated place so more people would visit because this is a treat. read more

Food - meh. Service - s l o w w w w. Where to start? Lunch on a Friday at noon - 4 tables seated. 6 people on our party. 1 waitress who clearly didn't know the menu or how to serve. The owner hovered over us. Drinks went empty for a very long time. I had the "Dr.Strangelove" sandwich (essentially a lukewarm version of a Reuben). School cafeteria quality. A companion had a tuna salad sandwich that looked like puréed grey sludge (it oozed out of the sides of the bread while I watched). She ate two bites and gave up. The "Gouda Soup" was ... Surprise! Tomato bisque. Delivery of the food came in 9 waves. 2 bowls of lobster bisque. Then 1 sandwich and a salad. Then another sandwich and a bowl of Gouda soup. Went here for a romantic evening with my wife, if you really want a secluded romantic dinner this place is it. The meal was expensive but I believe you're paying for the ambiance. The cheese was fantastic 5 stars for the appiteazer for sure!!! Main course is meant to be split and was a little large for the two of us... it consisted of a pot of lightly flavored beef broth pork beef chicken and shrimp... and veggies simply but you boil you food and eat it.. it is fairly bland if you are not used to it..... if you have had shobu shobu in Japan that is exactly what this is. Great place for fondue . You have to make reservations for the fondue but they have lot of varieties in fondue and the guy is very friendly . If you do not know about fondue don't be mad if it takes longer , it is not fast food and supposed to take hours to eat and socialize. read more

Went in with spouse and 3 children. Kids and wife had sandwiches with chips. I had the house salad with chicken. Kids loved the sandwiches and asked mom why she couldn't make it like that. Prior to moving here, I visited family for several weeks at a time at various times of the year. My son and I, sometimes joined by my daughter-in-law, have eaten at La Sous Terre often. They have changed a bit from their earlier days in that now the meal is ordered at the tables instead of the counter. The counter area used to get very crowded and confusing so that is a welcome change. We eat there because the food is fresh and tasty. At times the service is very slow or haphazard. As a previous reviewer mentioned, that is due to being prepared by the one or two who happen to be there in the small kitchen area. The place is a bit disorganized feeling at times. Other times, the wait staff and/or the owner are very attentive. I've had issues with the wine service too, but the owner tries to make amends if you bring it to his attention. On one occasion it was not brought to the table until the meal was just about done. I told the owner that it tasted great but I no longer had time to enjoy it. He willingly did not charge for it, plus he brought us a complimentary dessert item as compensation. On other occasions I questioned him about the available wines, not knowing which to select. He generously poured rather large tasting samples so I could decide. I have the feeling he is overwhelmed at times but does his best to make things right. He is also very well versed on all varieties of wine. He personally scouts them out from all over Missouri, surrounding areas, and into California. He can talk wine. One note about the breads: What is listed on the menu is not always what is delivered. That may happen when their supply runs out. If you specifically want just one particular type of bread you need to bring it up while placing the order. You will then get what you want, or at least have the ability to approve a substitute. The breads, like everything else there, are of good quality. The salads are worth having because they are substantial and not generic; they contain good stuff, like pricey chilled lettuce, perfectly ripened tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers, and more. The dressings are all good, and yes, you can ask for the oil and vinegar on the side. Despite any drawbacks, this is the only place in Warrensburg that delivers such unique and tasty food. Just know that you need to be proactive about getting what you want at times. They do not seem to mind if you track them down in the kitchen or out front while they are conversing with customers. Some of you may not feel comfortable with having to do that, but really, the owner does not mind at all. He will thank you and probably will comp you something to make up for the inconvenience. This is such an authentic, charming little restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, and the service is always very quick from super friendly staff. The food is to die for, and you can tell it's high quality and made by someone with a passion for delicious food. I've only been here for lunch, but I hope to reserve a fondue dinner here soon. I had lunch here today while visiting a friend in Warrensburg, where I once lived, some dozen years ago now. You go down some steps from the sidewalk into a basement space that's been tastefully redone to make a comfortable and pleasant little restaurant, though with a limited amount of natural lighting. You order your sandwich at the counter, and it's brought to you at your table. My companion and I each had tasty sandwiches. I was surprised to find that mine had a wheat bagel for bread, since all I recalled seeing on the menu was that it was on wheat. Maybe I missed something. Are all the sandwiches on bagels? My companions was on a bagel likewise, and she thinks that they are all bagel sandwiches there. Anyway, it was good. The salad was tasty. When I asked for plain olive oil instead of a dressing, they had no problem with this, and gave me some olive oil on the side. I think it's a good sign when I restaurant can deliver a plain ingredient--if they can't, they're probably not making stuff from scratch. I went there with my wife, we got a lunch combo which consist of half a sandwich, chips or salad and a bowl of soup-which from what I understand are his specialty-, everything was excellent for a very decent price ( 8,50ish ) ! The owner is very friendly and gave us samples of the soups he was serving this day so we can decide which one we wanted. The sandwich are very good and you can taste that good ingredients are used ( and well used ). I am french myself and even if the menu is not as french as you could except it to be as long as everything is tasty it is not a problem at all ! You can get information from them about Fondue dinner ( if you never had one, just run for it it's delicious ) ! There is no wine menu because the owner wants the customer to enjoy a good combination wine/food and will work with you to understand what kind of wine you would appreciate the most with your meal ( and trust me he has some good stuff in his cave ).
