Coco Mama Hostel - 6 bed dorm in 2013

Coco Mama Hostel

Cocomama played a key part in the great memories I have from Amsterdam. It's a small, intimate…read morehostel, where you can chat with the super friendly staff or the equally friendly guests. Events are organised daily (from family dinner to sex show night), so even you shy people can mingle. The common area is cozy like someone's living room, and the kitchen is fully equipped (free pasta and rice is provided!) The dorms are cozy, clean, with ensuite bathroom and a big locker per bed where you can fit in your suitcase (bring your own padlock or rent it). Beds are super comfy and each one has a mini locker by their side. And even though there's a tram right out of the door, don't worry about transportation: you can rent an ad-free bike for just 5 euros a day, so you can look like a true Amsterdamer. And let's face it, there's no better way to navigate the city than on your own bike.

I've been to Amsterdam many times this year and each time I come here, I try to stay at a different…read morelocation just to understand the city better. On this visit, I chose Cocomama for part of the trip. Cocomama is close to Fredericksplein, which is the main artery for some hip places you'll want to go. It is near the city centre, but not too close, otherwise it gets tacky. The ladies at the front desk are friendly and helpful. They give you a full tour of the hostel, which was once a brothel. Just my luck... In the basement, there is a nice lounge area with shared kitchen and dining space. Lots of lovely couches to fall asleep on and a beautiful cat to keep you company. There is also a garden and you can go out there from 9AM - 9PM, only cigarette smoking allowed. Tons of books, movies to keep you entertained. You can also play old-school Nintendo. Wow brings back memories. They will also do your laundry for €6. If you don't have a tablet or computer, they can loan you one. Good wifi throughout the hostel. If you arrive before check-in time, you can leave your bag and check-in later, the front desk open 9AM - 9PM. I stayed in a 4 bed coed room aptly named, "The Brothel Room." Beds are comfy and also there are lockers in the room if you need to lock up something. The bathroom is in the room, so not as big of a hassle to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My only gripe is that they don't serve breakfast. It is probably one of the only places I've stayed at in Amsterdam that doesn't have breakfast. Bummer...

There was air conditioning, lockers and the bedding was clean and comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was great, but as a word of warning, it is basically a glass box, so you and your room mate will need to very comfortable with nudity and the sounds of each other's bathroom business... Free WiFi in the common area, and if I opened the window in my room I could even get one bar of service when I was upstairs. Win. The food and drinks are cheap and cheerful, and the staff are very helpful with directions etc. Everything is closeby, bike rental, cafes, 'coffeshop', sex shop, tattoo shops and pubs in the same street. And the Red Light District is about 15 minutes walk, on the other side of Dam Square.

Hated it. If you have any self respect at all, book…read moresomewhere else. The shared dorms are genuinely like a prison - metal bunk beds with metal cubbies underneath, no privacy at all, and at night you can hear EVERYTHING. Every little movement or breath from yourself and your roommates (not to mention the hallway and lobby, due to a complete lack of insulation) is amplified and echoes because everything in this room is metal, cold and hard. The vibes in the room are terrible and that alone makes me want to never return, but the worst part was the shower. The faucet in the shower is a button that, when pressed, sprays water at maximum pressure (seriously extreme, hard water pressure) for about 30 seconds and then shuts off. If you enjoy a relaxing shower like I do, avoid this hostel. If you enjoy the feeling of being blasted with water so hard that it stuns you a bit and hurts, then I supposed you'd love it. The degree to which this hostel sucked was, in a word, inexcusable. I would not stay here again if they paid me.

This is one of those hostels that looks great on paper -- stylish, lively, and set inside a former…read morezoological university building -- but the experience really depends on how much chaos you're willing to tolerate. The rooms are modern enough, but they're busy, and the common spaces can feel loud, crowded, and a bit cramped during peak hours. It's the kind of social energy some travelers love... and others need a break from. Fortunately, Generator has one of the best built‑in escape valves of any hostel in the city: Oosterpark. Step outside and you're instantly in a wide, green, quiet space where you can decompress, read, walk, or simply enjoy a breather from the dorm‑room dynamics. Having a full park as your "quiet lounge" is a huge perk, and honestly one of the best parts of staying here. Inside, the hostel delivers what it promises -- a trendy vibe, a young crowd, and plenty of activity -- but it's not the place for anyone seeking calm or space to spread out. If you're looking for a social stay with an easy nature retreat right outside the door, Generator fits the bill. If you want something more relaxed, you may want to explore other hostels or more private stays.

Then they rented me a bike with a damaged chain. They refused to refund me or give me a new bike saying "it apperas to be fine". The staff will always smile while never actually being helpful. They just push you towards the option that makes them more money. Not guest friendly unless you want to be upcharged every second.

The staff were incredibly friendly but I can't say that I was impressed beyond that. The location…read morewas good, in the centre of the Jordaan area, but the inside wasn't as convenient. There isn't much of a main area unless you smoke and want to use their reserved smoking room. As for storage for your bags before/after checking in, there are two cubbie holes near the front desk that are wide open and far from secure. As for the rooms, although my bed was very comfortable, there was only one toilet and one shower for each floor that was to be split between about 25 people. They did not supply any towels, breakfast, or even drinking water (that wasn't Bottled and costed €1). Not highly recommended, however if you have money and are just looking for a roof over your head it will give you that.

Best location (closest to all things touristy - I.e. Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank…read moreHouse, Heineken Experience), so that's 5 stars. And here we go... Minus one star for its steep ass stairway as their main entrance. You'll never find this place at night, since the sign is almost invisible and there's only a small piece of paper with the red letters painted "Hostel" posted at the top of the door. You have to ring the doorbell to be let in, then you climb up those narrow stairs to get to the main "lobby" to check in. There's a smoke room open 24 hours on the same floor (when you know you're in Amsterdam ). Minus another one for the small ass rooms with miniature bunk beds. Everything feels so squished (barely any walking room), lockers are run down, and the bed linen doesn't appear to be the cleanest. The beds were so close that I could literally turn my head and see a random face less than 6 inches away... No Bueno. Sorry, going to have to take one last star for the awkward way the showers are designed. You'll get absolutely no privacy the moment you decide you want a nice hot shower and call it a day. You scan your key, open the door, and there's a shower divided by a sliding glass (see through) door, without another door to separate that from the room with bunk beds... meaning anyone can walk in any time on you. I never felt so vulnerable in my life. ***** No free breakfast included. Free wifi. Really clean showers (despite the lack of privacy). Body wash/shampoo included. The toilets are in separate rooms outside the main rooms. In a gist, you get what you paid for. I'm not picky so I had no regrets. The proximity to everything made up for the crappy living accommodations.

Be warned that the cheap weekday prices will balloon into costs of €100+ for a bed in a 16 person dorm. We found the front desk and management to be pretty unhelpful, unfriendly, and extremely stingy. On our last night, we had a conversation with a friendly German man whose confirmed private room had been given away before he arrived, stranding him. There are no lockers, they will charge you to look after your bag, the €6 charge for a towel encourages you to improvise, and the free breakfast consists of bread and spread. When you get to your room, their will probably be a group of men smoking and drinking on the floor. They will probably return in the middle of the night to enjoy some boisterous rough-housing and shouting. The bathrooms are really bad. There is often no toilet paper or soap, and it's hard to tell where the toilet ends and the shower begins. It's probably a good way to pick up a preventable disease. The beds could be worse, but you will have someone's feet directly in your face. There's a lot of noise from the streets/nightclubs if that bothers you. The wifi was pretty good.
