Wow. I really cannot say enough good stuff about Alex and La Remise. My husband and I flew into Amsterdam about two weeks ago to start a grand European tour (read: two Americans, two bags, five cities) and La Remise was our first stop. We landed early in the morning and Alex allowed us to drop our bags. He was incredibly friendly and didn't mind our disorientation (we didn't sleep on our overnight flight) and answered our initial bouts of questions. Our entire stay was a complete joy.
La Remise is small and on a residential street. I find this much more appealing than staying at a place like we did in Paris, Barcelona and our current hotel in Madrid: being right in the center of the city can make for a difficult night's sleep. La Remise is tucked away but very close to the tram and in walking distance to many of the places you'll want to check out including the flower market, Mellow Yellow (Amsterdam's oldest coffeeshop), and many historical landmarks and museums.
Very chic, La Remise has three rooms and a top floor breakfast area. Alex provides an exceptional breakfast each day with stroopwaffels, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed oj, cereal, yogurt, cheese, bread, meats... he also cooks up eggs if you wish (everything was so good we didn't need the eggs!). The rooms are well-appointed and the bathrooms are fantastic. Guests are quiet and friendly.
One of the best parts of staying here was the conversation provided by Alex during breakfast - he was always interested in chatting and we learned a great deal about him -- he has a very interesting history.
If you're planning on heading to Amsterdam I highly recommend a stay here - I know we'll never stay anywhere else. read more
