This is definitely a five star hostel. We paid just under 200 bucks for a private room. (It's kind of expensive) That is the price per a night. Pros: -It's fully air conditioned. -wifi is fast - a lot of place to lounge - a private Mac computer in the first floor lounge area - bike rentals - when you walk out of the back door you are literally standing in a beautiful park. - modern decor Cons (really only one con): -the hostel's doors are open 24/7. You don't even need a key to enter the hostel. That's kind of unsafe in my opinion. Overall, this is more like a hotel than a hostel. It's clean and inviting. I highly recommend it for anyone staying in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

When your first stay at Generator is good, you have to try it again. So that's what I did. Except, this time, I brought a friend with me. As a part of a 3-week backpacking trip, we started our trip in Amsterdam and Generator was our hostel to be. Although this hostel is a bit out of city center, it is really close stops of several tramlines so getting to the city center is not difficult. It is located next to a beautiful park area and there are a handful of restaurants within a 10 minute walk. The interior of the hostel was modern, warm, and charming.. They have a good café which was our place to be for morning coffee or breakfast. We reserved beds in a room of 4 and our stay was comfortable. We were not bothered by any noise from outside the room. Our room was clean and roommates were friendly. The storage boxed under the bed were life savers. It was nice to pack things away and not worry about taking up too much space in our small room. Each bed had its own wall outlet and light, making it easy to charge your phone or read something in the middle of the night. At the hostel, there is a bar/club where you can get drinks and listen to some music.Since it is a bit further out of the center, if you wanted to hang out and meet people, you could easily do that at this hostel. Lots of people were socializing. Overall, this was a great start to our trip and we had a comfortable stay!

Private room bathroom; small but functional.

Not really walkable to the main canal zone, but an easy tram ride (and right next to Oosterpark, which is beautiful). Generator is a high-end hostel, which is to say that it is new, with a hip design and layout, and has plenty of private rooms if you're willing to pay a little more. Our private room looked out over Oosterpark, and had huge floor to ceiling windows that made it feel a lot bigger than it was. The room itself was small, but clean and functional, and the hostel has a ton of great common areas (both loud and quiet) to hang out in if you need a break from walking around the city. If the word "hostel" turns you off because you're thinking about sketchy backpacker losing, this isn't it, this is much closer to a hip hotel than anything else.

You should wear either closed toed shoes or higher heels because everything is glass so flat sandals is a little dangerous. One girl in our group almost didn't get let in but because we had a table, they allowed it. Upstairs gives that Asian decor with lots of red lights. There's a light up dance floor in the center and they're playing hip/hop and r&b. The tables are small circular lounge ones and there. They do have some small sparklers for the bottles to arrive. Downstairs, our table was on the front right right next to the DJ booth and the speakers which was a lot, but they gave us ear plugs. Love the light up ceiling below and the music is more EDM. We were there during 'Please Don't Tell Night' which I'm not sure what that theme means but there was an Emcee that acted like DJ Khaled and talked wayyy too much. Otherwise the music was pretty solid. We ended up staying til close and had a good time!

Theres not much table space for bottle service but nice place to hit the dance floor or stand at the bar and listen to music. The ceiling has a cool light display too. Didnt have much of a problem with the bouncer except that he made me throw out the snack in my purse.

Most of the establishments looked pretty quiet and dead except for Smokey and the club next door. Since we weren't in the mood for clubbing, we decided to go to Smokey. The moment we walked in, I noticed that it totally lived up to its namesake and was totally... smokey. Too smokey. It almost seemed like there was a fire going on inside. The place was pretty packed and busy, but we managed to snag a little bar table by the door. It was next to the vending machine for ciggies and under a large clock, so I could keep tabs on exactly what time it was. :) I sat on a high bar stool by the wall, while my bf sat with his back towards the room. It wasn't the best position for him to be in, as people kept bumping into him as they were walking by. He got a beer, and I ordered a mint tea because I didn't feel like drinking any more alcohol. I loved how the mint tea came with tons of fresh mint leaves. Totally awesome. They also gave me a Pickwick English tea bag with it, which I didn't bother to put in, as I didn't want any caffeine so late at night. We left after only one drink, as we were tired and the place was too smokey to hang out for long.

I was an OBSERVER, not a participant…read more I've actually put off writing alot of my Amsterdam reviews b/c I don't want my "good girl" image to be tarnished (Hi Mom!). Let's just say I observed certain recreational activities in Amsterdam that I think the world should know about. Amsterdam is brand spankin' new to Yelp, after all. So they need all the reviews they can get. Smokey's is smack in the middle of Rembrandt Square, which is a haven for tourists. The inside resembles an above ground neon-lit cave. Pool tables in the back. Music videos playing on the flat screens. Every time I hear Kid Cudi's "Memories", I think of this place. Everyone stopped what they were doing to sing along :) Tables are communal. Most patrons are college-aged. They have a zig zag vending machine and they sell pre-rolled or bagged product. According to my traveling companion, their merchandise was much more pricey than at neighboring coffee shops (like Rokerij, which is awesome), but since Smokey's is a better hangout spot in a more central location - you pay a bit more. The quality is mediocre, though. I enjoyed a 4 euro pineapple strawberry smoothie at the bar. They don't serve alcohol here though, only smoothies, which I found to be quite common in the coffee shops of Amsterdam. The folks behind the counter were pretty nice folks, too. Overall, I would recommend Smokey's for the younger crowd.

Escape - The policy is clear, indoor smoking rooms have been banned since 2008, and neither this policy nor the law were enforced.

It was shocking that a venue with a strict non-smoking policy still permits smoking and vaping inside on the main stage and the dance floor. Last night, people were smoking all over and absolutely nothing was being done about it. I saw at least 10 examples, at least half of which were in the VIP area next to the main stage, in plain sight of everyone. Having smoke blown in my face multiple times really detracted from my experience, and smoking indoors has also been illegal in NL since 2008. 2. The placement of the gogo dancers was inconvenient. The dancers were on top of the DJ booth, obscuring the clear view of the DJ for at least 10-20% of people. In Vegas, they stand near the DJ Booth or around the edge of the dance floor or by the VIP area, which still allows club goers to see the DJ. Escape should also place its dancers in a place where they do not obscure the DJ. 3. That there were only female gogo dancers made me feel very uncomfortable, and like the club was geared more for the traditional heterosexual male experience than for the female/gay male experience. I appreciate and respect the gogo art form and suggest that if Escape has gogo dancers as a part of the entertainment, that there should be female AND male dancers (and nonbinary, if available, for inclusivity). The two stars are (1) for the great screens, sound, lighting, and effects systems with talented tech people, and (2) for the friendly and skilled bartenders
